What's everyone's opinion on the campaign? (spoilers)
2nd ranger replied to skyace65's topic in ARMA 3 - OFFICIAL MISSIONS
CSAT didn't just invade during the campaign, they already had a presence on Altis for more than a year, at least since the events of the Bootcamp campaign. CSAT developed the device on Altis with the knowledge of the AAF, perhaps in exchange for helping them financially or materially with their war against the FIA. The British, or whoever Miller is working for, finds out about the device and Miller is sent to steal it (it's hinted in the FFV showcase mission that the FIA has discovered its existence well prior to the events of the East Wind campaign). It's also implied in 'Adapt' that Miller and the CTRG have been helping the FIA for a long time. After NATO invades and repels the CSAT surprise attack, CSAT pretty much hangs back for the rest of the campaign, letting the AAF deal with NATO. This is presumably because testing of the device has been completed, and they dedicate their forces primarily to protecting it as NATO advances, rather than getting into unnecessary skirmishes with them. In the 'good' ending, CSAT has extracted the device, murdered all of the research staff and simply leaves the AAF to be defeated by NATO. In the Miller ending, they realise the device has been stolen and launch an all-out invasion in an attempt to get it back. -

A request to BIS regarding the ending of ArmA's Campaign

I'm perfectly happy to be proven wrong on this, but I've always suspected that Codemasters had alot more to do with the OFP campaigns than anyone is willing to admit. -
A request to BIS regarding the ending of ArmA's Campaign
2nd ranger replied to sberla101's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
THE GENERAL: "Kerry, we've got a situation in Tanoa! The Chinese have invaded, and they're stealing all the mineral wealth, killing civilians at random and poisoning the water supply! The President called and told me to send my best man, so naturally I chose you, a twentysomething asshole who's been a sergeant for five minutes. Your plane's here, get moving soldier!" KERRY: What the literal fuck!? I sincerely doubt it. Also, Kerry sucks and I hope he's dead. -
It's a NATO vest. NATO uses the MX. The vest has 556 mags. They should be MX mags. If you're talking about using the vest for addon units or something, that's a distant concern compared to having the vanilla units looking right. Let's not start wishing for things that will never happen. They'd need to somehow make different animation sets depending on what vest you're wearing.
-
I could live with a version of the new vests with no neck, shoulder or crotch armour if BIS wanted to replace the old vest. But I prefer the look of the old carrier. It just needs new textures and MX mags.
-
Sigh. I don't wanna be the BIS Y U NO guy, but does anybody really care about the VR units? How about improving the NATO uniforms and vests? The multicam looks like it was the first thing made for the game 5+ years ago. Meanwhile, the AAF, which once upon a time was supposed to be the poorest and least-advanced faction, are the guys with the highest quality uniforms. I know this is simply by virtue of the AAF gear being newer assets, but in the game it looks like they have brand new gear while NATO is wearing hand-me-downs. The NATO plate carrier really shows its age when compared to the AAF vests. Not to mention that the NATO vest still has 556 mags in it. I know BIS's preferred solution to that would probably be to get rid of that vest altogether and replace it with the newer heavy vests, but I pray they don't do that because I think the newer vests are terrible. But aside from how they look, those silly shoulder pads cover up the armpatches! Have a cool clan patch? Better not play as NATO!

US Military Mod (80s 90s)
2nd ranger replied to Delta Hawk's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Great news. I hoped you'd get around to doing this, as I had already stopped playing A2 when your units were first released. To be clear: this first release will not include 80s units in the editor, but will include 80s uniforms and gear? -
It's a game. Things don't have to be 100% realistic, especially when it's to the benefit of gameplay. Like not being annoyed by an obnoxiously loud sound just because it's loud in real life. Think of all the things in the game that are unrealistic for gameplay reasons. I think we can make an allowance for a boat engine.
-
Good God, please do this. Every time I play a mission and it starts off with a boat insertion, I go "UGH" and immediately mute the sound. Some missions think it's fun to start you out god damn 2km from the shore so you either listen to this god awful RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR for five minutes, or just turn the sound off until you get there.

If you were to start listing all the military inaccuracies in the campaign then you'd be at it for a while. It begins with minor infractions like characters calling sergeants 'Sir', and culminates in the task force commander waiting for a newly-made sergeant to show up and lead the final assault on the AAF. Most things like that have to be chalked up to 'because it's a game', really. -
I preferred the old 30mm and 40mm cannon sounds. They had a satisfying bassy punch that the new ones lack. Also, some of them sound more powerful than the new tank cannons, the Gorgon in particular. And yeah I can't remember right now which BLUFOR vehicle it is, but the MG on one of them is very noticably looped.
-
It sounds like someone tapping a biro on a desk. The only times it sounds OK is when there is alot of tail reverb that basically masks how weak the shot is. You're right that one of the variants is way worse than the other, but the other one is not good.
-
It's utterly dreadful in every way. This is solid, scientific fact and not open for debate.
-
Never thought I'd say it, but It wasn't great or anything, but it's 300% better than the current one. Really hope weapon samples are still being worked on.
-
Using the animal module, only two animals will move. The rest will stand frozen. Sometimes the frozen ones turn to face another direction, and sometimes they slide along the ground, but they play no animation at all.
-
Fixed in dev branch. Allegedly anyway, haven't tried it yet.
-
Yeah we'll need bats, iguanas and frogs. Hop to it, BIS!

Since one of the main motivations for Tanoa is making a terrain that is lush and green, and that the devs want to make a great rainforest, I'm hoping that they'll finally make things look wet when it rains. Or that the flora has some kind of varying specularity effect based on the weather conditions. I'm not really holding my breath for it, but it would really pump up the immersion. Also, just an idea for the devs: I recall seeing a video of the Unreal engine editor, where there are basically these objects you can place anywhere you want that simulate water running off surfaces. So for example if you're making a mission in heavy rain, you can place these objects above roofs and doorways or on trees, and it looks like rainwater is cascading down from the object. I guess in the Unreal engine it's probably physics-based, but a simple particle effect that can be placed as a module would suffice. Just a thought.

Challenges of Jungle/Marine Warfare in Tanoa
2nd ranger replied to froggyluv's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
To hear how the AI works on user-made terrains in Arma 2? No. -
It's the same universe, but they didn't continue specific storylines.
-
That's a possibility, given BIS's liking for PMCs and the fact that one or more PMC factions were part of the planned assets back when the game was announced. If a campaign is included, it might focus on some kind of PMC story involving the mining operations and a local rebel faction. Those are the missions I'd have in mind anyway.
-
It's you. The quarry/mine is on a hill.

I hadn't either, that's why I took the screenshot. It was a few weeks ago.
