any way to set a unit's spotting abilities?

Recommended Posts

Is there any way to give a unit the ability to spot/engage targets at a greater distance? Specifically helicopter gunners.

You can use an addon for this here is a couple that can help:

Infantry Stealth and Recognition Skills

and

RMM_AI_Range

http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8510

You can find most stuff to upgrade or change your game on Armaholic,

heres the main link, anything you are looking for will be under downloads:

And if you're still not satisfied, you may write a little script/fsm for your chopper that scans the desired spot distance/radius (nearestObjects, filtered as desired) and reveals them to your gunner, maybe limit it by revealing only by some chance, etc.. and then you might just go ahead and assign these targets explicitly to your gunner..

Hi,

You can find everything you need in here.

This makes me wonder how the spotTime and spotDistance work, does zero mean they spot faster or slower, the same with distance and how these are effected when just setting their skill to one using just setskill, I have noticed that they are not very good even when set to one just using setskill as far as those two settings.

EDIT: After doing some testing this appears to be yet another set of commands that are ignored, or the AI are just not very good.

1 makes them faster to find/engage/kill enemies.

0 makes the contrary.

From my testing they do nothing, AI are AI and in this game it's just A without any I.

You get different results?

Nope, don't really care too much for making a mission dependant on external addons either, I would rather like the game material I already have to actually work.

I did a little testing and I could see a difference using some of the skill settings but they were of little use.

I had a sniper 500 meters away and wanted him to shoot at me, that wasn't a problem.

The problem was the bullets always fell short by about 40 meters, so increased all the skill settings and what happened was that all his bullets had a much tighter grouping but still 40meters short.

I then removed all skill setting and just used the in editor setting and set it to zero.

I found this helped as he sprayed the bullets about a bit and on the odd occasion even hit the target.

hahaha. Even a blind man may sometimes hit the mark.

:D

But seriously, this sounds like some skills do not have a proper (or only half-assed) effect, in this case probably "aimingAccuracy". If all it does is reducing the spread-radius of the bullets, while not increasing the initial position accuracy (or reducing that error respectively), then I can see how this ends up in a scenario as you described, where better aimingAccuracy is actually worse in the end:

^^

:icon_dj::rofl:

Sounds like a new ticket is due. Obviously the spread-radius should never be smaller than the position-error.

I think it should. The question is, should the targets position error decrease with each shot? I mean, a sniper should see if rounds land short and correct for it. How quickly it decreases could depend on his general/observation skill, class, and weapon type; assault rifle (slowest), grenade launchers (incl. statics), machinegun, sniper weapons, and mounted machineguns (fastest).

At great distance, even ZU-23s are not able to calculate for target lead. I find it possible to "outrun" a ZU gunner trying to home in on me. Especially easy now when you see all the tracers.

I don't know, just thinking out loud here...

You've summed up my thoughts exactly guys, the first few shots can be hit and miss but if you stand still he should find the range very quickly. A sniper who can't find a static target at 500meteres won't be a sniper for long.
