Tajin 349 Posted July 6, 2009 Hi, I thought I'd just post some screenshots of this infraredview and see what you guys think about it or if any genius out there has ideas on how to improve it. As with the other flir-scripts there is the problem of how to best display the actual heat-sources. Well anyway, just have a look at these screenshots (click them for fullview): heattrail of a cobra flying past some burning vehicles thirdperson view and some soldiers nearby
Master gamawa 0 Posted July 6, 2009 That's great! Is it yours? You made it? Does it work in game? What are you waiting for? RELEASE IT!
Dan86 10 Posted July 6, 2009 Damn this looks nicee, it is very hard to tune heat sources/cold areas etc. using in game FLIR (ppeffects tuning) to match real IRView but i see you did a mile step forward. The cobra heat trail tells me you are very close, to make a good stuff for a2. Keep up good work!
Tajin 349 Posted July 6, 2009 Problem is it only works on short distance so far, atleast for soldiers. I'm putting small negative lightsources over the head of soldiers nearby to make them "hot" but the amount of lights arma2 can handle is very limited especially if there are other lights nearby. I think lightpoints are not the best solutions (becomes laggy) but is a good way to simulate heatview in cutscenes or small mission. In my opinion its nit good for an addon. Mondkalb and me have had another idea, how to realize heatview: It looks that in ArmA2 you can replace textures "on the fly". In a lot of configs are 2 or more "looks" for a unit.... now here is the idea: We make a replacementconfig for all normal vehicles and units with an extra textureselection. This texture is a map of the heat of the unit (a car is blue exept windows and engine). If you switch to the heatview, all textures get replaced (together with some postpossesing effects). This is just an idea and the system is not tested yet... by the way this is a lot of work for the additional textures, but it could be possible i think. Tajin 349 Posted July 23, 2009 From what i know Infrared vision is short range.. Yeah but I mean really short. ;) I'm trying to make it with particles instead of lightsources, but its not on the top of my ToDo list right now. I know about the replaced-textures approach but I don't want to do it that way, I want this to work without using addons. Replacing textures would also be problematic if you want to use it together with 3rd party addons.

I need to get home (currently on holiday) to dive into this scripting business.
Tajin 349 Posted July 27, 2009 , how low is it on the list, mate? Hmm I'm not sure. I'm currently working on an MP gamemode-template, that one is pretty much done though. And theres still that realistic-towing script I'm trying to make but that is currently stuck because of an bug in the setVelocity command. -_- Hmmm ah right and sometimes I want to actually play the game. :D Worry not, it's still on the list nevertheless. ^^

jackass888 0 Posted August 15, 2009 hi Just wanted to let you know of something in noticed and maybe it helps. Steetlights/car headlights can be seen from distances of 1km+ and they seem to light up the environment when looking from several hundred meters away. Maybe something special in their config can also be used on these "heat lights".
pAuthority 10 Posted February 11, 2010 From what i know Infrared vision is short range.. Not really. I've seen people over a kilometer away on a hillside and even jet engines of a passenger plane, which had to be VERY far away. This was a handheld binocular-style infrared camera. Well, it was somewhat cold winter (~ -20 degrees celsius), that might have helped a little. It was fun to see even car tracks in the snow were warmer than pure snow. I don't think that would be possible in ArmA 2 :j:
