    Discussion on "Axed" Features

What metalkraze is referring to is that some bugs/tickets/issues, even though they are "hot" topics, or are highly voted upon on the issue tracker, have not been acknowledged, commented on, or been fixed in the meantime. Even hearing some of the developers I got the impression that they think communication wasn't "enough", although, of course, communication is a time consuming process and proper communication (i.e. saying something that can't be misinterpreted/ripped apart/turned around) is unfortunately VERY difficult and very time consuming. Sure, devs have been actively involved in the forum, but mostly avoided directly commenting on things like future plans, direction and "feedback of feedback", which I can understand in some aspects, and can not understand in other aspects. I guess for BIS, this sort of open development is very new

What the heck ? I just posted where Stratis is located, and didn't know that in Arma, the longitude is the other way around (contrary to, you know, earth). Please do not try to make more out of that than there actually is. That was no political idea behind it, I was just wondering since the recent changelog said something about "adjusted coordinates". That's it. Nothing more to see here- And for your information, longitude and latitude describe geographic coordinates on earth, it's not "for mission coordination" or anything like that. sigh... not again... Besides, this is moving from slightly off topic to extremely off topic for this thread (development blogs and reveals)

Now, that IS funny actually, since latitude positive is not south but north in the rest of the world
  4. Also, "turn out" on those vehicles does not work, the view point is moved outside, but you can't see yourself in third person view. Nice to see that those two have commander positions

I just pointed out that the island is now situated in the Atlantic ocean. Nothing else. To answer that question, I was more surprised in the beginning when they took an actual existing nation instead of going for a fictional setting like they have done in all previous titles.

    Discussion on "Axed" Features

First things first, DMarkwick, you're post was just the last drop for me, so apologies for picking it out directly. But please read on and try to take this post as it is intended to be: an opinion of someone concerned with Arma and tired of the tone that is creeping into the forum recently. I always like how posts here tend to become hidden (or open) insults. It's ridiculous how you disqualify everyone who complains about missing features, unfixed bugs (that persist for years), or deviating too much from reality, as "people who cannot fathom the process". I'm working in the software industry for over 20 years, I can "fathom the process" quite well and I'm still not content with the direction Arma 3 is taking (which I won't even reiterate here, but you commented on some of my posts in the past, so I assume you know). It's really become a trend here to disqualify everyone with different opinions. Even though people bring up arguments, they are countered with insult. Not with counterarguments, but just with slander. Or "It's a game/It's an Alpha/It's a beta". When people bring up valid points, they are brushed away with one of those "tools". Not only is this counter productive, it also sours the relationship, not only between customers and company, but also generally lowers the forum's level of friendliness. Any discussion made in such an environment will naturally decline. Sorry, DMarkwick, as much as I respect your opinion, and your right to voice that opinion, posts like this will not calm down the emotions, nor does it actually help. Threads like these ("Rants", if you will) just show that there is discontent, and trying to label the people that are discontent as "not able to fathom the process" does not help at all. So, please, people, try to stay away from insults and slander, and at least try to lead a discussion, with arguments for and against. Thanks for reading

Well, since you mentioned it, I unpacked Stratis and looked up it's coordinates: Longitude 16.48, latitude -35.0... which places it in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean (search for +16 - 35 in Google maps, and scroll out all the way)
  8. Just that you can't FEEL anything since there's no feedback.. sigh... never mind Edit: Maybe it would be possible to add a "sticky" feature to the layout editor, i.e. allow parts of the UI to stay even if the appropriate element would be hidden ?
  9. +1 And the slandering seems to become the norm. Why discuss or present arguments if you can just insult ?
  10. Good question. What is the point of a stance indicator if it doesn't indicate your stance when you want to look at it ? I could understand if they make everything but the little guy in the center fade out (like, the background and such), but the guy and the associated arrows must stay, otherwise, you can disable the whole stance indicator anyway. Anyone with the development branch care to enlighten the rest ? Does it really disappear completely ?

That differs from what I said... how ? ---------- Post added at 10:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:38 AM ---------- The mindset (at least mine) is to tell BIS when I think development is going the wrong way. This has nothing to do with "BIS can't provide". There are decisions being made that are conceptual in nature, not "baaa, we need feature X". Features can be added, but conceptual changes are not going to happen.

Speaking of "difficult to understand": Why do you not understand the actual POINT of the Alpha/Beta: To provde feedback. And that's what is currently being provided by some people. If you start providing feedback after the game is released, you are a little lte to the party. I wonder how often this little fact has to be repeated until everyone got it ? If you complain about the Stalker comparison by quoting that Stalker doesn't even have IK, then you have not understood ANYTHING that has been criticized at all.

I know ;) Hmm... can we add buttons to the editor ourselves ? I have this crazy idea in my head....

    Discussion on "Axed" Features

Alpha/Beta is for collecting feedback. If you complain once the game is out, you're a bit late to the party. ---------- Post added at 08:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:32 PM ---------- I would guess that it would still be possible to script that in the current engine with setCaptive or creating a new OPFOR group.

It was mentioned in one of the , though (highlights at the beginning of the presentation, 18 seconds into the clip). Not wanting to imply that these features are set in stone, but it was more than 1 or 2 enthusiastic commentaries. It's clear that features change and things fall by the roadside during development, though. I still think, though, that communicating is much more important than keeping silent. Even if you might raise false hopes. Everyone can understand that in theory, reality is like theory, but in reality isn't.

:D I agree about the rag-tag features, but we're also speaking of some core features here. As I said in another thread, we have accepted going from "realistic" and "simulator" towards "authentic" and "game". My biggest fear is that the latter is going too far and that we are getting to a point where addons are necessary to bring the game back to "authentic". For example (and yeah, again my pet peeve) the fact that I fail to see any authenticity in being able to carry 170-200 kg.

Aren't you relying on modding a bit too much here ? Your game will in the first place be judged by it's vanilla gameplay, not only by the players, but also by the media. If a review says "it doesn't have rain" (just an example), you can't say "But there's an addon for it". Not the best example, I know, but I exaggerated to make the point come across.
  19. Most, yes. But I said I've seen big budget titles that only had 30 to 40 people actually working on the game I don't think so, and even if, most studios don't need to write the engine themselves, in almost every game these days, they are using a licensed engine (read: almost every game)
  20. That depends. Most of the staff working on larger, big budget titles are marketing, voice acting, support, beta testing and other stuff. I've seen big budget games that had core teams of 30 or 40 people.
  21. That quote is IMHO only partially applicable to programmers. Yes, it's true that more programmers sometimes don't solve the issue. However, the comparison with the pilots is IMHO totally wrong. No pilot make the plane fly faster, unless it's driven by a treadmill. I think Alwarren's assessment isn't too far off. There's only very few actual programmers working on Arma 3. Most are content creators (including scripting and config work) anyway (which is only natural given the nature of the project).
  22. The actual impact on the mission would be negligible. Just because you can use a bipod does not mean you have to redo any mission. That's just an excuse.
  23. Modules would have been the optimal solution. This way, the mission maker (who usually knows best what works for his mission) can determine the system.
  24. Yup.. no idea how to use it though
  25. *YOU* want. That's the key, isn't it ? There's always different ideas of what entertainment is. I play Arma for entertainment too (and yeah, I'm one of the mil-sim guys who take the game waaay to seriously). Arma has always been about authentic (used to be realistic) simulation-type game play. Yeah, VBS isn't a simulator, that's why it's sold by BI Simulations, right ?
