Shrubs restricting movements

Recommended Posts

I think there is unnecessary movement restrictions cause by even the smallest bushes. Some plants which in real life shoud be easy to walk through, prevent movement. Does anyone else feel this way about them.

Ever tried running directly trough the middle of a bush? Yeah, you are going to be slowed down alot, might as well take 1 step to the side extra and run around it.

The plants do restrict your moves too much. They don't let you crawl right next to them, so when you turn next to one, you're bound to slide even further.

This could probably easily be changed via gemoetry.

Basicly what gemoetry is, is the physical 'invisible' polygon(s) that cause you to be unable to walk through or through certain part of an object. An object with no geometry is virtually a ghost object.

If we could open the vegetation p3d's in O2 then we could make the geometry smaller on bushes, in that we can crawl close to them but not exactly into them, the problem is that you will have some textured parts going through you.

I hope, the bushes will be reverted (someday) to what they were like in ArmA 1.0

No problems crawling (hiding) in bushes there.

They were changed in one of the patches (1.05?)

due to performance reasons. Please BIS, someday, bring them back.

Or could you provide both variants to choose from?

Thanks.

Edit: I'd like to add..if AI soldiers are allowed to walk through each other and walls,

we should be allowed to walk through bushes.

im sorry to say this but.. wtf.. the way bushes are right now is fine.

in real life you will never be able to hide under or in a bush.. you just cant.

you can hide under the branches on the sides, but as far as being in it goes, good luck with that.

if people could hide "in" a bush, we'd never have the need for guillie suits.

BIS leave the bushes as they are, you got it bang on.

When you next time play in your garden (or if you don't have a garden, any shrubby area), lie down next to a bush. I'm pretty sure that you don't magically stay 20-30 cm away from the root or get pushed back when you want to look elsewhere.

Oh Celery that made me laugh rofl.gif

In all seriousness though it is annoying when your taking cover in a bush only to be pushed back out of it, or have your legs sticking out and getting shot.

I would say BI has it pretty much spot on,

you can Definately hide in bigger bushes.

Ofcourse its harder in the smaller bushes because you reach the thicker branches earlier, which makes sence.

Though i agree that being 'pushed back' by the bushes can be annoying sometimes, but that also happens when crawling against buildings etc etc.

You can't get awesomely close to the center of some bushes in game and that's a detriment to the player but think of this.

You can crawl all over a bush in game and it doesn't bend, break, smash, matt down, or make noise. The bushes are perfectly resillient.

Surely that more than balances the slightly radius thing.

I happen to work in a forest most of my day and you definitely cannot just run full tilt through large shrubs or bushes, especially when you have all kinds of straps and radios and crap hanging off of you. The way BIS handles it is quite good.

I'm just glad that bushes aren't always the perfect sniperspot. You have to think a bit about what you're doing because of the branches. Hiding in a bush is not without some disadvantages and such. It's not completely real, but then, nothing really is. It's fine imo.

Haha - found this with a search for "bushes" - looking for exactly the same thing and for the same reason as the original author - I agree with troop - and the system in OFP was great - ie. a great compromise for how IRL you can use bushes for cover (as opposed to protection of course) - being able to run thru them unimpeded I don't think is all that much of a detriment to the game

Ehem... How can one use bushes as cover IRL as in OFP? I don't know any bushes which would enable that (=to go inside it), well i know one "bush", but going inside it will gives alot of itching and pain (they are poisonius). Or then one would need a machete and few minutes (if we are talking about big bushes).

Overall bushes are things which you leave between you and possible enemy. IRL that is and as in ArmA.

I somewhat don't like the fact that bushes works as obstacle. Sometimes character can turn oif his leg or weapon touches hard spots of bush. Sprinting in bushed area can be frusturating as sprint might halt and character starts to jog...
