Recoil; a question for everybody

Recommended Posts

Does anybody else find the recoil to last too long? I mean from when the shot was fired up to where the shooter recovers and is back on target. It looks as if the shooter doesn't have control over the weapon as if he's not holding it correctly. Or is this realistic? It just seems too long and too out of control for efficent shooting. Maybe it's because I'm used to OFP where the shooter recovers nearly instantly, but that felt better.

Anybody else feeling the same way that I do?

I never had a problem with it in ArmA. Feels ok to me. I did however hate the OFP recoil "simulation".

Agreed here. BIS went with a realistic feel to the recoil, movement and changing posture, but was it overdone? Instead of feeling immersive and fun, controlling a characer in ArmA is an effort and even gets you killed at times. Halting while reloading and two levels of scope zoom only compounds this problem.

As someone that is doing the stuff in Arma for real during the week days I feel the game does a rather decent job regarding both player movements, weapons and recoil. (comparing to most other games out there)

I do however have a few issues:

1. You have to stand still when you reload (why on earth?!wink_o.gif

2. Shooting MG´s (especially the M240) crouching or standing requires a completely different handling than with rifles. You dont aim over the barrel, insted you literally shoot from the hip and let the tracers and experience guide your aim. This used as supressive fire, but not possible to do in Arma because of the recoil in those positions.

3. After 250 rounds through a M240 your barrel is starting to melt creating all sorts of issues. Red Orchestra managed to implement this issue, and I hope that BIS take a look at it for further installments. It offers a lot more realism and things to consider when playing.

4. The shock effect from blasts (as in BF2) from own heavy guns and explosions.

I have in Arma never encountered what you say about that the player looses control of his aim, except in situation that really call for it. Shooting a MMG or Barret without support for example.

While I don't have a Problem with Recoil in the game, it's far from what I experience when shooting much larger Calibers than 5.56 for real.

The whole recoil reaction in ArmA looks like it's slow motion for me.

OFP recoil simulation was not better... it was just unrealistic laserlike accuracy style.

Yes i do. Its one of the things that i hate on ARMA. It also might be my computer fault.

The speed of the recoil and the speed of the zoom don't transmit me the right feeling as it should.

lol yea. Of course guns recoil and automatically return to their starting position, automatically!

I liked ArmA's 'simulated recoil' system. I'm not saying its perfect, but its definitely a step in the right direction.

They do if you hold them properly.

Thats true... if a .308 Huntign rifle does, a M16 or M4 should too...AKs are somewhat prone to jumping, but not as exessive as portraied in Game.

AND the slow motion recoil effect make shooting semi auto doublettes (like I'm used to) quite difficult.

BTW: I never noticed a recoil that large with M-16 oder G-36... ingame it feels more like a G-3 oder a .300 WinMag Rifle.

Hell ...even a 9mm pistol with hard loaded ammunition hits harder in regard of recoil than small caliber assault rifles.

Oh..next point...the handgun recoil is undermodeled.

sumthing is wrong with MG's. 240/PKM has way too much recoil when fired from the hip. And then theres the super weapon, SAW.

I noticed that whatever position u shoot it the recoil is allmost the same. wierd thing is that if u stand up and shoot saw with full autoburst the recoil is allmost non existent.

Uhm...I'vs seen people shooting a MG-3 from "the Hip"...It's like Spraying...don't underestimate the "thrust" that a .30 MG develops.

if you think the recoil lasts too long you can change it by editing the config file and shortening the time it takes for the weapon to return to 0,0.

i personally feel it's really spot on.

Yes, it will break the signature because you are modifying original files. For SP it should be fine, but don't use modified files in MP.

You could put the modified file in a mod folder that you only use for SP.

When i read the title, i immediately thought "He's gonna say the recoil is too slow"

By god i was right. And i completely agree. I always feel like im recoiling in slow motion in ArmA. It seems even worse with a scope up too.

yeah.. maybe it has to do with the computer specifications.. huh.gif

maybe my computer is crap? in some videos i notice the movements , zoom, recoil seem faster then what i have.

I also would like to as is its possible to increase the speed of zoom in and out?

I also think the zoom is kinda slow for my taste.

Are the player shooting from the hip then? I mentioned this in my post, that its wierd that the model even fires the M240 from the shoulder, making accuracy a wishfull thinking.

The SAW can be fired from the shoulder and have the same accuracy as a standard AR when on Auto i.e pretty poor.

The reason that the recoil seems bigger with optics is that you better can appreciate where the barrel is pointing. The relative recoil should be the same.

http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/recoil

here's a quick reference of how the recoils work.

the trick is there's no fun or skill involved in shooting laser guns.

more realism in how the rifles 'act' should always be of 1st priority.
