Buildings too cpu intensive?

Recommended Posts

What I don't get is why Buildings are sooo hard on the CPU compared to Arma1, it's ridiculous. I am going around the country side at about 45-55 fps, then get to a city or town and my fps drops to between 18-24 fps (with all textures fully loaded). And then with spikes that drop it to 10 fps or lower when its trying to stream textures.

I can tell quite clearly that it is the CPU that is taking a beating thanks to my SLI indicators dropping way down any time I get near buildings, showing clear evidence of severe cpu bottle necking. Maybe this why they seem to have put a cap on FPS (mp and campaign), so we don't notice the wild variations of fps between towns and countryside as much?

Buildings seem to hit the CPU harder than even a battalion of AI infantry. What gives? Is it the new damage model for them? Because if it is, I could gladly live without it. The few partially destroyed buildings I have investigated so far do look very nice, but seem to be rather buggy with invisible debris inside and around the outside of the buildings that you can walk on.

Well what are your thoughts? I'm just trying to narrow down what the biggest FPS killer is.

What sort of FPS do you get in armoury/editor?

Try this - SLi patch did nothing for me, but this illogical sequence of steps has given the best results out of almost 2 weeks worth of attempts.

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=77515

in MP my FPS have improved considerably, but still lots of AI kill performance on high end cpu...

some people are saying their cpu is untroubled despite low fps. its all a mystery.

personally I think it's the textures. I can get 30-40fps in the woods with fairly heavy AI and ~60 on a clean map; but I go in a city with no AI in the editor and I get ~20fps. And if I'm in a vehicle driving thru a town my HDD is thrashing constantly and I get pauses and lag.

I'm pretty much just staying out of big towns unless they release a patch that optimizes them better

All I know is the game works the hell out of my Q6600 @ 2.7 ghz. My logitech g15 displays CPU and RAM usage, and the CPU goes up to as much as 90% use, which means all 4 cores are being stressed to almost max. Before only prime 95 and world in conflict could do this. Performance seems all over the board, in the earlier SP missions and in the armory, my frames are smooth, never dropping below 29, average i'm guessing 43. Haven't tried multiplayer yet or editor. Also i'm running all recommended tweaks. Everything passed the 3rd SP mission results in almost unplayable frames, 12-38 (38 when looking up at the sky or down at the ground).

system:

Win 7 64/Win XP 32 (seperate drives, currently running Win 7 64)

Q6600 @ 2.7 ghz

P6n Diamond nForce 680i SLI

GTX 295

6 GB DDR2 800 (Arma 2 only uses 38% max due to it being a 32 bit .exe, hopefully a 64 bit executable will be added so arma2 can use more RAM, it definetly needs it).

Personally I think future patches/drivers will ease our woes. Also, I wanted to overclock my Q6600 to 3.2-3.4 GHZ, however I seem to be experiencing a lock after 1199 FSB/2.7 ghz, so I'm not sure if i'll be able to on stock cooling, which sucks since after doing some testing and reverting to stock settings on my cpu, arma 2 lost 5-9 FPS, so overclocking the CPU presented huge gains at least for me.

arma2cpu.th.jpg

this is startup and a bit of the amphibious assault mission. both cores busy. the report stated that arma2 was "cpu intensive", lol no shit.

I have the same impression and i too think its because of the building destruction.. thing.

I've been destroying buildings with a couple smoke grandes, talk about strong throw :D .

And while the buildings are generally more detailed than the Sahrani ones the towns are small compared to Paraiso, Ortego or Corazol.

I have a E8500 cpu and my G15 keyboard display says it running between 90 and 100% alot of the time.It is often maxed out at 100%.

Is it ok to play the game like this?

Say I play for 1 hour and 60% of that time is spent with the cpu at 100%

Surely something is wrong there?

Move over Prime95 and Intel Burn test. The new cpu stressing program is Arma2!

sorry to bump this old thread up but ive been having the same problem for quite a long time, and dont know how to sort it out. the fps drops to the range of 14-24 when im in chernogorsk even when loading up the editor, driving around in town in a humvee alone.

the cpu usage is 70% on average, which is an amd PII x3 720 @ 3.3Ghz

i'd like to know if a further overclock would improve my situation. thank you

the rest of my spec: 2Gb DD2 800 ram,4870 512mb,winxp 32bit,with game version and drivers up to date.

For me, overclocking my Intel c2q9300 from stock 2.5 to 3.2 made bugger all difference to Arma2, everything else gets a noticeable improvement: 3000 point increase in 3Dmark 06 for example. Anything is worth a shot though, so if you can OC more then give it a go.
