Fn minimi or m-249 saw

Recommended Posts

Everyone seem to want the SAW or FN Minimi as it's called, in OFP.

Well, I've been working on one for my UNPROFOR campaign and all it really needs is some tweaking and ofcourse a custom model (at the moment it's represented by the PK).

I'm considering to release it seperately, but it still needs a couple of tweaks, for which I could use a little help, if the addon is to be completely realistic.

Does anyone have a good recording of it's firing sound?

(I remember in Project IGI it had this cool *FLAP-FLAP-FLAP* sound, but don't know if that's realistic)

Does anyone have a picture or drawing showing how the ironsight looks, when looking through it?

Cheers,

Gimbal

aight, that sound for IGI should b correct, cause a SAW is ment to b quieter than a normal gun, and is said to have *Flap* like sound..... so that sound should work, i think. im still looking for a pick of the sights, but i cant find any.... im looking for a good pick of the gun from a certain angle which might give u an idea of what it looks like....

This pic doesn't show the iron sight from looking through it but it pretty much shows it all from the front which may be of use.............

From the pic above the HK iron sight would be fairly similar, if you didn't want to create a whole new sight. wink.gif

Gimbal, I could kiss you! tounge.gif

One thing that the vids and the pics don't show is the 200 round ammo box for the SAW. If you are going to model it, don't colour the box green. Green box = blank rounds, Black box = live rounds.

The SAW can also accept 30 round M-16 magazines IRL.

Hope This Helps

For the history of the Minimi go here.

The pics above are of the modern American M-249 SAW. The original factory version looks different. In the early years of American usage, the SAW looked like the factory version. So in 85' it looked like this:

Good luck Gimbal!

WOW!

Thanks alot guys, this stuff is really helpful! I'll try and make this bugger as close to real life as possible!

Regarding the ammo count... as far as I know, only the belt feed has 200 rounds, while the box ammo only holds 100 rounds - isn't that true? Right now I've given it 100, but if the box can actually hold 200...

The box is definitely 200 rounds... check out this page. (Has lots of good info on the M249).

Ammunition is fed into the weapon from a 200-round ammunition box holding a disintegrating metallic split-link belt. The SAW also has an alternating feeding method using 20- and 30-round M16 rifle magazines. <span id='postcolor'>

The IGI guys recorded the sounds for all their weapons from the real things at target ranges...the 'flapping' is accurate.

It's been changed to 200 wink.gif

Good, as it also makes the weapon more unique. Besides, I've also made it able to use M16 mags from dead soldiers biggrin.gif

fas.org says a standard mg'ers loadout would be 3 boxes of ammo, giving 600 rounds. OFP's M60 MG'er has 5x100 rounds,

so I'm wondering if it would be more balanced to only give the Minimi soldier 3 boxes as default (like real life), even though he has slots for 5. I think this would be more balanced too... he'd still have 100 rounds more than the standard MG'er and could always look for ammo boxes.

What's the general oppinion on power-play? tounge.gif

Another thing: It would be easy to make the short barrel version too, based on the standard. A shorter barrel and stock. It's disadvantage would be less accurate fire, while it's advantage could be the ability to carry a LAW on the back at the same time... how does that sound?

Make an Assault version, with the "Patented C-Mag Advantage!"

Yeah! Your Idea, Short Barrel, Folding stock, and C-Mag! Less accuracy but Minimi, Law, and a couple of grenades to fill in the Magazine void.

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">It says 1000 rpm (cyclic), while fas.org says 725 rpm.<span id='postcolor'>

I have used the weapon myself (C9) and would agree with FAS.

The cyclic rate depends on the setting of the gas regulator. (it is located at the front, directly under the barrel) The regulator has only two settings, 'normal' and 'adverse'. As the gas tube becomes clogged with carbon, the rate of fire begins to slow down. The operator would then flip the gas regulator from 'normal' to 'adverse' which would allow more gas into the gas tube to allow the cyclic rate to speed up again. So the rate of fire can vary from 750 RPM to 950 RPM.

When someone gets issued a C9 in Canada they usually get: 1 C9 (M-249 SAW), 1 cleaning/spareparts kit, and 1 spare barrel. The ammo gets issued in the field, I usually get 3-4 200 round boxes of 5.56mm NATO - linked.

The 200 round boxes come from the factory in an olive green bag with a strap on it, so in theory you could carry a bunch of boxes but that would wiegh you down. I usually have 1 box on the gun, 1 in my webbing, and 1 in the bag it came in-over my shoulder. Riflemen in the section also can carry 1 box on them for when I need it.

Does that answer your question Gimbal?
