Daytime thermal use - 'cheating' ?

Recommended Posts

^ Obviously OA IR is too effective. The trees should be hotter.

This is not the same as open desert of course.

AH-64D FLIR 16:20

flir01.jpg

Not that much contrast like the original but quite ok if you ask me.

how come mine was much darker? Is it the ULB?

It does make me kind of, annoyed perhaps, everyone gets on BIS back so damn much about adding new features, people made the biggest shit storm ever about how there was no FLIR yet.

BIS have worked really hard to get FLIR in there and working properly, yet somehow we end up with this whole thread saying how unrealistic and poor it is.

Now, I am not missing the point here, I know it's not the same as real life. But seriously, do you think there is any software out there that can deal with full blown ambient temperatures, heat transfer, and different light spectrums? Why does everyone always ask for so much?

You get the FLIR, and now all you are doing is moaning how it's not perfect compared to real life. I mean wtf!

The ratio of "moaning" threads compared to "thanks" threads is pretty poor these days.

If the FLIR is not good enough for you just don't use it.

rant over/

Yeah, on the UAV there is a green layer, perhaps to simulate a TV screen or something.

If people actually looked, the default FLIR does have pretty cool ambient look like in the Apache ^^

Richie.

Hey - here's and idea (and no - I haven't read this whole f'n thread)... :)

This appears to be basically the same FLIR/thermal system as used in VBS2. You all may've heard of that? It is the combat simulator software of choice of many very good military branches across the world. Governments spend millions of dollars a year on VBS2 training for troop. Of course, not all of that involves FLIR/thermal sighting. But, this appears to be the same system, since VBS2 and ArmA2 are "cousins" in terms of development.

So... if it is good enough for real governments with real militaries doing real training... it is good enough for me. :)

Don't confuse constructive discussion with "moaning"

For the record, I'm happy that thermal imaging was finally added to the game and absolutely fine how good it turned out. It's better than I expected.

Yeah - richie - I'm the last person to start a 'moaning' thread. I suppose I was just intrigued by the real life usage of the tool and whether it were realistic to use it during daylight hours. Tbh all BIS could do would be to lower the contrast of hot targets during daylight hours.

Yeah Richie, I think you're taking these comments too hard.

I LOVE OA but I think with all the effort they've put into the thermal system its a bit of an oversight to leave the ambient temperature out of the equation completely. Especially since all they have to do is lower the contrast and add brightness during the day. (hopefully progressively up to maximum at midday and then back down in the evening)

I've had a few chances to mess around with hand-held FLIR in the city and woods

in summertime and winter.

Looks pretty damn good to me.

The FLIR is based on textures, open the pbo's and then paa's in textview2's G channel I believe it is and you iwll see a greyscale map, most of the unit if a vehicle is grey and parts white, the white 'heats up' over time..basicly read this.

http://developer.vbs2.com/onlinehelp/Content/Adding_Models/How_to/AMHT_Thermal_Imaging.htm

The FLIR textures can be tweaked to be more contrast or less and even fuzzy and less distinguishable to reflect on older generations of FLIR.

Well each person making a "Thanks thread" and not much else, is pretty much spam, since theres a thread for thanks.

People "moan" because we realise how amazing this game is and we all want it to get better. Just quietly ignoring it probably wont lead to it being improved. (if it does actually need improving mind you)

Whats up with people who are, on purpose, not being critical of obviously problematic portions of the game? Its like, an incredibly hot women with a big spider bite on her neck and your not going to say anything lol

People probably think im retarded for this, but i pretty much never use thermal because it makes it harder to make out the terrain, plus im usually in close quarter combat, the main thing i use thermal on is vehicles, but as a soldier i like CCO sights and Holographic sights

Fair enough and everything, I totally agree that we should give good quality feedback. That's what we should be doing for sure.

What annoys me is that everyone seems to think that BIS are all retarded, and that unless we tell them what to do, they will simply do nothing?

Absolutely, make a thread asking about the FLIR, and how you would like it to be changed to make it more realistic. That's a good thing to do, and no doubt BIS will listen, so long as it's actually possible.

But is it really necessary to have a whole thread ranting about it? Just make one of those tickets asking for it to be changed slightly, make a thread so everyone knows to vote, and leave it at that.

All I am trying to say is, you could probably be a bit more subtle in how you report things that may be incorrect. This is a great community and everything, just we can sometimes be a little bit too hard on BIS ^^

Richie.

The whole thread again, was more of a enquiry into the real life usage of Thermal imaging and whether It were realistic to use it.

It seems it is - that evolved into a 'what could be better about it ' type thread - and there are improvements to be made. The more people see it - the higher chance someone will report it. I personally am happy with it the way it is.

Mr. Vincent put forth a valid point. The FLIR that we currently have is a little too perfect. A good helping of film grain and interference might make it a little more realistic.

Oh, and yes FLIR is usable in a daytime environment, in the real world that is.

Well yeah but the problem original issue isn't even the most obvious one I think. Most people can see that the FLIR isnt exactly like reality in daytime, but still the flir tech in the game is still new and can be worked on. Balances of weapon loadouts are a lot easier to balance you'd think.

That seems valid to me, i think people get annoying because it takes some effort to get a really good game otherwise things can go crap pretty quickly.

With regards to the contrast of the FLIR in game I think its pretty good, for what it is, just look at the "hot spots" system used in cricket...
