kocrachon 2 Posted December 30, 2007 What all Aircraft/Vehicles can use the laser ability? I know the harrier with GBUs can and I know that the AH-1 can, but what else in the game can target using the Laser Designator. And By use I mean optimize. Something that gets enhanced targeting from it. Not like how everyone can now see the target. But something that gains a better ability to hit it. PS. I searched for this and found nothing. NoRailgunner 0 Posted December 30, 2007 AI doesn't use Laserdesignator as they should work. Pilots should release their guided bombs far away from AAA and SAM. Bombing in ArmA is more like in some WWI and WWII missions - AI pilots have to recon with their own eyes possible targets, flying into hostile airspace and enemy ground-to-air fire. the unknown 0 Posted December 30, 2007 Also if they didnt fix it yet bluefor is the only one able to use the LD for some weird reason.
Trapper 0 Posted December 30, 2007 There is no laser ability simulation like you expect. All vehicles/custom buildings show up as red/white blocks on your aircraft "radar" when there is a line of sight (terrain) and they are not too far away (related to view distance option). With the laser designator a weapon was implemented which is able to create and move around a ghost object which is recognized as "laser target" on corresponding aircraft radars. Still the <> [] system requires a constant lock from the aircraft to hit, like if the target would be lit by the aircraft laser. At least this tool gives you the chance to target any point on the battlefield with the help of a spotter and a guided weapon, otherwise you're bounded to a godlike aiming or FFARs for this. max power 21 Posted December 31, 2007 Since the spotter can put the laser target where ever he wants, it's useful for bombing things that aren't lockable normally. Anything that can target lock can acquire the laser target, but the laser guided bombs can ONLY target laser targets. I'm not sure how high up on the list of priorities laser targets are for AI controlled attack helicopters but in OFP they really loved to shoot at those things. kocrachon 2 Posted December 31, 2007 I think I have may have asked the question wrong. Heres what I am looking for. Are there any aircraft or vehicles that can rely on a laser designator for, what should I say... better targeting? The AV-8b litterally gets the bombs to be pin point. The AH-1 gets the better ability to lock on. And so forth. Any other vehicles get bennifits like that from the LD?
fasad 1 Posted December 31, 2007 There is a value in the config for vehicles called "laserScanner". If this value is true, then that vehicle can detect laser designator objects (belonging to either side). I don't want the trawl through all the configs for you, but out of curiosity I checked the aircraft... The AV8b, A10, AH1W and SU34 have laserScanner ability. Similarly, weapons ability to lock onto laser targets is defined by the config value "laserlock". Only the "Bo_GBU12_LGB" and "M_Hellfire_AT" can lock onto laser targets. Trapper 0 Posted December 31, 2007 Perhaps the Cobra's cannon can be adjusted in realtime by the spotter while locked on a moving around laser target?
max power 21 Posted January 3, 2008 I don't think the gunner will shoot the cannon at the laser target. The hellfires will follow the target as best they can, tho.
Trapper 0 Posted January 3, 2008 I was only thinking about multiplayer and a single pilot with manual fire activated.
max power 21 Posted January 3, 2008 You can try it yourself, but I don't know if the gunner will track the laser target with the cannon either. He might rather try to acquire other targets.
ArmaVidz 0 Posted January 5, 2008 Anyone having issue with laser designator in Arma be on the lookout for the newest version of TrueRangeAi in the near future. In a new vid I did I am running TrueRangeAi v0.92 and the differences it makes in Ai engaging is insane. Soldiers engage air targets with RPG's, Harriers take out (mapfact laser targets) targets on the first pass with a GBU strike and all kinds of other awesomeness. I haven't tried Ai soldiers lasing targets and destruction but I imagine it will be dramatically improved. Highly recommended.
