  1. Hi all A Sad Day, friend just told me Dennis Ritchie has died. http://www.cs.umbc.edu/2011/10/dennis-ritchie-inventor-of-the-c-programming-language-has-died/ Dennis was also along with Kenneth Thompson one of the co creators of the Unix the basis of linux and Android. http://www.i-programmer.info/news/82-heritage/3184-dennis-ritchie-co-creator-of-unix-and-c-has-died.html Rest in Peace Dennis, you quietly made the world a better place. 2. Hi all In Reply to this post: Which was posted in the Japan hit by 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami thread. While the debate about getting the imminent danger of a Chernobyl Plus Disaster at the Fukushima plant rightly took place in that thread as it was and is a part of the whole ongoing Japanese Quake and Tsunami disaster; I feel that any of the wider issues involved in the Fukushima disaster and its effects on the future of nuclear power would intrude on that thread So I think it deserves a separate thread. So down to the issues: First up I think our future is either renewables or fusion, if that ever works. I have no objection to studying nuclear power but I would keep the experimental reactors further from people. Say a UN run island not built on a fault line or perhaps by a desert lake. sprayer_faust you raise some valid issues but I think the question is wider, also I think suggestion a) is a none starter and would actually make such such plants just as dangerous if not more so. If I were to take such a step as to re-designing such plants, and they exist across the world, I would suggest that keeping all the radioactive parts at sub surface level would be a more simple solution but IMHO as a reactor design PWR is dead technology due to Fukushima. They result in spent fuel rods that we demonstrably can not safely store, as proved by Fukushima. Japan had even started using the truly deadly Plutonium MOX reactors to try and use up the spent fuel. You may have noticed that it swiftly became the most important of the multiple dangers at the plant to try and contain. Even to the point of allowing the fires in the spent fuel pools to start and ignoring them. The reasons for that are that the Plutonium fuel is incredibly radioactive compared to Uranium and that it is also terribly chemically poisonous. It is also much much more volatile and building both heat and critically much more quickly, storing up more neutrons in the reaction and so being far more likely to jump up from supercriticality required for a self sustaining fission reaction to a prompt-critical event. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prompt_critical That is why Plutonium is used for nuclear weapons, and why they are smaller than Uranium bombs. But all this once again highlights the core problem of the spent nuclear fuel. What do we do with it? At the moment most western agencies store it in open pools. Japan is so over run with them, like many western countries that is re-racking them: http://www.nrc.gov/waste/spent-fuel-storage/pools.html http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/fact-sheets/dry-cask-storage.html This event clearly shows the dangers there. And in this case we have the additional issue of the No.4 Reactor having been shut down for maintenance, all the still active fuel rods were moved out of the reactor in to the storage pool with the already over full with spent fuel rods and re-racked with them. Essentially a potential active nuclear reactor outside its primary containment! And now that the secondary containment is destroyed merrily beavering away creating masses of radiation in the open air! And truth be told that is the threat of every single spent fuel pool in the western world. SURPRISE! Spent Fuel Rods are actually more reactive than Fresh Fuel Rods! Because spent fuel is a marketing misnomer, designed to make the uneducated people think its safer. It aint. In fact they are more reactive and more polluting. The chief reasons spent fuel rods are removed is because they fill up with plutonium and other transuranics as well as highly reactive isotopes and also begin to change the nature of their cladding both in terms of their chemical nature and by thermally distorting them. And all that makes controlling them and preventing a prompt critical event progressively harder and also making a prompt-critical event more likely. So as you can guess from this I am not pro the current nuclear power systems. I would prefer it replaced. That said I think the Molten Salt reactors may be considerably safer. Anyway having started the debate I leave it to others to chip in correct my errors and continue the debate. There are a whole bunch of matters here we have not yet discussed. We use nuclear power to create nuclear weapons, medical systems, welding monitoring etc. etc. We then have the corrupting power of profit intruding in to the whole thing consider that it has contributed both directly to the failure to deal with disaster as promptly as required at Fukushima and also contributed to causing the disaster in the first place. As the media is discovering mostly from certain sources. I suspect the debate might be interesting. Kind Regards walker
  3. Hi all Simple poll should we make the 1%ers and banks ( CEOs board members over the last 15 years) be taxed to pay off austerity? Other questions and suggestions about how to do it can be fleshed out in the thread. Kind Regards walker
  4. Hi all The headless client architecture could be a useful solution to JIP synchronisation, say in CTI type games or any game where there are a large number of entities and dynamic objects and impact on the terrain, the headless client keeps a copy of the servers game data. I mentioned this some years ago in ArmA 1/2 when running the CoC modification. When a player JIPs in, the primary game server hands them off to the synchronisation client. This then acts as a sub server and serves them the data up until say x seconds of synchronisation, it then hands them back to the game server, which updates the last few seconds of game data. I might give it a go ;) Kind Regards walker
  5. The purpose of this thread is information not discussion Hi all New to ArmA II? Begin Simple with a bit of PvP using Vanilla ArmA II on a Vanilla server! I suggest joining a Valhalla server. Dao run an excellent one with one hour matches of between 64 to 128 players there are several others that also run Valhalla! To get on it either filter on Valhalla in mission name or alter your server view by selecting play, for number players, in the view function. You may have to click it twice for highest number of player servers to come to the top. Since Dao tends to be full and runs larger servers they are usually at the top. Fundamentals of ArmA Multiplayer If you are new to the Multiplayer in ArmA II first of all read and download this guide by Terox; it tells you all the fundamentals: http://www.zeus-community.net/important/arma2_mp_guide.pdf The thread discussing this manual is here: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=93078 Lost in Addon hell? Don't know where to start in MP? Quick and Dirty getting started: So you have decided to step out in to the wider world of Addons here is where to start. http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?p=1608532#post1608532 Manual Authors Can anyone who has an MP manual for a mission type or for some aspect of ArmA II Multiplayer please post a link to their on line manual in this thread. A quick reminder to Mission authors that the BIS wiki is good place to place your mission manuals. ;) This thread is not a place to discuss game forms or manuals; it is for linking to where you can discuss such game forms, and find information on ArmA II Multiplayer including game forms and their manuals. ArmA II Manuals There is a manual that comes with all copies of ArmA II. If you have not got one contact the publisher and report it to BIS. For those with steam the US version can be downloaded here: http://store.steampowered.com/manual/33900/ There is also the official ArmA II Website http://www.arma2.com/ There are videos there telling you about the basic controls, using the the editor etc. As well as Outlines of the narrative and socio-historical background to the conflict and basic Weapon and Vehicle descriptions. There is the BIS Wiki http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Main_Page Which is a wealth BIS's OFP and ArmA knowledge. If you look in the first page contents links OR use the search OR use the index you will find the Hints and Tips section: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Category:Hints_%26_Tips There is an additional ArmA II hints and tips section! http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/ArmA_II_Hints_and_Tips As well as additions to the Battle Drills section: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Battle_Drills If you are acting as a server admin the basic commands are here: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Armed_Assault:_Multiplayer_Server_Commands The ArmA II Bible There is stickied in the General Section "Dslyecxi's ArmA2 Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures Guide" http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=74994 That is the bible of ArmA II play it has sections that apply to PvP and others that particularly apply to the Coop game form. ArmA II User tutorial videos A search for ArmA II tutorial videos reveals several other user made ArmA II tutorial videos. They vary in quality. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ArmA+2+tutorial&search_type=&aq=f Finding a server to play on There are three basic ways to find a server in ArmA II: The in-game MP browser which uses GameSpy. This has several functions such as the ability order servers by number of players, server name, ping etc. This you do by clicking on their heading. You also have a filter that allows you to search for a specific server or server type. This is fully described in the ArmA II manual see the link above. External server browsers They are listed in this stickied thread in the MP section of the forum: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=78018 The clan servers in the ArmA 2 - SQUADS AND FANPAGES section http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?f=90 There is a stickied squad and clan list that gives a basic description of each clan as well as a link to their website. There are also individual threads for most clans so you can lean a little more on each. Clans and squads vary in size from 10s up to 100s of individuals, and they cater for all game types. PvP, Coop etc. Some run their own internal leagues and ladders others are part of an external league. Some do not play ranked PvP. Others only play coop. Some have very formal joining and game play methods others are more anarchic. Just choose a clan that suits you. Team Vs Team, PvP Game Modes Unlike other games in ArmA II you are not limited to official game modes. Users can make their own missions and game forms. This is often confusing for those used to just CTF and DM. Tom_Anger has begun keeping an index of PvP and TvT game modes in the top post of this thread that you will find useful if just starting out in ArmA II. http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=80316 Mission Manuals These manuals tell you the basics about some of the more popular game forms, they are not in any order in fact one of my favourites is Berzerk and it is at the bottom. 8. Hi all What I am about to write has been taboo in science for 20 years, even to the point of being censored in Wikipedia, and in fact that censorship was the reason one of Wikipedia's chief editors left Wikipedia, but that is just a side story. So I am going to stick my head above the parapet, as many scientists are also doing now: Straight up the Pons and Fleischmann effect is real. And Scientists at NASA as well as many other research centers around the world have now verified it. Just as a taster, to keep you hooked and because there is a lot of technical stuff here to wade through I am going to start with a video from NASA: 42hrCRx1JJY Source: NASA Future Innovation at Langley: http://www.youtube.com/user/NASAinnovation History What is the Pons and Fleischmann effect? Basicly excess heat observed in reactions beyond what is explainable by chemistry. At the time Pons and Fleischmann wrote "Fusion?" as a possible explanation for the anomalous heat being observed. In the process of the paper being edited for publication in a peer reviewed publication someone removed the question mark and the press added "Cold Fusion!" Which upset the physics community as they new the coulomb barrier meant the two Deuterium atoms could not be smashed together, in this way, without a lot more force, as the strong nuclear force of their positive charge would keep them apart. Pons and Fleischman where chemists, and anyway did not say this, they just put out the question to the physicists: What is this? Its not chemical so is it fusion? The second major problem was this was cutting edge chemistry and the physicists who attempted to repeat the experiment were not chemists. The main problem was the quality of the Palladium Lattice electrode. This meant that back in 1989 MIT and the other researchers were never able to repeat the experiment and Pons and Fleischmann had problems themselves when they got palladium lattice from a different source to their original. It is now understood that the Lattice needs to be pumped to ensure maximum saturation of Deuterium and to keep the reaction going. So frequency of the electrical circuit is important. The second problem was the lack of a theory to explain the effect. That was because there was a third problem, new physics or rather failure by physicists to investigate fully a piece of nuclear physics that was considered unimportant, the weak nuclear force discovered by Fermi but hardly investigated since due to some oversight by a physics community mesmerised by the strong Nuclear force reactions. So now I have to present the evidence: Evidence First up there are now several different methods of creating the effect the earliest was of course the Pons and Fleischmann method as described back in 1989: Since then the process has been refined both by Pons and Fleischmann and other researchers particularly at MIT and Stanford. Since then several other methods of creating the effect have been discovered, including the use Nickel in a powdered form with Deuterium gas. Here is a simplified video explanation of the Palladium lattice loading process that caused so many problems for Scientists trying to repeat the Pons and Fleischmann experiment ignore the source it is just pretty video to make concept easy to understand: PSVTg_yfwgg Well that is a pretty video but where is the theory that explains how it creates energy? Theory So what is happening? There are several competing hypotheses for the theory. They have been gathered here: http://newenergytimes.com/v2/sr/Theories/TheoryIndex.shtml The one that is currently in vogue is the The Widom-Larsen Ultra-Low-Momentum Neutron Catalyzed Theory of LENRs or Widom Larsen Theory. http://newenergytimes.com/v2/sr/WL/WLTheory.shtml Others key theoretical explanations include: The CECR Quantum Reaction Hypothesis put forward by Brillouin http://effedix.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/brillouinenergyhypothesis2.pdf Here is a video of the presentation for it: B63_I616khU Talbot A Chubb's theory of three Deuterium DD fusion types http://www.lenr-canr.org/acrobat/ChubbTAthreetypes.pdf And of course the Kim, Zubarev; Quantum Plasma Theory of Cold Fusion which has been well recieved throughout the scientific community. http://newenergytimes.com/v2/sr/Theories/KimTheory.shtml Which theory will win out is still a matter of contention. Ok all good and well but that is just some websites where is the peer reviewed papers, I want the Science from reputable sources. Published papers and conferences Well things started to really roll with a conference hosted by Cafe Science in Silicon Valley, doesn't it always nowadays? Then early this year several papers were presented at CERN as was mentioned in another thread, they have now all been put together at CERN: http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=177379 This is the CERN video page http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1433865/ Additional videos here: http://cdsweb.cern.ch/search?ln=en&cc=Video+Lectures&sc=1&p=lenr&f=&action_search=Search And just this month a whole bunch of new papers were presented. Here is a video of the conference: iS4qNbMCBL0 You can get the Abstracts papers and Notes for the conference here: http://newenergytimes.com/v2/conferences/2012/ICCF17/ICCF-17.shtml Those are both experimental studies and pure theory papers and presentations there is a lot to wade through. (I will high light some of them in latter posts) Who believes this? Scientists at Universities such as MIT, Stanford, Bologna, Perdu, Missouri, as well as investment groups and companies from National Instruments to Boeing, Toyota and Mitsubishi and researchers for the US military should all point to the dawning realization that this is real. In fact MIT has had an LENR running at the University since January and Stanford has been at the fore front of getting LENR to run reliably by working on the theory side and refining the engineering. The fact that Scientists at NASA all the way up to the Chief Scientist at Langley are willing to put their name to it and that that same Chief NASA scientist then Briefed the US President's Science Advisor who in turn recently briefed President Obama should all point to the monumental importance of what this means. http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/sensors/PhySen/docs/LENR_at_GRC_2011.pdf These papers were then obtained through a Freedom of information request This is first is linked to the video at the top of this thread and is an overview of the state of play at that time, bare in mind it took a while to pry this out of their hands: http://newenergytimes.com/v2/government/NASA/20110922NASA-Zawodny-GRC-LENR-Workshop.pdf This second is a report on Andrea Rossi who everyone is holding at arms length because he is so secretive, which does not engender trust, but if he cannot patent his product because of government restrictions it is perhaps understandable, jury is still out but with his products now selling to customers we will know in a month or so. http://newenergytimes.com/v2/government/NASA/20110922NASA-Nelson-GRC-LENR-Workshop.pdf This what the Chief of Science at NASA Langley has presented: http://newenergytimes.com/v2/government/NASA/20110922NASA-Bushnell-GRC-LENR-Workshop.pdf There are several other Freedom of Information requests about NASA with regard to this but they have been redacted or refused, so more is to come. The DOE opinion has changed as result here is what Albert L. Opdenaker, Office of Fusion Energy Sciences; U.S. Department of Energy: http://iccf9.global.tsinghua.edu.cn/1news/13doe/2011/DOE2011.pdf This is what the US President was told. Holding this back until verified So what are they doing? Mosly just research with one or two exceptions: A character mentioned in all this is Andrea Rossi, some say he is a fake whether he is or not, the Anomalous heat effect exists and scientists across the world have repeated the experiment but you cannot mention this subject without mentioning him he is either a Maverick or a Hoaxer I would not say he is a fraud as he has paid for all this out of his own money so the only person he has defrauded is himself. Rossi’s canny attitude may be because of the old hangover of the ban on Cold Fusion patents in the US from the 1989 debacle, as a result he has been taking the Edisonian approach of Build it and get it to market, prove it works sell, swamp the market to keep out competitors and upgrade it then claim patent with a vast anount of lawyers funded off a successful product. In fact he got a military license for the product after it was tested by them. It is claimed, by numerous scientists from various countries who have bet their career on it, to work and it has been heating a building at Bologna University for the past 9 months. Rossi just sold a 1 Mw device reportedly to the US military and is said to have orders for 12 more this week. The Jury is still out on Rossi for a month though. Others like Brillouin are also in the race to market. http://e-catsite.com/2012/08/30/sri-to-sign-contract-with-brillouin-energy/ So why is the Media not writing about this? Actually they are, it started over the last year or so with articles like this: http://www.energybulletin.net/stories/2012-04-29/peak-oil-crisis-quantum-fusion-hypothesis CNBC went public today probably because of rumours about major announcements and public demonstrations due around the world in September and October. http://www.cnbc.com/id/48615362 But is not just the science or the products by the likes of Rossi and others, it is not just that the EEC announced research funding, that MIT and a host of other University's have working versions, that the theory now has weight, and the US President was briefed on it by his Science advisor, after the head of NASA came out and said it works and let's start building, it is not that countries round the world now have programs, it is not that the media have stopped treating it with derision, it is not that the scientific papers are being published and peer reviewed, it is not that the patents are now being granted, NASA just took one out, it is not just that the wind farm sites have put it on their front pages. It is that the oil business market pages are warning that it works. The sad thing is that one of the two co-discoverers died when the goal of cheap power for the whole world was in sight. :( Martin Fleischmann (29 March 1927 – 3 August 2012) Kind Regards walker Post script will be adding to this post as it took a bit of writing I had to draw together things I had been following for half a decade! And I need to add in links to things I skipped over because I know them but I am not explaining them adequately, please bare with me

  10. Hi all The E-cat confirmed to work by Swedish Scientists working for the Swedish Government Energy research company Elforsk, the independent tests were run in an independent Swiss lab. Rossi merely installed the E-cat powder in their test rig and took it away after the tests. They were allowed to open it up and examine the contents before and after the tests, isotope analysis of the fuel and its resultant ash shows an unknown nuclear process, that needs further investigation. http://nextbigfuture.com/2014/10/third-party-report-on-32-day-continuous.html It is due to be published in Journal of Physics D and the Cornell University Arxiv it is currently under embargo but a leaked copy of an earlier draft of the reports is where this comes from. 16. Hi all Minecraft is being used in Schools; would ArmA be a better option? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-27936946 With its free tools and coding abilities ArmA has superior educational benefits, for art, science, programming and story telling. Maybe BIS should consider an educational release? Kind Regards walker
  17. Hi all In reply to the points about age and ArmA Content. I am talking about the engine, not the game, I suppose I should have said Real Virtuality Engine. The Minecraft example is customised to purpose. Same as Real Virtuality was re-purposed to War Z, VBS, Take on Helicopters, Iron Front: Liberation 1944, Carrier Command Gaea, Take on Mars and all the other User MODs a version of the engine can be re-purposed to education. The concept is to realise the engine is a cash cow. Exposing potential programmers and gamers to the engine and its underlying concepts, would be a plus for BIS. It just needs a small team to set up an offshoot core mod team of say four. The first bit would be stripping ArmA back to essentials. Then adding in basic educational materials. The idea being that users would add in additional content same as they always have in the BIS community. Kind Regards Walker
  18. Hi all In Reply to MistyRonin on how to use the ArmA engine as an educational tool. To teach kids scripting right up to advanced programming. For the purposes of education in narrative for Language Composition and how it is used in film making and the games industry, via mission and campaign making. In project planing for large events. To teach mathematics with real world uses of maths, learning geometry using scripting makes the concepts more likely to stick. To teach Physics. To teach biology, consider linda. To geography, map reading but more important creating a terrain based on real terrain and what were the shaping factors that create natural terrains. I could go on but I am sure lots of other modders and mission makers will do so. Kind Regards walker

Instead they spin stories about how bad the Turkish Prime Minister is for banning YouTube and Twitter or about his party's election efforts or that the story is about Turkey's reaction to Syrian operations. When we can all see that the story is about a false flag operation. Google translations of the transcript and friends who speak Turkish can tell you what the western media were told was in the conversation by their own translators yet our western media does not tell us these facts. Instead they spin the story to distract and fool us. Where now the free western media? In Stalin's back pocket that is where. In the west we now have a soviet era Pravda for our press. Bans on YouTube and Twitter coming to UK and US soon. Sadly walker POST SCRIPT Ah a bright spark in the Darkness; a Journalist at the Washington post has the courage to speak out among a western media that largely seems to have lost its moral and ethical compass. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2014/03/27/by-banning-youtube-has-turkey-revealed-just-how-damning-todays-leaked-recording-is/

Syria - What should we do if anything?

Hi all Syria's current regime are not worth wiping up with toilet paper, they need an enema with a fire hose, but by doing such inept things western Governments, organisations, and media bring them selves down to the same level. If we are going to go in just say that the Syrian regime needs removing and get on with it. Oh and stop supporting the other evil regimes in the middle east like Saudi Arabia, the Qatar and Israel. Syria - What should we do if anything?

Hi all A false flag operation for Turkey. The operation gets blown. So Turkey bans Twitter and YouTube to prevent people finding out. We all know what happens when you do that So the western press say its just a discussion of Syria. And that the banning of Twitter and YouTube is because there was an election. The recording and the transcripts do not bear that out, since they must have employed their own translators they must know what the recording says. Sadly our western press no longer tells the truth. :( The problem here is that we are trying to deal with Russia and the Ukraine, but we can no longer trust what our own press says. Talk about the BBC, CNN Fox and the rest shooting themselves in the foot. Kind Regards walker
