Movie: The true battle of Chernobyl

Its a movie about the Chernobyl accident. Reminds you of the hazards of nuclear power, and the consequences of a nuclear weapon. It takes up a good 1.30 but it makes you realise the stupidety of nuclear weapons enjoy!

The Discovery documentary is better IMO, shows things more in context and is less "sensational".

The Chernobyl incident could never have happened in a modern plant, it was, amongst others, the result of poor construction, and a traditional Soviet fear of reporting up the chain in fear of reprisals. It could have gone a lot worse though.

I was also worrying about gorbatchovs inappropriate cheerful face when he told the reporter the sad details of the chernobyl-crisis.

I also think the most of the interviewtee acted more as an selfish, heroic actor instead as a factual documentarist.

its a completely different type of documentary

yours focus on the center of the accident itself

the other focus on the aftermate of the accident

there is no good/bad/more/less between both documentary

Thats actually your opinion, people can decide if they feel one is better than the other, personally I have only seen the Discovery channel one (i think) and that was very sobering indeed.

on a subjective point of cause you can decide if they feel one is better than the other

but i really cant find out anything that makes me to compare them, really, like i said its focus on different things, one the accident itself, one what happen after the accident, both equally important.

What is sobering is that Discovery actually did make documentaries once, before they started the whole MTV-alike thing, with arguing motor bikers and Jackass-like shows like worst jobs, and sensation-intended documents.

Discovery Channel is shit. It's too centered on the UK and US. UK-SAS, UK-pilots, RAF, D-Day etc, UK saves the world every day. UK paper, beer, other stuff are best etc. Pathetic.

Soviet scientists were doing experiments on chernobyl, ie to see if it could be made more efficient on startup (or shutdown). I think they wanted to do some tests on or combine it with the security system, but it failed (safety system didn't start quick enough), hence the accident.

However, this all didn't happen under -normal- operation.

It has nothing to do with poor construction or some stupid "fear". Liberal Discovery channel has no clue what they are talking about. They are just taking a western point of view on things outside their part of the world. It is heavily biased.

My source is a guy I know who was supposed to be involved in those experiments. But his team was changed for another.

well after watch it for over 10 years on cable there is only few shows that i liked left on discovery (i.e myth buster), and i like NGC more now adays, maybe if one day i change to broadband TV i would have history chennel instead, god knows

So you are in a bizarre situation of a science channel, that contains no science.

Discovery still makes good documentaries, but they have another channel they own for running them - appropriately enough, The Science Channel. Sometimes it leaks on to normal Discovery and you get some good programming like How It's Made and the odd space documentary. The Military Channel is another one where they took good shows like Wings and rolled them into their own channel, problem is that neither are basic cable channels.

Discovery channel is invariably biased in a highly nationalistic way in favour of the program makers. (Who in fairness know who their audiences are).

Not really suprising on the military related themes.

Although, despite invariably being of a similar bias to the program makers I frequently find myself unable to believe a word they say.

It all seems so factual until you catch the lie and then it throws their entire programs and even series into disrepute.

It's usually pretty jingoistic stuff. Well worth watching mind you, but bring a pinch of salt to TV with you.

I just watched it all, Chernobyl has always have been highly interesting to me. A purely terrifying accident which claimed many a brave soles life.

It was a terrible accident, Which still isn't solved, since the Accident Hundreds of People, Mostly New born babies have been disformed.

When I logged onto Virgin media yesterday, Virgin had sent one of their reporters to Chernobyl, to go on a tour of the NPP, It's perfectly safe. Heres the link :-

Yea, theres actually tours with guides etc there, would be a interesting trip to make.

Not far from my house there is a road that had a major rockfall in 1991, two were wounded and one killed.

After that the road was restricted of access because of the danger of reoccurring falls and a tunnel

was dug through the mountain instead.

Its pretty interesting to walk there and see how much the nature has taken back in barely 17 years.

I think if the humanity was wiped out in a instant, there wouldn't be much, if any,

proof of our existence in 50-100 years.
