TheUser 0 Posted February 26, 2007 As the title asks, how do I disable the "HDR" brightness change effect? It's annoying me...
bravo 6 0 Posted February 26, 2007 yes, it can be annoying sometimes.. disable it or control it.
blackdog~ 0 Posted February 26, 2007 yes, it can be annoying sometimes..disable it or control it. Is this post supposed to mean anything at all?
max power 21 Posted February 26, 2007 HDR can't be disabled.
Frosty_theAussie 0 Posted February 28, 2007 HDR can't be disabled. Well, that sucks. I hate the way the lighting is costantly always changing, it's distracting.
max power 21 Posted February 28, 2007 I didn't say anything of the sort, there! I like the HDR in ArmA.

Infam0us 10 Posted February 28, 2007 I don't think it can be disabled mate, otherwise it would give you an unfair advantage over other players if you could just stare at the units that are attacking you using the sun to their advantage

TheUser 0 Posted March 1, 2007 Is it even real HDR cause the horizon looks like it's just changing the brightness, not the way HDR is supposed to work? FarCry and HL2:E1, to name two, have implemented HDR rather well. Much better than ArmA and they came out long ago...
opf12345 0 Posted March 1, 2007 too bad that hdr isnt toggable for sp. gives me great performmence loss. meh, ill just play ofp instead
maruk 80 Posted March 2, 2007 FarCry and HL2:E1, to name two, have implemented HDR rather well. Much better than ArmA and they came out long ago... Not sure you realize ArmA provides dynamic light simulation (calculated in real world ranges and transformed to the screen) and you try to compare it to preset HDR scene with static skybox and light conditions. And real world light condition ranges are extreme and trying to bring such a thing to computer monitor has got many limitations and turns out to be a very complex problem (Check Wikipedia for some basic theory). HDR light calculations are in the heart of ArmA engine. If you "disable it" you will not see a thing in the game. Lowering brightness in Video Options slightly could help with some over-lighting situations. Disable HDR topic in Troubleshooting gives some insight information and also a hint how to create static aperture in a mission if the mission maker wants to use it. xnodunitx 0 Posted March 2, 2007 It really does, most of the time I play with lower brightness I don't notice much HDR change outside, provided you don't look into the sun, though the inside getting bright when there is no source of sunlight is a rather irritating factor..though thats present with brightness up or down
Spokesperson 0 Posted March 2, 2007 The HDR is great.
CG Man 0 Posted March 2, 2007 While were on the topic  how do we disable  gravity on bullets  and dissable bullet damage. How can we reduce bullets to 5mph so we can dodge them. The HDR def needs to go its hard to aim into the sun.
Radic 0 Posted March 2, 2007 I don't like HDR either - first encountered it in Call of Juarez demo - it looked interesting for about 30 seconds then just really annoyed me - luckily it had an option to turn it off (and the performance boost was huge) which I did and then thoroughly enjoyed the demo - will probably get the full game when prices drop. So my vote goes to the "give us the option" side.
RUKH 0 Posted March 2, 2007 It's an added tactical (dis)advantage and I like it! Try to plan your action to include the sun in your back......or attack at night
MamiyaOtaru 1 Posted March 2, 2007 "HDR" needs to be fixed for sure. It simply shouldn't be so noticeable. Turning it off wouldn't help things though. You know how sometimes it's really bright, but then tones down? If you turned it off, it would simply stay bright. Dark areas that then lighten? Without it, those areas would stay dark. In real life (and in ArmA) the difference in the intensity of light between indoors and outdoors is huge, yet humans can see in both. Without adjusting brightness on the fly, we'd have dark indoors and freakishly bright outdoors. Why not leave it like that since humans can obviously see in both IRL? Well unfortunately the range in which we can see is far greater than what a monitor can display so what's shown on the monitor has to be dynamically adjusted to make it actually visible on the monitor. It's an unfortunately crude way to approximate what our eye does by itself. Then again, all that assumes that such huge ranges of intensity really are necessary in a game, especially since monitors can't handle it. Operation Flashpoint didn't have it and for the most part had a recognizable day/night cycle. I guess what we need, instead of an option to turn off "HDR" while leaving the huge differences in intensity in place, is a more complicated to implement option to use a smaller light scale like OpFlash's so the HDR isn't necessary. Would be nice to get some extra performance out, this game really needs it sometimes.
l mandrake 9 Posted March 2, 2007 I really don't understand some people. HDR is a massive step forward in terms of realism and is one of biggest improvements over older titles like OPF - and STILL people moan and complain about it! Amazing. If it's hitting your framerate just turn it to low. It seems every new feature gets moaned at - by the same kind of people who sniffed at the automobile 100 years ago and said 'I prefer my old horse and cart thank you, it's much easier to control!' jaffo 0 Posted March 2, 2007 It seems every new feature gets moaned at - by the same kind of people who sniffed at the automobile 100 years ago and said 'I prefer my old horse and cart thank you, it's much easier to control!' People wouldn't 'moan' if the new features and updates (such as HDR and the grass) were implemented correctly to begin with but they weren't. However, by pointing out these things they get adjusted in patches, hopefully to a point where they work well and add to the game. HDR is flavour of the month like Lens flare was 5 years ago and most games implement it in an over the top way, ArmA being a prime example. It's like someone is shining a strobe light in your eyes as you turn around! If the effect gets turned down it should be something like, maybe it'll be one of the 1.05 tweaks. PS. I prefer to think of myself as providing constructive criticism, not moaning
Radic 0 Posted March 2, 2007 I appreciate what HDR is supposed to be giving us - but IMO the performance hit on most "mainstream" systems is out of all proportion with what it achieves - so the answer is simply have it there for people with Uber Machines but give the rest of us the option of having it turned off. I'm perfectly happy with a computer game looking like.... a computer game (I won't even get into what I think about attempting to take "realism" improvement into completely wrong directions). Isn't there a word in German that means: "an improvement that actually makes it worse" - Schlimbesserung or something like that??
TheUser 0 Posted March 2, 2007 how do we disable  gravity on bullets I thought they did...
Radic 0 Posted March 2, 2007 See that's what I mean about wasting time on the wrong things (I do understand the sarcasm of the above BTW) - ie. I'm happy to cop a performance hit in return for the IMPORTANT things like proper ballistics - or more pointedly, BETTER AI - than........ fancy pants LIGHTING effects !!! Is a waste of valuable and limited resources IMO - as I said, at least provide the option.
NeMeSiS 11 Posted March 2, 2007 Well at night it is perfect actually, the whole 'eyes need to adjust to darkness' works perfectly and looks beautifull, its during daytime that the changes are way too big and occur to fast (it looks like its done in steps, and the difference between those steps is too big and occur too fast)
