1.02 , 3D sound is still Borked :-(

Recommended Posts

I take it Iam not alone in using a 5.1 sound system , I will say it again 5.1 sound

Are you getting sound levels still screwed up ?

Example a vech is 300 meters ahead of you on your 12 oclock but the sound is coming from behind you from 1 inch away ?

I found this in the "name.ArmA2Profile" in mydocuments :

soundEnableEAX=1;

soundEnableHW=0;

does anyone know if HW one has any effect? I tried it but didn't notice any difference. XFI Extreme Music here. should we just leave it at 0?

Change it to 1 and see what happens. Did it to mine on 1.01 Beta and I couln't tell the difference. Maybe this is another feature to be enabled in a patch.

Sound is borked on my PC, whether I have it set to 5.1 through speakers, or stereo through headphones. The volume and direction that sounds are heard can in no way be used as a directional or distance indicator.

I have an x-fi card, diveplane.

I think this is just another feature of the OFP world that persists through every iteration of the game. :)

An idea is that you may have set it up wrong? try to connect the speakers differently and run the speaker calibration tool that came with the audiocard.

Just a suggestion, have no idea if it works.

As regards Xfi people, I had issues too.

I set the setting already mentioned above, then go into your control panel for Xfi and tick/switch on "Enable EAX effects" & also switch on "Enable X-fi CMSS-3D Virtual".

Once I did this the sound is balanced more and spaced around me correctly, and distance of sound is correct, plus distortion isn't as much. Cure distortion by putting volumes to less than 50 percent and upping your speakers manually.

If you dont have these features then =0 both items listed in the earlier post and see how that works.

PS 1.02 patch.

Basically if you don't have EAX support or 3d support for on-board card having it enabled will mess with levels which the card cant replicate. Although BIS should really have these 2 things added to the sound menu like Arma1.

switch on "Enable X-fi CMSS-3D Virtual".

I wouldn't recommend doing this. With CMSS enabled all you're doing is taking the only playing channels (left/right) and mixing them into 5.1

It's not the same thing at all.

You still aren't getting the proper sound, it's more of a placebo effect because you can hear something from every speaker.

Playing the demo and I have no directional or distance indication at all.

I have an x-fi and I use headphones and CMSS3D. In arma and all other games I have a good directional sound, not only arround me but also up and down because of CMSS3D. I think it works great for me, except in arma2. Im really lost as I have no sense where enemies are shooting and if they are shooting close to me..

it think this needs to be resolved with Creative Labs to support ARMA 2 or xAudio2 titles within CMSS3D (i like it too but only when it works)

I though OpenAL would make it easier for both parties to avoid special patches for games.. Then again I havent really read up on OpenAL.

Asus Xonar d2x with digital out to a Yammy reciever with 5.1 and have no problems with surround sound. All channels pump it out based on sound location.

Vista 64 as well.

Have myself the Razer Baracuda 5.1 system (Headset+card) I do get the correct directional sound but it doesn't seem to be quite up to the same standard as some games audio.

Always had a bit of a problem with the cards default 'extra perception' of sound, thus if I don't turn down the field of capture i'm able to hear sound from further away than I should.

Good for hearing someone sneaking up on you, but plays a bit of havoc when there are masses of sounds going on around you.

+one on the over driven audio regardless of distance. Distorted speach, clipping.

I tried both with my X-fi Fatal1ty gamer and Live 24. Windows XP 64bit, 9600GTx2 SLI, 2,8Ghz core 2 duo, Asus p5n32SLI.

The only thing that helps is to put hardware acceleration to minimum, but then on both cards the rear channels die totally.

Now here is an interesting test I just did: Instead of using my 5.1 connector (3x rca jacks) to my logitech speakers, I hooked the car up in digital mode to my Sony amp via SPDIF.... guess what : same distortion, and the helicopter is just in front of me sound while it is on the other end of the map.

Perfect test: Single player -> Campaign -> Harvest Red -> Start .... totally messed up sound clipping from rear speakers....

Please Bohemia give us a fix, this is really-really messed up right now and many people seem to have the same issue when enabling 5.1 sound

Didn't notice if it was mentioned, but if you are using Realtek/AC97 then I'd suggest disabling HWSound in the Config file if not already (set value to 0), may help.

As for the Creative Cards, I must have tweaked something well because on my X-Fi ExtremeGamer card it works perfectly with CMSS-3D enabled (sound location is perfect), that said, if I enable the Crystalizer I get the same problem people are talking about here.

As an offnote, if using 2.1 I get issues with the CMSS-3D, but that happens in all games, which is funny that a process to simulate surround sound only works well with surround sound

At the office now (on Apple computers and no games), but I give a try to the CMSS.... the problem with that solution IMO is that it is not real surround as far as I know, Instead it is a simulated 3d sound decoded from stereo channels. Something like surround encoded in stereo (Pro logic like), that could also work, but it is less than an actual 5.1......

Exactly. CMSS is meant to simulate 3D sound on the drivers. This means in 2 speaker setup it tricks you into hearing audio around you (doesn't work very well, but kinda works in some games), the good part about it is that with 5.1 it works to simulate 7.1+

Unfortunately in Arma it has conflicts in most cases and ends up scrambling the positional audio so everything sounds like it's closer than it is.

1. there is no OpenAL in ARMA 2, it uses MS xAudio 2 (CPU only, no hw acceleration)

2. there are new drivers from CREATIVE LABS for X-fi serie from 26.6.2009 for all OSes

Doesn't help Arma2 in Headphones mode at all.

No occlusion, no doppler effect, all sounds are full bore with absolutely no directional indication.

Sucks to be hearing a Tank 2 miles away at full bore in your ears, or choppers flying overhead, birds chirping etc...

The latest driver for X-fi was installed 2 days ago via creative software autoupdate.

Can you please send me your driver version to see if that helps?

You are running 5.1 mode (real, not 3d cmss/whatever) with X-fi and you do not have the sound issue?

Please confirm

Thanks

Well, it is working. I do not know how in the hell it is possible, but even after installing the X-fi driver, control panel was showing a driver from 2007 :O so I re-ran the installer from the Creative Autoupdater, then rebooted, set the acceleration to full, then enabled 5.1 audio. Sounds are perfect this time.

I think I messed up the drivers before the actual patch somehow trying everything possible to fix the problem. The fatal step might have been uninstalling the xfi drivers and puttin an other card in, that is how I ended up with the OD MS driver from 2007....

Well, either way this is perfect now so sorry for blaming the developers...

It would be nice to see what driver version is required for a certain game, as I told the card was working perfectly for all the other games...

OK ... here is an update .... today I tried to play. The sound is bad again. The driver is the one that worked, absolutely no changes on my Windows box (no install, no remove, no new software) ... actually the box is reserved for games as I work on Macs ...

So sound issue is back and I cannot fix it..... please anyone PM me if you have any ideas about how to fix this :(
