robmypro 10 Posted January 23, 2010 Okay just getting into this sim. Do most people use the keyboard, gamepads, or something else? What is the best way to experience this sim from the controls point of view? Thanks for the help. Rob
Zipper5 74 Posted January 23, 2010 Gamepads are ok for vehicles, but stick to mouse and keyboard for everything else. Personally, I just use them for everything.
Lou Montana 101 Posted January 23, 2010 soldier : keyboard + mouse - WASD, alt for freelook, Ctrl to switch high/low weapon, Shift to switch walk/run, space for the firemode (since OFP ^^) car : keyboard + moues sometimes (soft driving, since they arranged it) tank : keyboard (mouse for freelook and firing) chopper : keyboard. Only keyboard. plane : same as chopper ! But remember that the best configuration is the one you feel fine with :)
Mysteryman5150 10 Posted January 23, 2010 I personally use a gamepad for driving, a joystick for flying and the keyboard and mouse(10 button) for infantry and command. However, like Lou said, the best is your own personal preference. This game is awesome in the way that it allows numerous control devices to be used as well as mapping your keys and control buttons. Somethings can have keyboard and joystick/gamepad controls mapped to them at the same time. Therefore, you can test both ways out without having to change anything. Good luck robmypro. the unknown 0 Posted January 23, 2010 Mostly keyboard and mouse, I use a joystick with a tank if I am playing a organized game so I have more control over the tanks speed. The keyconfig has been changed back to the old OFP layout with a couple of changes to fit in the new options. Btw how in the world are you suppose to play this game with a controller wouldn't you have a shortage on keys.
robmypro 10 Posted January 23, 2010 Thanks guys. Sounds like the keyboard and mouse are the best bets for most cases. BTW, I just went through training on the demo. Damn, sweet sim. There goes my social life. Rob
jw custom 56 Posted January 23, 2010 I'm using mouse+keyboard for everything, at first i never thought i would learn to fly but with a little stubbornness i managed to do it quite well :)
Simon C 0 Posted January 23, 2010 I use the mouse and keyboard for infantry and land vehicles, a joystick for aircraft and occasionally a racing wheel for vehicles.
dmarkwick 261 Posted January 23, 2010 Keyboard, mouse, Belkin N52te, Thrustmaster Cougar, TrackIR 3. Still looking for the perfect mix, I only recently got the N52 so I'm probably not using that to it's best.
jasonnoguchi 11 Posted January 24, 2010 (edited) Wolf King Keyboard (game pads do not usually have numbers and F buttons necessary in ArmA2 for commanding squad), 5 buttons mouse (I use IME3.0), Trackir 4 Pro, a good headset so you can command your squad by voice and triplehead if you can for unparalleled situation awareness (I am still working on this one). Of all of these gadgets, I would say that the TrackIR makes the biggest difference. You are missing out A LOT (literally) if you are not playing with TrackIR.
