Steerable parachute

Recommended Posts

I have made a parachute that flies like a square chute.

Does anyone knows how to move the camera from its current butt-ugly position to somewhere around the players head?

Please try it and suggest improvements.

You may need a stick to steer the chute.

Download addon and example mission

The .pbo file goes in the \addons directory, the rest in

mission\chutedemo.Abel\

*bump*

Isn't there a singe config.cpp expert out there who knows how to change the viewpoint from a vehicle?

OMG this is the Add-on of the year!

This is one of the most wacked out forums I have ever seen.

Over 5000 post about wheather or not a nifty-fifty should be in OFP and here this post sits for 2 full days without any responces... wierd.

Well here's what I think...

HOLYBAT CRAP I'VE DIED AND GONE HEAVEN!!!

A FREAKING AMAZING!!

YOU ARE GOD!

Here's what you can do with utterly phenominal add-on this most gracious human-being haseth bestowed upon us:

1) Total control over your RoD "Rate of Decsent"

You can float to earth like pretty little butterfly at 2ft. per minute and cover 2 or 3 miles of ground:):):) or totally blow it and come in so fast you bounce off the ground like a gumb doll.... lol.

2) Total control over your Direction.

It takes a few seconds to gain control but I also use a keyboard... To freakin' cool for words.

All paratroopers report AT ONCE... Your wet-dream has arrived!

SquareCanopy v 0.1

New:

-AI does actually land now (maybe)

-More realistic sink rate

-Made it harder to climb

-More realistic handeling

Things I don't have a clue about how to fix:

-the fucking viewpoint

-uses a ugly hack to land the thing without dying

-would have to use even uglier hack to open in freefall.

-how to make a model of a ram-air parachute

-the AI in general

Get the new version here:

here.

I haven't tested it yet, but it looks really cool.

You can't.

Look at the example mission, or use the editor to insert an empty SquareCanopy, then type nameOfPlayer moveindriver nameOfSquareCanopy in the player init field.

In the canopy's initfield type [nameOfPlayer,nameOfCanopy] exec "para.sqs" .

This script deletes the Square canopy and makes a new round just before you hit the ground. It is POSSIBLE to land without the script, but most of the times, you end up dying.

What do you mean you can't slow down? Sure you can... Look up while pressing 'q' <---you "UP" button.

I can do swoop and hawks like a freaking ballet dancer with the first version you posted. Like I said it takes a second to gain control of the chute...

1) Look straight ahead for the first few seconds. The first few secomds the chute will toss side to side... STAY CALM! Keep looking straight ahead and UP a little. Don't man-handle the stick... go easy as it begins to settle.

2) Once it settles... Oh baby! Guys... it's just like flying the cessna... actually its just like flying a hang-glider! Point your nose down and you move forward and you Rate of Descent will increase also. Point you nose up... your Rate of Decent slows and so does your forward movement.

3) I use keyboard & mouse to play OFP.

UP + Look up = To slow down forward movement and RoD.

DOWN + Look down = Increses both RoD and forwardmovement.

The reason your diying is you are either:

1) hitting the ground to hard = RoD to fast.

2) Moving forward to fast when you touchdown... even tryed jumping out of a moving jeep? You die. Why? Moving to fast.

ARKADEYEVICH:

I can't find anything wrong with this add-on AS IS. Im not sure what you mean by "Bad Veiw"... When I use it I see the normal parachute veiw... whatelse did you want?

This is how it looks like

Yes, the speed is way to high. I usually land it at 80 km/h, but have been able to get as low as 40 by stalling the canopy just over the ground. Still way too fast.

My RL parachute flies so slow that with a good landing fall it is possible to fly it right into the ground almost without flaring (done that a coupe of times).

I like it. Very east to manuever, though I had some ocillation problems (which is a no-no in real life, it can kill you) Groundspeed is a liitle too fast, you are right. 1st person view is ugly as you stated. Works good from 3rd person view. Which is which I usually use to parachute. Would be cool if you could model a ram-air chute. Overall I like it alot though. Has alot of potential

The chute is great. Once you get the hang of it flying it is great fun. However, may I suggest an altometer and a speedometer?

Also see if you can't get in contact with someone proficiant with Milkshape 3D to make a square canopy.

And what is with that annoying view? Why can't you get the normal chute view?

Try this mission and you will se why a speedometer is no good idea. Without one you don't know that you can fly past terminal speed and that your landingspeed is just too fucking high.

I have scripted an altimeter and a speedometer, I don't yet know how to make a real one.

I am trying to make a chute that doesn't fly like

this.

About that view: It gets that way when I change the simulation from "parachute" to "airplane".

Have no idea why or how to fix it.

I don't really care about a proper model yet, I want it to fly right first.

I just finished trying these out and they are great! Very nice work.

Bugs:

When you look at another soldier through the scope of your XMS or whatever you dont see the parachute (if your looking at your own guy). It looks like they have just ejected out of a chopper or something.

Second, when you hit esc then retry ive noticed that it again looks like you have just ejected out of something.

Over all this thing is great. Good job and i cant wait until you get a square chute model.

I noticed this too...and sometimes when I started up a mission the chute haden't opened at all...but the flight physics where still there fortunately, so I didn't smash into the floor.

I don't know if it was a feature you were aiming for but I love the fact you can eject and a 'spare' chute opens...actually kinda realistic.

If you are struggling to survive a landing try ejecting just before impact, you land on your feet with no damage taken. I think that lots of times I died I simply died because the parachute was 'destroyed' and as far as the game engine is concerned you are in the chute...like an aircraft. Talking of being destroyed...I don't suppose you could stop it exploding on impact could you?

Also can you make it so that it is only useable once? If the chute isn't destroyed by the impact and it is still around you can actually get back 'in' as if it was a vehicle and you apparently stand on your head with the parachute half opened against the ground...very bizarre...try and get it to disappear like the official chute.
