Yoma 0 Posted December 18, 2009 It would be great if someone at BIS posted the "expected GPU memory" values for LOW NORMAL HIGH VERY HIGH DEFAULT I personally have lot's of CTD's with the value set to DEFAULT, but very little when set to HIGH on my GTX285 My goal would be to maybe try to detect the gpu memory and if the setting doesn't match your hardware, pop up some "one time" warning message for people that don't know it can cause crashes. Maybe this is not possible (could be that with different drivers/hardware you get different behaviour uncoupled to CTD's), but it's worth a try.
nuggetz 0 Posted December 19, 2009 I don't think you're going to get an answer from BIS. I usually leave mine at default. I have 768MB of GPU memory running SLI. I think I just recently set it to high. You would think BIS knows what these settings do but the community has been asking this question since A2 came out and I don't believe that BIS have answered this one. Maybe they're trying to remember :-)

BeerHunter 0 Posted December 19, 2009 There was a statement about what settings to use for what GPU memory but you're going to have to use the "Search" feature...I'm too lazy to find it for you.:p
McArcher 0 Posted December 19, 2009 I was interested in the same quaetion, but nobody answered me... What setting is better to be set up if I have 1024 MB video memory (HD4890) ?
Yoma 0 Posted December 19, 2009 Same here with my GTX285 except when setting it on high i don't get any CTD's They still happen under exceptional conditions (mods/multiplayer etc). No program is perfect ;) and it's not all in the control of BIS anyway.
Hud Dorph 22 Posted December 20, 2009 When the "default" was put into arma1 it was in patch 1.08 then the description from BIS was as follows: "New texture detail "Default" that autodetects the amount of VRAM. Recommended Texture Detail setting for users of cards with more than 512 VRAM." I also remember that default was what i used with my 8800gtx with 768mb vram. SWAT_BigBear 0 Posted December 20, 2009 I concour, the GTX285 1Gb ctd w/default more than very high, Using high is that much less of ctd's.

But all i'm asking is a reference VGAmemory -> ingame setting.
Misfit Leader 2 Posted December 22, 2009 Default is an ArmA 1 option, it as been developed for GeForce 8800 problem It is useless with ArmA II i think. I got 1Gb on my 5870 and choosed Very High. Got no CTD since i installed ArmA II.
KeyCat 131 Posted December 22, 2009 (edited) Default is an ArmA 1 option, it as been developed for GeForce 8800 problemIt is useless with ArmA II i think. The "Default" option is not useless for me, running fine here without CTD's on a nVidia GTX 260 896 MB VRAM on XP Pro with 191.07 WHQL. Been testing "High" and "Very High" options and while I seems to get somewhat higher FPS they work worse than "Default" for me with more object popups and texture lag on buildings etc. so I've always falled back to the "Default" option. /KC Edited December 22, 2009 by KeyCat

Yes of course if i add tons of AI and max all my video settings i eventually end up with a CTD, but i know my limitations :)

BeerHunter 0 Posted February 7, 2010 Have anyone got an answer to this yet? :) God you'd think that at least the guys that developed the program would have some idea of what their settings are supposed to mean wouldn't you? A definitive answer from SOMEONE would be nice.
PogMoThoin 10 Posted February 8, 2010 Default reads whats detected in the Arma2.cfg, so manually set it to default and change the config to the value fo the ram You got (make read only so it can't change back). I got a 4870x2, so I got 1GB vram (x2 has 1GB each card, not 2GB) and use localVRAM=1073741824; (as its in bytes)
EDcase 87 Posted February 8, 2010 I used DEFAULT in ARMA1 with 8800GTX(768mb) and it worked well. BUT if I use DEFAULT in ARMA2 with GTX285(1GB) I get lower FPS and after a few mins graphics get corrupt and start flashing white. So I just use VERY HIGH or just HIGH and works fine.
