Westsailor 10 Posted April 22, 2011 I'm a big fan of hi-fi simulations. So far, after a few hours with the demo I think I'm gonna like this. Aside from figuring out which version to by (arma 2? OA? CO? Reinforcements?) I have a couple observations & questions. 1. Maybe it's just the demo but Boot Camp could stand some expansion. There is no in-game tutorial as to how to issue commands your squad. So far, in the one demo campaign I've been getting my a$$ handed to me :) because, for example, I haven't figured out how to deploy my squad and/or 'fumbling' around trying to figure out how to get the medic to heal me. I have found the wiki manual and some youtube tutorials but it's one thing to read/watch a tutorial and another to remember how to do it in the game. 2. Not quite sure how to adjust my mouse sensitivity. I've tweeked the Options/controls/mouse over & over but I just can't get it right. I could beat the timed boot camp exercise easily if I just weren't 'over-controlling' my view (i.e. I just want to turn left 90 deg and move fwd but the slightest movement turns me way too much.). 3. My main interest is ultimately multiplayer. There are no demo multiplayer servers to speak of, at least that I could find. It would be nice if BI would set up an ongoing server populated with AI opponents such that I could test my connex, learn controls, etc. etc. Otherwise, so far so good. I think I'm gonna like this game.
EDcase 87 Posted April 22, 2011 (edited) Hi and welcome, I'd suggest getting Arma2 and Reinforcements which = Combined Arms + British Forces(BAF) + Mercenaries (PMC). (If you get OA instead of Reinforcements you will have extra missions but you'll have to get BAF and PMC separately online) That will give you access to the most servers. (Note that some servers use mods which are free but must be installed to join) 1) Don't be discouraged. It takes a while to get comfortable with controls and methods for commanding AI. Take it slow. Customize controls to your liking which also makes sure you are aware of them all. There are a few vids on YouTube how to command AI. (HINT: when wounded press 5,4 (states that you are wounded so AI are aware) Then select the medic with his F number and press 6,1 (that will tell him to heal whoever is wounded tho you might not be first in the queue) 2) If the in game sensitivity doesn't go low enough then you'll have to adjust in windows mouse settings or get a higher DPi mouse ;) 3) BIS just make the game. There are quite a few servers worldwide... Or use the editor. Its very easy to make a quick mission. (look for vids on Youtube) You WILL get killed ALOT in the beginning until you learn to spot the enemy and get a feel for how the AI react. Thats what makes it more than just a kiddie shooter and keeps us coming back for more ;) Edited April 22, 2011 by EDcase
[frl]myke 15 Posted April 22, 2011 Quote I'd suggest getting Arma2 and Reinforcements which = Combined Arms + British Forces(BAF) + Mercenaries (PMC). (If you get OA instead of Reinforcements you will have extra missions but you'll have to get BAF and PMC separately online) Although i would second that advice, the last sentence is not true. You will have BAF and PMC lite which enables you to play online with people that bought those DLC's (or the reinforcement pack for that matter). All required units, vehicles, weapons and islands are present but in a lower quality (texture and sound). One can decide later if this is enough or want to directly buy the Reinforcements pack or upgrade later. That said, to play online one would need ArmA 2 and Operation Arrowhead (which is then called Combined Operations), the rest is optional.
Westsailor 10 Posted April 22, 2011 So you would suggest I buy ArmA 2 and Reinforcements (or ArmA 2 and Operation Arrowhead) separately? Even though both Operation Arrowhead and Reinforcements are considered standalone expansions (e.g. not needing ArmA 2 to play)? From what I have read it does seem there are some that prefer the original ArmA 2 to the 'New & Improved' Arma 2 that you would be getting in the standalone expansion(s). Tonci87 163 Posted April 22, 2011 My advice: Ge your hands on Arma 2 Combined Operations. If this is not possible then go for Arma2+ OA. You will have BAF and PMC lite. If you really want to play extensively with those 2, then consider buying them via Sprocket. If you buy Arma 2 and reinforcements you won´t get the OA Single Player Stuff (which is actually quite fun). I can´t think of anybody that prefers plain old Arma 2. OA is much more polished with the latest patches than Arma

Combined Ops is the way to go definately, and I would suggest either both DLCs or the Reinforcements package (not both as you'll be doubling up). The benefit of Combined Ops is maps & units from both games will be available.

I thought CO was just ArmA 2 & OA. I figured CO to be a kind of 'package deal' for both games for those that don't already have Arma 2. In other words, if I already had Arma 2 it wouldn't make sense to buy CO ($44)... I could just buy OA ($33). Or is Arma 2 'New & Improved' (ala OA) as well in CO? Sorry that I'm having a hard time 'getting it'. I guess it doesn't really matter since the overall consensus is for me to just start with CO anyway. This is a helluva game. I'm still floundering around with the demo trying to figure out how to command my squad. The wiki, etc. is helping and I'm slowly getting there but the light bulb hasn't gone off yet. Combined Operations = ArmA2 plus Operation Arrowhead Expansion. It also includes 'Lite' version of the BAF and PMC DLC releases (reduced graphics and audio effects). If you have ArmA2 already, then purchase only Operation Arrowhead. CO / OA contains a pretty well made tutorial/training which explains almost everything. The rest comes with practice and the help of the community. :) As you already noticed, this game has a pretty steep learning curve with a lot of keys to remember compared to the usual shooter games out there. As said before, you will die a lot in the first weeks and maybe months.
