wamingo 1 Posted October 23, 2007 For they who wonder: Auto Leveling - When flying mainly helicopters you constantly need to force the nose down manually to maintain speed. Simulating trim without trim controls? I find it unnecessarily painful and I don't know anyone who doesn't think so. If you agree, check option 1. Auto Centering - is when you stop moving your mouse, the aircraft will stop turning - equal to centering the stick. Turning an aircraft is difficult to do smoothly which results in the primary reason for loss of speed or altitude. If you controlled how much you turned per second rather than a fixed amount or a vast reduction of the auto-centering, I think, it would help not only allowing to turn with more ease, but making the game much closer to the real thing without needing a joystick. If you agree, check option 2. The rest is self-explanatory. Many things could help improve the flight controls but these two are relatively straightforward. Discuss. (hopes this is a valid poll)
celery 8 Posted October 23, 2007 I recently played in the OFP editor to compare ArmA and OFP Camel controls. OFP wasn't even close to the newer one's agility and precision. The helicopters were better though. However it's annoying that you can't even choose if you want a free floating mouse cursor to control the flying direction opposed to constant motion to maintain the move. The lack of rudder power is disturbing and what really shocks me is that the rudder doesn't work at all when your plane is banking. The rudder just drops down with the gravity to whichever side is down at the moment. Otherwise I find the keyboard and mouse controls ideal for flying. It's not hard to squeeze everything out of the Sopwith Camel by using keyboard for strong moves and mouse for aiming.
MehMan 0 Posted October 23, 2007 Oh the nose going up or down always is a pain. But I think it's got more to do with the distribution of weight in the GeoLOD. Also, mouse autocentering issue on the bugtracker
Balschoiw 0 Posted October 23, 2007 Suma: Quote[/b] ]I would not expect this to be fixed for ArmA, though we will definitely consider improving it somehow for ArmA 2 (most likely by introducing absolute mouse readings as well). Among other flaws this is one of the biggest letdowns for me with Arma.
rundll.exe 12 Posted October 23, 2007 Quite so Bals. I cant drive a truck down the road without getting off it all the time. In OFP it was perfect. Breaking things that are good seem to be BIS specialty With all respect: how hard can it be to make the game read the "windows" mouse position (like in OFP) as an addittion? Mr_Tea 0 Posted October 23, 2007 @ Suma I don`t want to have this "autocenter-feature" fixed. I want an button to disable it, that`s all. The same goes to HDR.
Commando84 0 Posted October 24, 2007 i get the points with air controls, but imo why would someone want to disable HDR its one of Arma's strong points, in my class i have already managed to convert over 2 peoples to like arma and maybe even get them to lan play thats a big step. without HDR i dunno if it would been possible. Â Â Among other flaws this is one of the biggest letdowns for me with Arma. you know what i find odd about that respose by suma? apparently, the game can handle a mouse cursor (and read absolute mouse values) perfectly fine when your player is holding a gun and aiming it, but once you jump in a vehicle... suddenly the problem becomes "it's so difficult we'll try and fix it for ArmA2" does anyone else think that's wierd? @Celery: a while ago i placed the rudder issue in the bugtracker, and after a VERY long and protracted argument with suma, he's put it is a 'low priority' issue in the internal BT, so at some stage it'll be fixed. for the moment, i found planes fly somewhat ok if you enter OPPOSITE rudder when you turn. goes against everything i learnt in flight school, but hey, it works for some odd reason in ArmA. to the OP: all the aircraft don't have trim controls, and yeah, Â it sucks. never flown a helo IRL, so i'm not sure if helo pilots actually have to hold the controls down when they fly - but seeing as aeroplane pilots don't have to hold the stick/yoke to the side all the way through the turn, i guess it would make sense. i'm not sure what you're trying to say in the auto-center part - are you saying that you would need to keep moving the mouse to continue a turn? because i don't really agree with that, it would be akin to how driving a car in ArmA is like now. i agree there needs to be a general re-working of all keyboard/mouse controls for aircraft, but i doubt that might be the best solution. He didn't say it was difficult. From my POV, this response is just a gentle way to say they consider ArmA finished and do not want to spend any more time on it. The other guy, Marek, said it more directly, but I can't find the interview for citing at the moment.
