dmarkwick 261 Posted July 15, 2007 ********************************************** 3.3 improvements: All files are placed into one single PBO file now. PLEASE DELETE ALL THE OLD @DM FILES. Added micro-debris sound for grenades. Each grenade is likely, but not necessarily definately, to produce small debris sound effects. Added building collapse micro-debris sounds. A wall of dust will be accompanied by a wall of crunching, tinkling sounds as dust debris strikes all surfaces. Lost the fuel station smoke effect, as it was an ugly basic test that was accidentally left in the last release. Also it was interfereing with MapFact's Chinhook helicopters. Mapfact Chinhooks do not call the helicopter smoke scripts for some reason. New 3.3 beta can be got here. See example video ********************************************** New 3.2 version can be got here. Just a new building collapse texture & particle tweak, vid showing new effect ********************************************** OK, as I've packaged up all 3 effects into one release, new thread, to hopefully catch everyone. Smoke effects - big, black columns of oily smoke. Will burn for 20-30 minutes, then will smolder for another 20-30 minutes. Rain will turn it to steam and extinguish it quicker, but only after the fuel has burned away. Uses custom animated smoke textures. Grenade effects - pretty much perfectly matches real-life footage of grenade smoke. I'm very happy with it. Uses custom smoke shapes. Building collapse effects - still a fairly raw tweak, basically I changed the default effect to last 10x longer and be 10x bigger. Changed it to grey, and made it harder to see through for longer. Still needs lots of work, but still better than the original Geddit here (Beta 3.1): DMSmokeEffects Beta 3.1 New effects showcase video An unedited (apart from a 20 minute "snooze") extensive sample of how the effects look ingame. dmarkwick 261 Posted July 16, 2007 work for MP?? Nope, sorry The grenade & building collapse effects you will see in MP, but only you (and anyone else who uses the addon) will see it. That might put you at a tactical disadvantage as generally the realistic nature of the effects means less visibility. As this sort of addon becomes more popular (people like realism, right? ) then addons will likely become a requirement. The smoke effects, only SP I'm afraid. manberries 0 Posted July 16, 2007 hey guys i just got back from a good long game of evo with your mod running with the new updates for the grenades that smoke does little to hamper your fighting abilities and as for the collapsing building i found that i was usually far away from any falling buildings so it hardly affected me and the one time i was close enough well...didn't really matter much since i HAD NO LEGS LEFT lol does add quite a lot to the mp environment add this to my sound mod and replacement of original bis soldiers and arma is starting to live up to its hype thanks for all your work and feel free to mod all the smoke effects :þ
chammy 7 Posted July 16, 2007 Hey DMarwick, You know what, the grenade effect would look awesome instead, with the AT explosions. It is a little big for the grenades.
dmarkwick 261 Posted July 16, 2007 Hey DMarwick,You know what, the grenade effect would look awesome instead, with the AT explosions. It is a little big for the grenades. Now that the grenade effects textures are in the addon I can do similar effects for most similar impacts I reckon
Commando84 0 Posted July 16, 2007 would be sweet for different smoke fx for all other stuff but no need to hurry, cause i haven't gotten tired on the arma original smoke fx really but hey thats just me

PitViper 0 Posted July 17, 2007 First post updated with new wow.. I think you're on to something! I think it is a bit big for 40mm, but would be just right for 60mm or 80mm mortar impacts.

.kju 3245 Posted July 20, 2007 looks great mate is it possible to use more black smoke / make the smoke more black. or are you bound to ArmA default "effects" - did you edit the source files (p3ds i think ... cant remember) too or is it pure config editing so far? dmarkwick 261 Posted July 20, 2007 looks great mate is it possible to use more black smoke / make the smoke more black. or are you bound to ArmA default "effects" - did you edit the source files (p3ds i think ... cant remember) too or is it pure config editing so far? More black smoke is possible, but it just highlights even more the ArmA bug where smoke is not affected by distance. The animated smoke could do with a tweak though. The building collapse effect is purely a config tweak, the grenade is a config tweak that calls a custom file, and the smoke is all custom files. For anyone reading this who has downloaded the latest version, can you please re-download at the same link (on the first post) as I forgot to actually add the smoke fix Apologies for the mistake. If you've already read this and re-downloaded 3.1, you're OK
cruzifer 0 Posted July 20, 2007 first of all, great work DMarkwick But unfortunately you have to create a mission and put a trigger in it to activate the big black smoke... it wold be nice if this would be enabled by default, that i dont need to create a new mission...??? want to have these gorgouse effects at anytime cheers mate, Cruzifer

cruzifer 0 Posted July 21, 2007 i think the smoke that is produced by a tankshot should remain longer and fade slower.by the way which sound mod do you use? cheers cruzifer
TankCommander 3 Posted July 21, 2007 Love it. My only comment to improve would be to make the grenade smoke maybe more transparent throughout as atm it looks like Flak to me. Or if you could make the flash larger that might help.

dmarkwick 261 Posted July 21, 2007 i think the smoke that is produced by a tankshot should remain longer and fade slower.by the way which sound mod do you use?cheers cruzifer I'll be fiddling with most of the effects that I can, always basing the new settings on RL footage that I find. Love it.My only comment to improve would be to make the grenade smoke maybe more transparent throughout as atm it looks like Flak to me. Or if you could make the flash larger that might help. I'll try it out, if I think it's more realistic it will be in the next release He's using Chammy's Sound Mod (CSM). I am apologies to all, I should have mentioned this. I also use SixthSense addon pack1.
PitViper 0 Posted July 21, 2007 There's something about that first pillar of smoke that isn't quite right. I don't think there is enough dispersion near the top. anyway, looks pretty good so far

FlyinBullets 0 Posted July 22, 2007 Does this effect performance at all, particularly when your looking at the smoke?
dmarkwick 261 Posted July 22, 2007 Does this effect performance at all, particularly when your looking at the smoke? I'm sure that it does affect performance, all I can say is that when doing tests, I get more or less the same FPS with & without the smoke. There's some optimisations to be worked in yet, which will further lessen the impacts, but as far as I can tell the impact is minimal anyway.
