imagine a scenario where a country tries to get back at the united states and submits a virus that kills off the ability of males to give birth to women. the remaining women are dwindling. panic strikes all throughout the world and women are kept inside as rapes become more frequent. in a last effort attempt to quell things the remaining worlds women are brought in to be cloned. the foreign military kills some of them in terrorist attacks on cloning labs. what would be your doomsday scenario if these events took place? does this sound like a credible movie or even ofp scenario? Nothing personal, just imagine the consequences of such that have never been explored. have you ever crossed this idea?

There was a short story from the book The Brains of Rats by a surgeon called Michael Blumlein. IIRC, the book was filled with stories exploring the concepts of identity, genetic destiny, and gender. One was about a man who was involved in a viral research team and had developed a virus that could either change all men to women or all women to men. He went around interviewing people of each sex asking them what the best thing about being a man or a woman was.

There was also a story about the experience of an inmate condemned to be harvested of all organs and material without anaesthetic from his feet upwards. They were going to clone his organs and use them for all kinds of things. Once they got to the groin area, there was a description of how the testicles will grow in bunches somewhat like grapes once they are cloned. Then they went to the experience of the inmate as it was happening. It was a pretty sick book.

In serious discussion I'd probably have pointed out that males are heterogametic (contain both sex deterministic chromosomes) making a scenario where we could only produce offspring of a single sex, difficult.

That said, the paternal half of my family have produced 9 male offspring over 3 generations now, and not a single girl. Girlfriends, wives and mothers are dismayed by our numerical advantage when deciding what film or TV channel to watch.

Pretty interesting story-line to play around with. Sounds a bit like the Handmaid's Tale. Science fiction never lets a few details of technical realism get in the way of a good plot - and sci fi can be gritty dystopia every bit as much as shiny space ships.

I would imagine the government might decide to carry out a forced castration program of all but the few men they decided should be allowed to breed, or at least to start surreptitiously putting bromide in the water supply.
