Really Disappointed :(

Recommended Posts

I got this on steam today. I'm getting ready to deploy and was going to buy this on sale or not before I left. I'm a huge realism fps fan, and when I finally purchased and installed this I was quite gitty in anticipation. I didn't get my hopes up too much, but when I started playing I really felt let down.

I don't really know what I'm doing in the game, there's never any more than 15 people playing a pvp based scenario. I've played for almost 3 hours now and have never seen an enemy (although I know they're out there). When I ask team mates for help, they ignore me. There's crickets in the background when it comes to any communication. Everything's just.. dead.

This is a great game, something I would love to get into. Unfortunately, the anti-social feeling I get from people in the game, the lack of team work on top of lots of confusion just sucks all the fun out of it for me :(

Come on guys, lets be a little more proactive. Team work and communication won't kill you.

Hi bug - for now I would say check out the AAS (Advance & Secure) missions out there. I can relate when you say you have no idea what you're doing. It takes a little time getting used to, but can be a nightmare if you don't know where to start.

In regard to Player vs Player games....

I have been working with a very good mission scriptor and we are in beta testing for something of worth in ARMA 2. Once completed you should hopefully see more smaller scaled, simpler objective based missions. I'm nost sure what your taste is in gametypes, but I am working with a scripter to get his PVP scripts tested and at a new release for designers. I'm not saying more PVP servers will host them, but you may see more hosting them regularly. Gametypes like:

DM32 32 player Deathmatch

32 player deathmatch where if you decide to sit and camp your player is tagged for others to see your name above your head until you move. This mission has a leaderboard so all can see the leader on screen. It has more features than that, but very easy to understand and play

TDM16 16 player Team Death Match

Like Deathmatch only it is 8 vs 8 and teams spawn at each end of the map and have to fight each other. The team with the most points wins. Spawn points are spread out and random at each each to reduce spawn camping efforts. I may work on 32 player versions, but that isn't in my to do list atm.

HOLD16 16 player Team King Of The Hill

Basically these are infantry based small scaled where each team fights to control 1 small zone. Points acrue each second a player is in the zone. The team with the most points at the end of the round wins.

HOLD32 32 player Team King Of The Hill

Like the 16 player version only a bit bigger with vehicles and drop zones. At the home spawn you can go to a C130 carrier plane then choose a drop point on the map to spawn to. You are then parachuted to that location. These are used for bases at midpoint between home spawn and the ZONE being fought for and usually contail armor like tanks and stuff :-)

A&D16 16 player Attack & Defend Team Siege

No respawns and 1 side has to capture a zone while the other side defends it. It only takes 5 seconds once you get in the zone to capture it so the defending side has to keep a close eye on it as well as their surroundings. This is very much like Ghost Recon's version and when you die you can view the game through the eyes of your alive players.

I could go on, but I do want to let you know this has been a long thought out process for many and when it is completed (I am hoping in the next week or 2) I'll look to setup an event so that folks can really see the potential of good mission designs and true player vs player gaming. I have a PVP pack which is at version 1.02 - when I come out with an update to that (v1.03) I think many will see the fun involved with shorter, simpler, playable missions.

Hope you stick around to taste some of these, but if not I understand - the game can be frustrating especially in the USA when some of us folks like to relax and game only to find no one hosting good PVP missions that are simple to learn and understand. There are some hosting decent missions, but they are hard to find. Keep looking for now - have a great weekend.

Tried the always full 100 player server? Should be more players at least... Higher chance to find someone.

Otherwise, I would recommend coop. Doesnt split the team in half and you can actually find players that have the time to talk. Hell one round I even found a buddy to team up with (well, he teamed up with me, I didnt even consider it at the time). All it took was a "lets team up, follow me". Few - if any - come up with that wierd suggestion on a public server :p

PvP sometimes has a tendancy to become TOO competetive.

PVP Servers are scarce. But... the two servers below i find are allways active.

During the day (eastern time) 100 man berzerk -hold- server.

Nightime (eastern time) the BMF - hold - server usually starts to fill around 9pm (a few nights a week it may be dead though). This server has a great crowd of regulars. And will help with any questions you may have.

Before you go online you should learn the controls and go through SP boot camp. Asking questions that you would learn there will go unanswered.

On the "hold" servers the the colored circles represent the combat zones (except the two home base zones those are off limits). On the BMF maps you will find (weapon selection) ammo crates next to each "flag". You can save you weapon preference by using your "mouse scroll wheel" on the ammo crate and selecting "save loadout".

BMF maps: goal - capture each flag in order, the action will be at the most forward postion.

Berzerk: goal - hold the zones, action is everywhere allthough a certain zone usually pops up as the most contested over.

Totally the experience that our entire community found, so we started up our own server. I think there is a large long term following of hardcore players who know the game inside out and are not willing to take the time to help new players to the community. We're trying to make ARMA 2 more accessible and it seems to be working, we have a public ventrilo server that we advertise in game, we use Warfare BE which is pretty easy to get to grips with, our server messages are full of game tips, we answer questions and hand hold new players. I know there are other communities out there like ours too, it's just a matter of working through them until you find one ;)

We do get players that join, say something obscure about how we're not supposed to do x,y or z but ho hum!

I agree, but it is very hard. Many, including myself, have this phsychological (?) barrier when it comes to trying to give orders to strangers. I have no problems leading guys I know (they might object to that though :D).

Whenever I find a server without any form of leadership (almost all), I tend to watch for a little, then hang tight to a guy that appears to share my style of playing (slow and careful). Move tight, and make sure he sees you covering sectors he is not. He will think you are a teamplayer, and might even start acting a little as a leader if you're lucky.

Or simply stick with whoever is your teamleader, and try to get others in your team to do the same. You don't have to give a lot of orders or communicate like professionals. As long as you manage to stay together, it enhances the feeling of teamplay tenfold - at least.

Bug, you just need to find the right people bro, not everyone is as dedicated to teamwork as you would like them to be, there are a lot of clans out there that are just GREAT with teamwork, to be honest I don't play the mainstream game modes that you seem so much of like Domination, I would much rather the custom missions that pop up every now and again.

I remember I was playing a Vietnam based mission where we had to take out outposts and then finally plan an assault on an Viet Kong HQ, this wasn't a clan match, this was actually a pub server that just caught my eye, and the teamwork was fantastic, we were basically a 5 man squad of a force recon team and if we tried to go off and do our own thing we would have been slaughtered, plus there was a revive script in that server so we HAD to stick together if we didn't want to be lying down in a field on our own because we didn't wanna work in a team.

tl;dr

Go for the servers with not so many people in them (preferably custom missions), you are forced to work as a team if you want to actually get anywhere.
