Griffon2-6 0 Posted September 13, 2007 Hey everyone, I'm just trying to get an idea of the popularity of a Chinese People's Liberation Army mod if it existed. My idea for a mod like this is a "PLA through the ages" mod, starting with game elements from: 1920's Long March then 1932-1945 the Anti-Japanese war (when they were known as the 8th Route Corps of the National Revolutionary Army) 1945-1954 Chinese Civil War against the KMT 1950-1953 The People's Volunteer Army in the Korean War 1962 Sino-Indian war (only a maybe, Indian Army is a tremendous amount of work) 1969 Border Conflict with USSR 1979 Sino-Vietnamese war Modern Day warfare with random forces (including US, Xinjiang insurgents, etc.) So just post here if you would be interested in a mod like this. This won't be coming any time soon, I have no work on this yet, I don't even have a team yet. My specialty is level design, so I will make some campaigns based on a few movies I have watched regarding the PLA.
Denz 0 Posted September 13, 2007 I'd be interested. I have been hoping for a mod that would look at the China & USSR border tensions of the 60s and 70s. Unfortunately, I know sod all about creating addons. My only experience being porting OFP addons across to Elite. I could create some missions and provide some information for you though. Some contemporary Chinese Military addons on their own would be sweet.
max power 21 Posted September 13, 2007 I would choose one small aspect of the PLA and go from there. All the assets needed for a pan-century mod would be such a workload that it would never be finished.
Mr_Tea 0 Posted September 13, 2007 Modern day units would be excellent. Cancel the older stuff and concentrate on the modern stuff, than it fit`s to the other parts of ArmA with no problem.
max power 21 Posted September 13, 2007 I would recommend that you do whatever most inspires you.
Griffon2-6 0 Posted September 13, 2007 If I go ahead with this, what I plan to do is release elements of it bit by bit. That way, I can do as much or as little as I want. Plus, some of the things I need are already modeled by other people. I will ask them if I can use it, I guess. Why should the same thing be made twice right? This way, I can do as much, or as little as I want, based on my time restrictions. Release one set (e.g. 1927 set), or release more than planned. Additionally, many things just need a reskin, because (and this shocked me) WWII Japanese warm climate troops look exactly like SLA helmeted troops! KMT troops can also be made from the same model with some skinning tricks.
Col. Faulkner 0 Posted September 14, 2007 ...WWII Japanese warm climate troops look exactly like SLA helmeted troops! Only if you have very low standards of authenticity.

Then find me pics of WWII Japanese arid climate troops. I know the camo and such are different, but a re-skin is not hard.
CanadianTerror 0 Posted September 15, 2007 Your first post sounds over optimistic considering you want to do just reskins. People are a bit tired of reskins. Starting another mod using SLA models as Chinese is just kinda meh. Just my 2 cents but why not pick 1 timeframe and make some addons that havent been made before. Thats more interesting. Griffon2-6 0 Posted September 16, 2007 VME who made the amazing (and in my opinion very underused) PLA mod for OFP have moved to ArmA,so hopefully we'll see some stuff soon. That's awesome. And I don't want to do just re-skins, I am planning to do new models, but only for the PLA, and more specifically, the 8th Route Corps (八路军).

Japanese clothing and equipment of that era was entirely different from the ArmA SLA models. Most obviously, the Soviet SSh-60 that the SLA troops wear is totally different from the very distinctively shaped Type 92 tetsubo. The SLA infantry equipment looks nothing at all like the Meiji Type 30 infantry equipment. The thick kevlar vests and high-leg combat boots don't represent the Type 5 uniform at all either. And so on, and so on. Reskin away if you like, but they'll never look authentic.
