What's the point of being able to run forever?

Recommended Posts

On a combat zone no one is running around....

And if you do so in ARMA, you'll get shoted in a jiffy.

So, the discussion of the infinite stamina is quite pointless, because even though you are able to run forever, there's no advantage in doing that.

I agree with this. Plus being able to run forever in other situations (not in immediate danger) helps in cases when a mission designer doesn't include appropriate transportation which happens fairly frequently.

Mind that although realistic, a true walking speed (of about 5km/h) is painfully slow when seen through a computer screen... the screen tunnels down your vision, which makes things seem even more slow than they already are.

Doesn't a smaller field of view increase the feeling of speed, as the movement of objects relative to the edges of the screen is faster? I know have a camera placed lower to the grounds makes everything seem fast.

From my experience with racing games, wider FOV increases the feeling of speed. Driving an F1 car with very narrow FOV, I lose all sense of speed. Did a quick search on youtube and found this:

Try covering the two screens on the sides with your hands and then after watching for some time remove them. The car appears to go a lot faster with a wide FOV.

I miss the jog that was in Arma 1. In Arma 2 the normal run animation is the same as Arma 1's sprint. A1's jog didn't lower your stamina but was still adequately fast.

A better question is, why are you playing missions which require you to travel vast distances on foot? That seems remarkably unFun. Use vehicles or play smaller scale missions where spending hours walking over terrain isn't the goal of the mission. :)

That makes perfect sense :cool::rolleyes:

Ever pressed eject by accident when being air transported from A to B? :(

Plus sometimes a mission may only include a very limited set of vehicles that may all get damaged, forcing the player to walk.

@Celery: What was the difference (in terms of look)? And did it also support multiple speeds, like the current sprint mode (in which both speeds differ from the jog speed)?

The A1 jog is more relaxed, I'm sure you can see it in some video. The sprint is around the speed of A2's normal run.

I find I have to rest if running long distances often so I can be sure my crosshair does'nt go crazy if I run into enemies unexpectedly!

If you already expect to run into them unexpectedly - why run in the first place? ;)

@Celery: Roger, can't remember how it was.

Some people recognize Arma 2 is still a game at it's heart. ;)

Unless you want to get pwned in PvP...
