3k.Baxter 0 Posted July 18, 2007 my vote is that they just make it so you can bind all actions to keys. EXACTLY! Surely the 'Get into vehicle right NOW because I'm being shot at and I don't want to @#%&@ die!!!!' action deserves a hotkey! I think the reload is a far more enoying than the "get in as <something>", once u start reload u cant abort or move (The same for binocs). I cant count the number of times ive been reloading and watch the AI run pass me, stop, do a 180 degree turn, go prone, and then kill me. (usally when reloading AT). I usally dont use the menu when switching from binocs to weapon, i use the F key. @kestrel7e7 isnt the default action when approaching, or close by, a veichle "Get in as <somthing>" then u just klick preform action? No need to scroll the menu...

Surely the 'Get into vehicle right NOW because I'm being shot at and I don't want to @#%&@ die!!!!' action deserves a hotkey! No, because you would need at least 3 keys: Get in as driver, Get in as Gunner, Get in as Cargo, have you 3 different unused keys at convienent places close to eachother left? The action menu usually has the 'get in as (depends on the closest door to you)' on top anyway so i dont see the problem with that? Obviously you only need one key because it is only logical (and physically possible) that you get into the closest seat to your current position relative to the vehicle, which is how most games deal with vehicle entry. Once inside you can then switch positions (if possible) using the clumsy menu to your heart's content. @ 3k.Baxter Most mousewheels are very sensitive and you can easily scroll the wheel accidently while pressing it. robert(uk) 0 Posted July 18, 2007 It's not the binocs I always get out, it's the damn gear. Â I end up crouching by the vehicle when I'm trying to get in! Â Very annoying... Â Same with me. Or that i have to frantically wave my weapon around trying to find the right spot just to get the action list up. Getting in vehicles has to be improved imho. Sometimes i've been the first to get to the vehicle when ordered to get in but almost last to get in. Yes, and what you describe is made even worse by the damn bug where if you try to get in, but someone else takes your seat, you get stuck in a stupid 'free-view' type mode. The only way to get out of this is to leave the server and rejoin, which sucks when you've built up an awesome score...
Wolfrug 0 Posted July 18, 2007 Hm, regarding the get-in "hotkey" or whatever : the game in principle already supports that. The "GET IN" waypoint automatically assigns spots for the AI (and player), and you can also do the same as the leader by simply selecting the units you want to enter a vehicle and clicking it (ALL...BOARD That JEEP) (or through the command menu "get in -> anywhere"). What I mean is, the engine already has some kind of function in place which automatically assigns the slots (from driver -> gunner -> commander -> cargo I believe). So applying the same on a player-driven command shouldn't be too hard. I.e., in an entirely empty vehicle he'd get in as the driver (if on the right side), or gunner, or if nothing else, cargo. Just adding random things to the discussion. Regards, Wolfrug
SniperRedFox 0 Posted July 19, 2007 umm... one tip: keybind
Ezekiel 0 Posted July 20, 2007 We'd need the option to keybind certain things first yknow... There isn't a 'get in vehicle' keybind that I've ever seen. Actually I'm thinking the main issue here is the way the action you're searching for can come and go quickly and cause you to accidentally click the wrong action (certainly in choppers during fast extractions, since they tend to be moving, rotating, hovering just off the ground etc). Someone needs to get creative and suggest a workable solution to the issue, a 'get in vehicle' key would work but that doesn't solve other fiddly issues like the ladder. Maybe the context menu should be triggered by the position of your feet rather than the position of your cursor, so every possible action within proximity is listed regardless of your orientation. That way you wont have to aim your cursor at a particular rung of the ladder, and you won't lose the 'get in as xyz' command if a vehicle moves slightly. I agree using little graphics for selection might be too much hassle, although I've seen it working in the VBS2 demo (for getting into particular vehicle positions, it has every single selectable position shown in a sort of diagram at the click of a button) which is what prompted the suggestion in the first place. seba1976 98 Posted July 21, 2007 What the user interfase really needs is the ability to change to every man under your command, position them the way you want, and being able to go back to the leader character with your manually positioned soldiers staying exactly the way you left them (but still reacting of course), breaking the rest of the formation until you order them to get back to you. Successful tactical games do not rely on the AI to get good positions for any purpose, they always use the above method (Hidden and Dangerous, Deadly Dozen, Line of Sight: Vietnam, Rainbow series, Ghost Recon series - before GRAW). That would be a HUGE improvement and change the whole gameplay for the better.
sailindawg 0 Posted July 21, 2007 For a really intuitive feel for menu selection, try using either Voice Activated Command (VAC) or SHOOT. I'm using VAC and it works very well, same goes for SHOOT, except one must do a bit more finagling for SHOOT than with VAC. With a VAC system, squad command becomes much more intuitive and there is much less mouse context selection to deal with. ARMA and a VAC system seem made for each other.
