Weird terrain effect

Recommended Posts

I have done a small preview of my map, and found that the terrain is doing something weird, it is hard to describe, but I will try anyways:

It looks like instead of a square terrain grid, it has made on out of diamonds.

Here is the original heightmap in Wilbur:

And here is the effects I am getting on the flat ground

Things you should note:

-The heightmap has been resized, scaled downwards.

-I am using an old version of visitor 3.

-I am crap at visitor 3.

Any recommendations?

Any recommendations?

too much noise. :/

in this case, no other way than use a blur... carefully.

i'm still trying several combinaison of heightmap resolution , bluryness etc ... , but it seem that a gaussian blur @ 2 pixel radius seem good

ps: have you patch the DEM for missing information holes ?

EDIT:

The Gaussian blur fixed it, thanks biggrin_o.gif

Here is a very small potion of the map. (Nevada Desert)

Have you exaggerated the heights? Those mountains are too steep. I've spent a lot of hiking in Nevada over the years smile_o.gif

Probably what happened, was when I reduced the terrain cell size, it kept the mountain height. If I increase it to the normal size, it should fix it. but some people might object to a map that is 250 000 square kilometers in size.

take into consideration though, that this is southern nevada, by las vegas.

I did an update, here are the same mountains:

and here are some mountains from the same region.

and more, i still no way to manage 2048x2048 25 or 50 meter / cell.

visitor always crash .

This one is at 2048x2048 with a cell size of 50 meters.

I think I found where Las Vegas is supposed to go. I should probably remove the water.

The adjusted height in the updated version looks spot on. Nice.

I'm quite sure YOU would not enjoy doing a 250,000 square km map wink_o.gif

Looks great! Next you'll be needing a pyramid, some advertising lights and an Elvis unit. yay.gif

What source did you use for the heightmap? How large are you going to make the city? Maybe you should use a 1940's city plan so it wouldn't get too big for ArmA to run it? tounge2.gif

Can't, the mountains become more like gentle slopes. This looks about right, the proportion of everything, as you said, is spot on.

Alright, that last place wasn't Vegas, it is very close though. It looks like I will have to make the map bit larger, I have been comparing with Google earth.

looking good but please be aware that trying to import the sat and mask images for terrain with a 50m cell size will be impossible due too the limits of the tga format, you will most likely have break down the sat an mask do it in smaller parts

having experinced this first hand myself when vistor3 was first released

working  with a 4096 map with 50m cell size, resulting in

204800 x 204800 sat n mask = 30gb pbl file to try and get into tga format for the import... banghead.gif

we reduced the cell size down and even then once the sat and mask images are imported bulldozer would run at less than 1fps,even on a pretty decent pc! crazy_o.gif

shame as its great fun when flying from one end of the island to the other takes close to 10 mins in a harrier

Why are you using .tga files for sat and mask, or even terrain textures?

The format is supposed to be .png.
