Peps dont run Didicated beta servers anymore

Recommended Posts

I for one have always been running my didi-server with latest beta, and its been working very well. For now i have stopped using beta on my server, and it seems that almost all others have stopped it too.

Why ??

Bec all clitents (nonbetas) sees the server in the browser with a red questionmark.

This means that no-one is joining the server (even though they can join).

Imho this should be changed back, the old way worked quite well.

I must admit, I used to run betas on my personal server. The reason I don't right now is that my server is Combined Ops and there's nothing game breaking that applying a beta would fix.

I realise that this isn't helping the public beta assurance process that I was so vocally in favour of, but until a worthwhile fix is included in a beta, then I wont go to the inconvenience for myself and my users of running a beta on the server.

there are worthwhile fixes included in beta builds ...

not every change is in the public beta changelog , as was stated multiple times

(for example crash fixes, minor tweaks and so on)...

so not running it You most likely will have worse experience on Your server ...

I would run it, BUT when we did, we had half our normal amount joining, which ruined the game more than any minor glitches......

Dorph and SbSmac have hit the nail on the head imho

We are not running beta's at the moment for the very same reason. There is a considerable difference in player numbers connecting when you have a green button next to your server in the gamespy browser than when it is red.

Because gamespy now see's the beta as a -mod, it shows up as red.

There isnt much point in running a beta and testing the game patches for BIS if nobody joins it.

If you want us to do something for you, make it easy and we most likely will

One possible temporary workaround for this is to extract the beta folder content into the root structure of a copy of your master arma2/OA install. This way it will most likely show up in green.

This is something I started thinking about doing yesterday but havent tried yet.

No reason why it wont work, afterall its only an updated version of a previous file.

I for one though am getting a bit tired of all the extra work involved in trying to offer a gaming server for B.I games. As every engine is released it gets more and more difficult not easier like it should.

The clients need more and more support to get an MP game going, which means more and more time spent on backend or admin and less time doing the fun stuff like playing on the server.

I love the game, but am really getting fed up with half assed implementations, 8 year old bugs and poor documentation.

I know BIS are trying to resolve some of the issues but that doesnt reduce the frustration that I (And surely other Dedi Server providers) are suffering.

Without us, there wouldnt be an MP environment for BIS games..............................

Exactly what i mean Dwarden, id love to run the latest beta-server, i tried, but after its marked with red ? sign in server-lobby (for non beta-users) no one joins other than a very few beta clients. So my server is back to latest official patch.

We also have reverted to the vanilla game because of the drop in randomers which keep our server ticking over. The answer is that We need an official patch ASAP, with all the fixes and cpu and memory optimisations that have been added so far.

We always run the latest beta-patches on our server. To get rid of that "red question-mark" all you need to do is move the "beta-contents" upwards to the root-path and overwrite the original files. Now you don´t need to use the - -mod-command for running the beta anymore.

Of course this is not gonna be called "best practice" I guess but if you make a copy of your original-dir before you do this nothing can really happen. At least this works for us and the player numbers exploded after I did it this way.

100% agreed, I have exactly the same thoughts (but at the end we still keep going, its just too addictive of a game)
