Does anybody play DM anymore?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I don't see much DM games on line, or player that play them. In the last couple of weeks I saw probably a half a dozen servers playing DM while there were a few pages of servers playing cti, coop, etc. What is going on:confused:? Is DM not popular type of game anymore? Am I not looking in the right place?

While coop and other types are good games and everything, I really don't have time to travel to the objective for a half an hour than get killed in a minute and start over again:)(sarc). I want to get in a game and start shooting right away:yay: and be responsible for myself only:yay:.

Am I the only one like that?

Is there any poll on how many playing what? Would be nice to see it.

Just wondering...

Thanks.

K

Maybe you'll be better of with MW2 or similar then :)

I play DM... I'm testing a 20 slot server for mainly DM/TDM. I doubt it will see much use, but it's there if anyone else likes DM.

I am trying to make some good DM missions (with and without ACE). Right now I prefer Celery's 3 beta maps, and I'm sure he'll make more.

I'd be happy to host other people's DM missions too (just DM, I got plenty of other crap).

I have just released my latest update to TDM and I have DM missions on the same designs coming out soon. As far as penalties [sBS]mac has provided a script where an invisible floating marker follows each player around. If you camp it will eventually catch up to you and mark your player after a warning so that the other team players can see your gametag. After you move away, the marker dissapears. There is also a server param where you can specify player lives.

Very good concept to keep a game moving. Our [uRC]PVP Survival (A&D/TDM/AAS) (non ace and no addons required) has around 3 utes and 3 chernarus DM missions I designed. I am working on about 2 others before a final release, but feel free to check them out. Just hop on the server and vote on the TDM or DM missions. If you see SURVIVAL missions (with the name SURVIVAL in the mission name) that is TDM with each player having 3 lives. It is a player and team elimination round. Fun when you have 10+ friends gaming.

I'd love to get some sessions going, no matter what server. TDM/DM is a favored gametype of mine. The missions have to be fun though. I'm all set with sniper DM games. I don't like using sniper weapons, lol.

U will find there are some servers out there Krout,, Mostly the CTF/TDM/AAS servers,

We usually play a few Dm's on our server at beginning of night to get some members on, then move to ctf's and some dm's to wind down at end of night.

Filter for SBS in server name. We are a Uk team so we play Between 7pm and 11pm b GMT busiest days are sun/tue and thurs.

Unless you use a very small map, DM/TDM game types simply don't work. Those gametypes pretty much require players to run into eachother on accident if they just walk around a bit, otherwise there will be absolutely no action (and the fact [sBS]mac needed to implement that marker feature to make the game actually play out a bit only proves my point). Since the default maps in this game are very big, it's natural for most missions to be made to work on those. To actually make a DM you will have to add some kind of magical walls and stuff to stop people from getting out, and besides, DM takes very little advantage of what this game has to offer. When people buy a realistic game they often expect at least some kind of realism in the gameplay, and DM is the furthest this game can go from realism (at least without massive modifications/scripting).

Just because a mission isn't a DM/TDM doesn't mean you have to travel for 30 minutes just to get killed and then start all over again. It's all up to the mission designer to make a good mission. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of those running around...

@JW, may I forward you other replies directed at me so you may answer them as well?

@Galzohar, as usual, you make very good points... but to some of us, DM is still a fun way to relax regardless of the limits of Arma 2 or the mission makers.

To each their own. Play what you want to play, how you want to play it, and enjoy your gaming time.

That's only one way to make a deathmatch. You can use a "soft" border that raises the player's fog level to make him see that it's better to stay inside the zone, and even no borders works just fine in a larger mission, afterall you won't be able to kill anyone if you wander off so it makes no sense to do so.

DM takes very little advantage of what this game has to offer.

Which features should DM missions take advantage of? In other words, how would you improve an all vs. all mission?

When people buy a realistic game they often expect at least some kind of realism in the gameplay, and DM is the furthest this game can go from realism (at least without massive modifications/scripting).

That only applies to people who expect every detail of the game and its playable content to be realistic, including various multiplayer game modes that obviously have abstract goals to make for stimulating gameplay. No game mode except for some respawnless and well-researched coop missions played with friends with military background is realistic.

The way I see it is that Arma 2 is Arma 2 (=realistic military game) regardless of the mission I play, only the objective is different. Your movement animations, combat mechanics and abilities stay the same regardless of game mode, so your copy of Arma 2 certainly doesn't transform into Unreal Tournament just because you have to kill other players.

Just because a mission isn't a DM/TDM doesn't mean you have to travel for 30 minutes just to get killed and then start all over again. It's all up to the mission designer to make a good mission. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of those running around...

You're right. However, the thing that appeals to people in DM is that it usually provides the most action with the least players on the server, which means instant action in its purest form, i.e. shooting and killing without restrictions or excuses.

I didn't say DM was bad or that making a good DM mission is impossible, I was just explaining the reasons that make it not-so-popular.

Also, just like you can make a realistic coop with no respawns, you can make a realistic attack/defend mission with no respawns. It just takes more effort to make it balanced while keeping the realism, and the scale will have to be different due to skill difference between humans and AI.
