Damaged chopper flight model

Recommended Posts

Ok I just did a little bit of 0 tail rotor tests. I've found a dozen different ways to land as if nothing happened.

However I still can't autorotate, how the hell do you do that?!

This is more typically what happens.............they were lucky they were low speed and low............

Like I said above, its not impossible, but 99% its catastrophic and every situation has a different circumstance.......

I must say, without experience, my assumption of a real life tail rotor failure, at low speeds:

First, you loose control of the helicopters rotation. Because there is no force to counter the rotation of the main blades, the body of the helicopter is now starting to rotate in the opposite direction as the blades. Now the G-forces are starting to build up big time, controlling the helicopter and countering the force is going to be one shitty experience.

Now we have this whole new issue that both the body and the main rotors are spinning. This means the overall lift the chopper can produce has been dramatically diminished. At least from what I have seen, no tail rotor, no lift. Your going down, and pretty fast too.

So now, your blood is getting sucked away from your head. You are spinning uncontrollably. The door gunners are held on only by their harnesses, and you are rapidly losing altitude. Not a good day!

Just my completely random guess, chances are I am totally wrong :p

No argument from me in that point.

Although I was talking more along the lines of tail rotor failure (as in the game) and not catistrophic tail section loss.

See the vid I posted - yes, sometimes.

But failures come in many shapes, as do all the circustances like speed, height, weight, etc etc, and of course design of chopper in hand, what kills one chopper might be saved in another, the 2 contrasting vids we posted prove that of course.......the Puma went insta spin vs the nice controlled relatively safe landing in Thirdup's vid.....

No argument from me in that point.

Although I was talking more along the lines of tail rotor failure (as in the game) and not catistrophic tail section loss.

For sure mate, I think we went both slightly down a differnt tangent in a missunderstanding to be honest.........I was actually more refering to rotor coming off or blades departing etc......but same meat different gravy eh ;)

I am reasonably happy with the experience the game gives all things considering, given that it is not Black Shark after all ?? :D

So how do you autorotate in ArmA 2?

I was heading West through Dolina's valley @ about 100 km/h and I lost my main engine, I turned to land on the hill to the north and went into the trees directly beneath me.

Well, I'm the *last* person you want to ask about successful auto rotation but there are a few clips out there with some pointers.

So is it unrealistic that I can survive an autorotation landing by hovering at 1000m and just holding down Z as I drift vertically to the ground? Or in real life would that get me caught up my own air and dropping like a stone?

ArmaII is not a reference Helicopter Sim, it has never intended to be and has never been promoted as such.......it provides helicopter thrills with a hint of realism, go and play DCS Black Shark if you want the full effect :D

I enjoy DCS and I enjoy ArmaII and I also enjoy GTA IV's helicopters, all for different reasons, if you don't let your expectations get the better of you and enjoy what your playing within the known constraints there should will be no complaint ?? :)

I don't know much about helicopters and I'm not looking for a flight sim. I just wonder what is realistic and what isn't.

No it is not entirely realistic, for lots of boring in depth technical reasons :D

But honestly, don't worry yourself about it too much, especially if your not looking for the "ultimate" sim experience.

Its a decent honest ride with enough realism to be pleasing.

but sorry

Thats a kick ass setup mate :D

I thought I was lucky running a 37inch 1080p and trackIR :D

Very nice..........keep thinking about going tripple screen.

I think I will be spending about £10,000 overall LOL.

wouldn't the body rotate in the opposite direction of the blades? equal and opposite force physics thing coming into it

cant argue with what you've said tho seems like what would happen.

I cant wait to have a crack at it.

In all honesty I totally thought it would be opposite direction too, but as I have no idea about it, I just wrote any old blabber :P

I really didn't know that weathervaning was able to overcome the main rotor torque and you actually was supposed to be able to glide a chopper with a failed tail rotor in to land. I always thought it to be one of Armas many quirks.

You learn something new everyday with this game :)

By the way, the tip earlier about gunning the throttle just before you reach the ground in an autorotation glide does prevent damage to the fuselage and rotor. If you were out of fuel, you can refill and take off again.

You dont have to shut down engine for that, just dont apply torque...means set throttle to neutral. The more power you apply the more torque is to counter...I noticed that Helicopters flown with just 75% power are more agile around the yaw axis compared to those flown with 100%.

The Flight modelling in ArmA 2 is beginning to get really good.

Last beta patch did change a few things regarding Aircraft, check it out.
