GeForce 9800 GX2

Recommended Posts

Basic fact getting the GX2 in June is useless the GTX 280 comes out soon and LGA 775 systems are much better in gaming than LGA771 and no I'm not jealous. I dont care about Skulltrail or the Asus "Skulltrail".

I still need to check this thing on XP 64...maybe ill switch to vista 64.

Universal U´d better read the entire post to see what this rig is for.

And...why am I running this on 32 bits is as simple as -my ISP have no 64 bit drivers for the internet adapter. I could have buy a new adapter with drivers that fit...but my dealer told me to wait because soon they are releasing Wifi2 wich will be quite more powerfull than the current wifi and will allow longer ranges. By that time maybe i pick a second GX2 and ser Quad SLI.... nener.gif

Yes I saw rendering ..... but going for Xeon is not worth it just grab a pair of QX9775's. You didn't cheapen out on this rig so why cheapen out on the CPU ?. GTX 280 is the most powerful GPU created by Nvidia not the 9800 GX2 (and that would be the XFX 9800 GX2 BLACK EDITION).

Right, so where exactly do you buy these things? I think youre forgetting that they aren't ready yet, and probably wont be for a few more months smile_o.gif Making a post that claims that a person's graphics card is shit on the basis that it will be replaced in a few months by a faster card is a rather stupid argument. In theory, you should never buy a computer because it will inevitably be outclassed.

I had money...but not all the money. My old rig is still alive with 2 Xeon Nocona 3,6 Ghz HT. So I think that setting my small renderfarm with this 2 bros. will do the job pretty well. The most powerfull GPUs are not for gaming...they are for professional use and:

- Fall out of my budget FX 5600

- Dont need that much muscles since my Old FireGL v7100 still does pretty well.

- Drivers certified for professional use are focused on using DCC software are run like a dog with most of the games.

I think you're confusing that with the 4870 X2 wink_o.gif. European PC stores are already accepting pre-orders for the GTX 280. Quadro's and FireGl are ridiculously overpriced.

Do show. Googling GTX 280 shows up a lot of pages speculating on the specs of the card.

How can there be speculation when there is pics and information about the card shown at Computex 2008. Its no longer a secret icon_rolleyes.gif

Right. But its still pre-order. Point of the thread was that the OP had a problem with his card. Telling him that it is going to be obsoleted in a month or two doesnt really add anything to it. Fact is, its a good card, it now works, everyone's happy smile_o.gif

Yes but it doesnt make sense to get a 9800 GX2 when the GTX 280 will be released in June. Its like buying a new rig right before Nehalem release. It also seems he didn't build it himself but had the dealer do that.

Some ppl simply have to buy something and can not wait for various reasons.

He also has the dual Xeon's due to Rendering and other tasks, so what's wrong with that?

Discussing it after he already bought it is useless too, why is it necessary?

I truelly do not understand what is there to discuss. To each his own choices and needs right?

On top of the fact that the 280 is gimped by the ridiculous price. Picked one up yesterday, and its a great card, but $800.00 CDN is not a great price. On top of that, the 9800 GX2 beats the 280 in many games. One of the few I have seen the GX2 lose in is Crysis and that is only because it isnt properly optimized for SLI.

I have both of them and I have to say the the 9800 GX2 is a better deal financially and performance wise than the 280. It also looks like ATI might be about to pull a rabbit out of their hats as the 4850 Xfire review over on guru3d indicates that the 4870 may well be a force to be reckoned with.

Im picking up a GTX 280 (XFX GTX 280 XXX (Overclocked Edition)) aswell soon. I hear about way too much trouble with SLI, so even though the 9800GX2 might perform better in some games, I rather have 1 card with near the same power.

Besides, 9800 GX2 is basicly the same architecture as 8800, where as GTX 280 is renewed, I do expect performance increases in drivers etc, just like after the introduction of most cards.

What I read about the R770 is that it might keep up with GTX 280, when combined in crossfire, or by using a 4870x2.

As such im actually more impressed with the GTX 280, as it achieves the result of 2 gpu's smile_o.gif

In any case; Always have to watch and see which rumours are true smile_o.gif

How does ArmA run for you?

Early problems with the 280 being slower than the GX2 could easily be driver related. At any rate, one card with one chip is always going to be better than some SLI mess.

Actually one HD4870 keeps up with GTX280 quite well, beats the GTX260 for the most parts and even beats the GTX280 in a few games.

Thanks for sharing, I didn't see that one yet :-)

Indeed, this review shows different results than what I've read.

I'm interested to follow how the next weeks unfold; More reviews, more games, and more driver updates in both camps.

I wasn't too impressed with ATI's last few generations, except X### and X1### series. Not that I was impressed with Nvidia's 9### series (In terms of performance progression) smile_o.gif.

These ATI series seem a lot better though, but as GTX 280 owner, i'm of course hoping for the magic driver updates that would lift the performance up in the benefit of Nvidia  wink_o.gif

Not to mention the difference in price :-)

Yeah, you can get like 2 HD4870 for the same price as 1 GTX280 smile_o.gif

And on top of that support the "sinking ship" (AMD).
