THEBLITZ6794 10 Posted September 13, 2009 ok, the ai isnt as retarded as people claim. the problem is that the campaign focuses on a recon team which includes steath and split second decisions/reactions which bring out the worst in the ai. however, on a platoon level and even squad level its quite smart. make 4 squads of marines vs 8 squads of russians (equal). some men will fire wildly while others bound foreward. im playing a defense custom mission and the ai has found a weak point and is exploiting. it recognizes the high ground and its not behaving like it would if it were scripted. it breaks through in 1 area and exploits it. the engine was made for OFP which was massive battles in open fields. keep that in mind too. jw custom 56 Posted September 13, 2009 Pretty retarded when friendly AI walks infront of my SMAW the same second i fire... this has happened several times and have made me SCREAM and shutdown my computer :p
Flash Thunder 10 Posted September 13, 2009 I think the biggest problem with the AI is just the pathfinding. Other than that like you said the AI is very good even without scripting, people usually jump to radical conclusions when they first see the AI in Arma. Try on Veteran they rival Human ability sometimes its amazing. Great work BIS just fix the pathfinding and tweak some settings here and there.
THEBLITZ6794 10 Posted September 13, 2009 the problem is that ai cant predict. despite that it sees u having a small out and having it aimed and stuff, it cant possibly know that ur gonna fire it. ai=computer=robot=cant think. only programmed. ---------- Post added at 06:09 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:08 AM ---------- basically, the ai is good but it doesnt have very good common sense because common sense is instincts which cant be programmed (though with good programming they can seem to exist, but they dont). AI works fine when asked to just plain assault a position, especially when outnumbering enemy. It was fine in OFP and it's fine in ArmA2. Problems arise in many other situations, such as when AI is asked to hold a position or to do stealthy missions, for example. Other major issues exist with pathfinding, detection/spotting capabilities, shooting precision (meaningless skill values) ...
Herbal Influence 10 Posted September 13, 2009 Don't forget, guys, AIs are only human .... ;-) In earnest: Most "errors" I see with them are also to happen in real life. And it may often end tragic. But that's reality. People are dumb, irated & irritated, nervous... I love them for they have that certain human touch ... ;-)
wamingo 1 Posted September 13, 2009 Pretty retarded when friendly AI walks infront of my SMAW the same second i fire... this has happened several times and have made me SCREAM and shutdown my computer :p And players never run into the line of fire, no no never. ;)
NeMeSiS 11 Posted September 13, 2009 And players never run into the line of fire, no no never. ;) No, they get shot in the back by dumb AI's. ;)
mils 10 Posted September 13, 2009 this statement is correct if you install solas' slx_mod which tells ai hey your being shot at find some cover. (on the far side of the dude shooting at you) my biggest issue with arma 2 is enemy awareness, sometimes they are awesome other times your sniping at them and they don't react at all :( /sigh
Kupla 10 Posted September 13, 2009 IMO, the biggest problems with the AI are the "only shoot to kill" -logic and ordering the AI to target/engage an enemy, especially a vehicle. They never seem to make any good decisions when engaging a vehicle (Why won't they use their AT weapons properly?!). Then there's also problems with some waypoints like "HOLD" in the editor... jw custom 56 Posted September 13, 2009 And players never run into the line of fire, no no never. ;) Lol when i'm standing still aiming at a vehicle then they have to step right infront of my SMAW.... well i've never tried that with other humans in mp and i myself have never moved infront of a AT man aiming. I'm not talking about being in the line of fire but they go in aim like 0.5m infront of the SMAW(boom) ;)
galzohar 31 Posted September 14, 2009 Those are all "little" problems. The biggest problem with the AI is its detection, as shown in my videos ( and ). The second biggest problem is the decisions it makes on where to go and who/what to shoot.
Blake 0 Posted September 14, 2009 I have no problems getting killed by the AI. And that's not just because they'd be that accurate...
