Naval models - BIS, is it just a matter of time?

Recommended Posts

If BIS is already putting in functional ships, such as carriers and we've already got patrol boards with fireable weapons, would it be ridiculous to envision heavy gunships, such as destroyers and subs packed with torpedos and tomahawks?

Have I gone overboard? tounge.gif

i quess the carrier and what other boats there might be are just scenery that you can walk on at best.

there is still the limitation that allows only one person fire the weapons, making a destroyer a mighty effective 2-person boat.

would be cool tho, perhaps in ofp2?

Indeed...unless BIS comes up with an easy way to overcome the one gunner limit, I dont really think we should expect anything like that. And besides that, there's still the problem of viewingdistance and weapon control when operating Tomahawks and other large sea-land weapons.

Throw Avon the life raft smile.gif

Something like this is a good idea

invinc.gif

It would be great for launching harriers and choppers but how would they go about putting soldiers on to it. Would it have to be scenery?

Looks very similar to the useless LSTs already in OFP.

This is a crappy LST:

In OFP its good for target practice by aircraft biggrin.gif

heh....dunno....something like this in MP would make today's base rapers look like amateurs. Might as well make the SCUDS aimable & give e'm a nuclear warhead

Not at all.

OFP's terrain maps are so relatively small that the battleship salvos would fly over the island. You would just have to go prone in time to avoid being decapitated. wow.giftounge.gifbiggrin.gif

I'm sure I saw something like this in Duck Soup or in a 3 stooges episode. My memory's failing me! sad.gif

Or if you have alot of enemy infantry on the beach you can drive near them and toast them with the fire it produces. Is that a 50-70m of fire?

It would work because in real life they can alternate the size of the charges that make the grenade to fly. Just like the artillery.(The haubits I did my military duty used charges all from about 1Kg to 12Kg.) So it wouldn't be too unrealistic.

To have battle ships in OFP, the maps would have to be much bigger.

And there's not only the one-weapon-fire problem. You'd also need engine-support for walking about the deck of a moving ship properly.

While not doable in OFP1, this has certainly been seen in games before, so it could be done for OFP2.

What I'd think would kick ass, is small gunboats, with a small cannon - equal to tank cannons in size and power.

Then life rafts, ability to swim and use scooba gear! Yeah!

With that, add submarine warfare to OFP2. Imagine dropping depth charges on submarines, like that excellent movie "Das Boot"!

I still don't trust anything that a group of soldiers can't take out with LAWs or RPG's wink.gif. Then again, if BIS can overcome that 1 gunner hump, & we can have some units with larger crews such as battleships (not necessarily realisticly larger!!)....that might be worthwhile.

I've been doing some testing with the LST.

As far as I can conclude, the ONLY vehicle in the game, that can crash the LST without rearming, is the Mi17 and it takes almost 150 rockets!

The A10, M1A1, and Hind all had to RTB!

Imagine how hard it would be to take out a huge battleship.

It would turn the owner into God - a phenomena that has ruined many games.

One great thing about the LST is it's highly accurate physics-model, LOL! biggrin.gif

Why not add those speed boats they had in miami vice. Then we could do "Malden Vice" with officer David Armstrong. Mb Don Johnson could be found willing to do the voice overs. We could take down brothels with a massed armour attack preceded by a airstrike by 12 a-10. And after the armour attack helo-drop a few sqauds in under cover of apaches to arrest the remaining perps biggrin.gif Then Officer David Armstrong could have a romance with one of the perps and then we could sell it to HBO or what ever and all become millionaires. WHO'S WITH ME!?!??!! smile.gif

Since OFP engine does not allow under-water scenery, if that becomes possible in OFP2, then we could have scuba gears and mini-subs. I'm totally for bridges and scuba gears, but as people pointed out, anyone with naval firepower will win the game so easily, and it would screw up the game for the rest.

My suggestion is that the carrier have some sort of limited power of defense such as TOWs and canons like M2 or Vulcan, but limit it so that even getting close to shore would not give them tremendous advantage over other ground/air units.

There is precedent for BIS ignoring crewmen on vehicles; The missing loaders on the M1A1 and M60 tanks.

Basically, there would only be one weapons control officer, one helmsman, and one captain on a ship when it boils down to it anyway. besides, How many people would want to hump ammo through the bowels of the ship, or swab decks?

1 Broadside (9x16 inch guns) = 1 weapon,

or however many 5 inch guns the New Jersey class packs, not to mention cruise missiles.

The rest of the ships compliment could be considered as "passengers"

Academic though, the maps are still too small. wink.gif

Considering the success the Argentinians had in the Falklands with simple 500lb iron bombs, a single GBU should be enough to ruin an LST's day

The Navy refers to the LST as Large Slow Target. smile.gif

If we cant have decent artillery on land, why should we have it at sea? Swimming would be cool tho...

Wars are won on the ground, not at sea!! smile.gif
