the models and stuff are top notch though, and the ai are fantastic.

you better edit the pic. the filesize must not exceed 100kb. or else placebo will have your backside

that definatly is not what it looks like on Very High for me...somthing must be wrong with your video card or drivers.

yeah your telling me, when i loaded up the game i didnt believe my eyes after seeing everyone elses screenies. the funny thing is some things (like the models and stuff), look amazing, but other things like the vegetation are terrible. i have an 8800gt and an e6750 duo clocked at 3.4ghz so idk :/. i even did the mark2 benchmark thing and scored 3800 lol.

anyway sorry for hijacking the thread, i know its not how the game usually is so im sure BI have done a great job, the AI can actually beat me in CQB now which is awesome :).

im using a lcd so im on the max res (1280x1024). 200% fillrate makes all the objects look really sharp (and lags me a fair bit), but the textures still look like crap so it doesnt fix it.

One post in and we're already off topic? Hehe.

Anyways, I've only seen videos, but it looks like the lighting is much better than the first Arma, (still no dynamic shadows and bump mapping for most lights though). The smoke also looks improved.

I don't believe you when you say the settings are all "very high". The shadow of the orange trees in this screenshot is a dead giveaway:

Shadows are on normal.

The low res textures are either due to low texture detail or lack of AF - maybe both.

Back on topic...

For me, the infantry AI stands out as the biggest improvement. I can actually enjoy urban combat now, it's awesome. The way the stick to buildings and move through the town is much better than before.

There are loads of small subtle improvements that I have yet to see people give much credit for. The bullet casings fly through the air more realistically, the grass gets flattened by people going prone and by vehicles - and stays flat, helicopter rotors slowly bend upwards as the chopper starts up, hand signals, the awesome new vehicle sounds, the features of the sound engine (sounds have more bass the further away they are)...

So many subtle improvements that many wont even notice.

Noticed improvements to ArmA:

1. Sound

Gunshots & echo, walking, breathing, talking - everything sounds to much more realistic. No need to rush for a quick soundmod to make things better, they already are. Great work, whoever is in the Sound team at BIS.

2. Mission gameplay

You get orders what to do but not how to do it. You're left in open terrain, with lots of support units and lots of dynamic things going on. You need a plan, you need to pay attention to your surroundings, you need to adapt when something happens. You're not following a strict 'path' the mission maker has thought out for you, you're writing your own mission while playing. Emergent gameplay at its best.

i don't why you think i would be trying to fake this, but i'm not. trust me i've been looking forward to arma2 for ages and i thought anyone who complained about it were nufties until now :P. more screenshots with my settings displayed as well... (oh and im aware postprocessing is on low, but i really dont think that is the problem :P):

Strange. Maybe have a look at the texture filtering settings in your graphics card drivers. Set it to "Quality" or even try "High Quality".

Hard to tell exactly what it looks like because your screenshots have heavy JPEG compression though.

This probably belongs in another thread though...

Just to be on topic, yet another cool improvement...

Terrain lighting at night. Much better, no more 'blockyness' :)

Didnt BIS say also if you add video memory etc too high and your videocard really cant support it - it will load lower textures and thus will look bad combined also with bader performance. Setting ARMA up with my earlier experiences can take some time to get it perfect if you dont have the latest most powerful VCard where you can just set all to very high - jump in and have the time of your life.

i set them all on very high to prove a point, i usually play with the video memory set to "default", and theres no difference in graphical appearance. something that is interesting is that setting the resolution on 640x480 doesnt look much different than 1280x1024, although the ui gets huge. in fact, it pretty much all looks the same unless i have 200% fillrate, in which case some of the jagged edges go away. the textures look the same no matter what i do with the settings :(.

Hav u tried setting the memory to low? And maybe restarting the game?

is an 8800gt a low end card now? is 512mb not enough texture memory for arma2? it would explain why the textures look so bad no matter what i put them on...

The lil' something I noticed and REALLY think is cool is ricocheting bullets. Both the tracers at dusk and to actually see the wall or object behind getting struck by those ricochets (like a plaster wall). Very nice touch.

OK I did a little test and I post the results.

My specs:

Intel Core2 Duo E8400 3.0 GHz (stock speed)

Ati HD4850 512MB, 9.6 Catalyst driver

2GB RAM

Some of the trees and bushes look like water paintings others are blocky.

If you have same or better rigs please post some screens with similar settings so I can compare them.

I did this test in the empty editor and I was standing here:

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Hellfire45/map.jpg

Post processing effects is always low. Changing the resolution seems like has little to no effect on vegetation so I didn't tinker with it I use 1024x768 to gain slightly better FPS.

Everything set to normal with 100% fillrate:

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Hellfire45/normal1.jpg

Everything set to high with 150% fillrate:

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Hellfire45/high1.jpg

Everything set to very high with 200% fillrate:

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Hellfire45/veryhigh1.jpg

I also made these screens near Stary Sobor:

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Hellfire45/normal2.jpg

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Hellfire45/high2.jpg

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Hellfire45/veryhigh2.jpg

Is this how the vegetation supposed to look like with these settings?

Trees dont look too nice here either.. the worst of all is that i get low detail tree LOD models alot, the forest trees are the same they used in North Sahrani i think.

Sometimes it feels like im playing with 256 MB video memory although my card has 768...

The trees in south sahrani were amazing in both detail and performance...

Why don't you guys use PP. That way the picture is much more smoother.

Without it vegetation, trees & bushes looks jagged even with AA.

What are your settings? On your first pic I bet those yellowish/red bushes would look messy in my game.

If i recall those shots were taken from v. 1.01 everything very high detail 1280 x 1024. Fillrate setting i don't remember was it 100% or 200%.
