It goes like this

OFP - this game that we all love came out first

VBS1 - then vbs came out, based on the same engine.

ArmA - Wow, new engine. ArmA.

VBS2 - Based on the ArmA engine.

Game 2 - 3rd engine, I believe planned for 2008.

I believe planned for 2008.

I know its only speculation but are you telling me ArmA will only have a shelf life of one year. There's no point in making any mods for it then because they'll only get ported over to game2.

Personally i can't see Game2 arriving before 2010, 2009 at the very earliest or if ArmA fails miserably your estimate might be accurate.

I've a feeling this is gonna get locked though.... whistle.gif

well, yes we all loved ofp, played it solid, but then,at the time, there was nothing like it,not even arcade stuff that was the scale of this,.

now-a-days,there is,.

i just really hope that the old ofp players, all 50 of you, lol, stop too think about wrecking bis as a company, and all there work, and let them introduce some playability.

even if it means the dreaded "jump" that you all kackle over due to being owned in bf2.

without you all shitting ya pants that your game is trashed.

lighten up,ofp is dead, arma is well, unknown lets say.

game2 ftw,get it right bis.

more playability = bigger community, more money, = more support for a truely fantastic playable game.

no more of this "but ofp this ofp that" nonsense pls.

its too lumpy for gamers of today.

pff,your company,do as you will,shelf life of 4 months? or 4 years?

yes ofp is the 4 year type, but arma isnt, now considering arma is a better ofp,why does it fail??

lumpy.

we are now almost an MMO game generation, all have mass connections.move forward.

thanks for the info on game2 guys wink_o.gif

Your exactly right, I believe 2008 is when they hope to devote full resources toward its development. I would then expect 2 years--2010

just think,bf2 style, without the silly masive jump, with no silly bullet spread.

but with arma style, massive maps, sorted AI,huge online community.

omg,you just owned the market.

better still, all above with MMO,and boom 8 million customers like in wow,lol

You have to understand, ArmA, as many people might not think has only been under serious development for a year and a bit.

It was originally intended as a thing for the fans to bid their time with whilst BIS worked on Game 2, which will be one of the most amazing things ever.

ArmA was really i supose can be said a by product of the idea for the OFP:E of which engine it is based off, all be it an improved one, it is still Poseidon 1.

Game 2 (not OFP 2, read about copywrite etc) is going to use an engine called Poseidon 2. That will be completely new code. Not based off something else.

And to confuse you further, Codemasters are looking for staff for a Operation Flashpoint 2 (un-sucessfully so far as we know)

P.S. Bear in mind that BIS isn't a massive company like some of these other game developers so dont expect BF shite of trillions of new versions out every second

sounds great,

its what i thought actually about arma.

its been nice to see the new ofp so to speak.

but those that played it to death are just now a little bored of its game play, hell we just did 4 years of it.

the grass is sweeter on the other side it seems, well, until mr no grass addon modded it :P

am thankful of arma, and for its old ofp players, althou it might not seem like it the way i dish this game at times.

i just want it to be a hit,so we got loads playing it,so when all our clan play,we feel its new, fun, playable with a huge online response to multiplayer and a bloody good time smile_o.gif

i miss ofp greatly (or rather what i felt for it at the time) we hope that the new one will replace that feeling of ofp, with new style's of playability.

this isn't the forum for game2 talk...

But to make it clear, game2 is going to be a totally diffrent game from ArmA in the sense of gameplay. So there is no reason BIS will hold off on releaseing it. ArmA is ment to be a more advanced Flashpoint, as where Game2 is a totally new and diffrent game with RPG elements and such. so really the two games are not compitition for eachother.

I remember when two or three years ago I saw the first picture of OFP2. There was running american soldier in Vietnam on that picture. So when Arma came out,i thought they had decided to change the story. And now,all that talking about Game2 ...I wonder, what for that picture was shown to us? Does this picture own Game2 or smth else?

It's not what i "estimate". It's what I read in PC Gamer some year back.

This is a quite pointless thread, but I let it alive...

Moving.

OFP 2 was going to be released under "Crapmasters" as the sequel to OFP. I remember the website which was an old tv set and it was going to be set in multiple 'theatres of war' around the world. Then crapmasters pulled out their support from BIS and so BIS were left alone huh.gif ... Crapmasters now own the rights to the name OFP 2. Hence ArmA was created from the ashes of the OFP engine, rearmed and reloaded biggrin_o.gif

Game2 is basically going to be 'OFP 2' but BIS cant call it that because Crapmasters are well.. crap. But Game2 may have changed from the original ideas of OFP2 and i dunno how much Codemasters actually owns of the previous development..

Since the thread is still alive, I will speculate some more smile_o.gif

First, I think the original intention was to simply have an OPF 2. We all saw the Vietnam Televison screen image.

I would imagine that BIS was hoping for a substantial investment from Codemasters to bring OPF 2 to life. However, somewhere along the line that relationship went south--perhaps over the OPF-Elite version which seemed to take much longer than originally expected.

Regardless of the cause, Codemasters is out. Without a namebrand international publisher, and their $$$, BIS has had to rethink its development plans. Since developing a revolutionary new game with a completely new game engine would require loads of resources ($$$wink_o.gif, BIS has decided to release an interim "upgrade" game with the sole purpose of generating quick and dirty resources to support the development of OPF 2 (or whatever it will be called).

While some may be critical of this, I believe that ArmA is such a leap that it can stand alone as a marketable super mod for OPF. I would have no problem in paying for this in the same way mod companies have charged for upgrades to the Battle of Britain (now BOB2) air sim or Falcon 4.

However, the remaining issue with ArmA is did BIS push it too far? Do the upgrades exceed the capacity of the old engine? Currently it appears that tweaking ArmA to run smoothly on and offline will take more time--maybe a year or more and so I think plans for OPF 2 will be put on hold for some time--unless ArmA has huge sales and the cash just flows into the BIS.

Given the staggered release of the game and problems with the Demo and gamers' word of mouth, I don't see this this likely,

Though I'm pulling for em.

Tobruk, the cash flow scenario makes a lot of sense since BIS is a small development house. I too hope they can get the resources needed to make somethnig as revolutionary as OFP was in 2001.

IMHO ArmA unfortunately is not that game and won't see the sales of OFP (especially if there are US publisher issues) but it should tide over the OFP enthusiasts (like myself) and attract some new blood.

Crapmasters? smile_o.gif I havent heard that in awhile.
