SHWiiNG 0 Posted October 27, 2006 well, this is the case not nessessarily with flashpoint, but with many recently released games, and now the release of Armed assault just around the cornerm i though i would ask before something goes majorly wrong. Anyways back to the topic, whilst playing GFX intense games / applications, i find my card overheating at temperatures of 88°C, i have the standard fan working at full speed, a powersupply fan, and an reversed fan bringing air into the computer tower. but find these not being enough to cool my card, recently i found graphic annomolies occuring during gameplay. few. so, can anyone suggest any ways in cooling my pc for say a reasonable price (or no price at all) note* no water cooling please post all your ideas or comments. j w 0 Posted October 27, 2006 I take all the fans out and put the comp in the freezer, becomes a pretty delicate mix of heat and cold You should really go with watercooling, there's a full kit from Zalman for around 250-300 bucks, wich comes with cooling-fluid, radiator, pumps and coolingblocks for both CPU and GPU. Worth it price methinks http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/code_list.asp?code=021 Then -> Reserator 2 Reserator 1 is a good product too JW
mr burns 133 Posted October 27, 2006 so, can anyone suggest any ways in cooling my pc for say a reasonable price (or no price at all) note* no water coolingplease post all your ideas or comments. If you can live with tremendous noise (53,0 dB(A)) i´d suggest buying a "Delta SHE 80mm - FFB 0812 EHE". Think that thing gave me mini tinitus.. Insane! Reckon it´d even cut off your finger at full RPM A more reasonable way would be to dust off the cooler on your graphic card if not already done.
SHWiiNG 0 Posted October 27, 2006 ah thanks for those two tips, the water cooling idea seems now tempting, lol, because i thought you needed to hook it up th the water mains lol but i was wrong.
CameronMcDonald 147 Posted October 28, 2006 Water cooling? Shmeh. For your CPU, buy yourself an ASUS Silent Square or Silent Square Pro. I have the latter, it costs a good 200 AUD less than watercooling (the decent sets, anyway) is damned quiet, gets better results than some water cooling blocks and is piss to install. I may sound like an ASUS fanboy, but I know what I'm talking about here. If your graphics card is running hot, and 88 degrees is damn hot, we're talking almost plastic melting hot there, I'd go with either watercooling or the biggest Zalman fan you can find. Oh and grease up any heatsinks you do get with Arctic Silver.
SHWiiNG 0 Posted October 28, 2006 lol cheers for that, yup thats right 88 deg C, i havent played anything since annomolies started appearing on screen, so i dunno i hope its not damaged too badly.
fasad 1 Posted October 28, 2006 Consider putting a side fan onto your case. I installed a slow 120mm fan blowing across my vid card and another over the cpu, and the max temps both dropped by 10C. It is a bit noisier though.
bonko the sane 2 Posted October 28, 2006 i know how you feel, this is my pc setup to play any game
XCess 0 Posted October 28, 2006 Heh, I got the same setup Bonko, except I have two fans because the fan on my graphics card failed
Serclaes 0 Posted October 28, 2006 I opened my pc too in summer due to the heat here, under the roof. Since then it's ok. I'm more cautious now since the fan on my old gfx card had molten.
CameronMcDonald 147 Posted October 28, 2006 @Bonko - I feel special that I can keep my case closed in summer now. I wouldn't envy dusting your machine.
BraTTy 0 Posted October 29, 2006 Some tips: The fan and the case cover off is prolly the quickest and cheapest way to fix overheating. I currently have my side cover on and no fans pointing in my computer( I still do have a fan near my computer for hot days) Adding additional case fans won't always help, you could make it worse if you change the airflow (could keep the heat there rather than evacuate) Takes some planning to direct the airflow properly, remember that your power supply is always drawing out, so I evacuate the hot air out of the rear of my case (same direction as the PS) What I am getting at is, you could have 5 case fans inside your computer, doesn't mean it will cool better than one.Depends if they are flowing the air properly, they could be working against each other If your video card fan is siezed you can replace it with something else. You won't be able to play a 3d game very long without it working Also with some video drivers you can enable the video card fan to run all the time. (later power saving video drivers control the fan) If your computer is ON and the video card fan isnt spinning doesn't mean that its broken A fan blowing air in the side of your case will help a video card work thats not cooling. The only thing that I would be worried about is the siezed fan could burn up. Unplug the power from your video card fan if its broken
TeRp 1 Posted October 29, 2006 i know how you feel, this is my pc setup to play any gamehttp://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m304/lostindanet/DSCN2303.jpg haha, that looks exactly like my setup! however, my fan is a bit smaller and not facing the tower in a 90° angle. but definately, this sucks. I got a GF7950GX2 by ASUS, and even when it is idle, it's temperature is around 60 degrees and raising dramaticaly once I play "modern" games like FEAR or Anno 1701 and also affects Mainboard and CPU a lot. So for what did I pay 500 EUR? A build-in heater for my room
fasad 1 Posted October 30, 2006 To the 40cm floor fan with open case crowd, if you need to do that something is not working!! Clean your heatsinks and check all fans are actually spinning! If you are in a hot location, overclocking and/or crazy, there is a cheap way to get the same cooling effect without using a floor fan! Buy, modify or make a case with both side panels made of an open perforated mesh, then back it with some kind of dust catching fabric. Add large, slow side fans to the left side panel. The real cost of a 120mm fan is about au$5 (us$4?), so don't get ripped off. In my experience this kind of case cools a lot more effectively than the traditional closed box with air in at front, out at top back design. It also looks a lot less daggy than an open case, although its still very vunerable to spilt coffee : ) No matter what case you use, if you use air to cool anything, you will need to do some periodic dusting. I do this by attatching a plastic pen tube to a vacuum cleaner using gaffa tape, creating a very small area of high suction. Run this over the leading edges of all your heat sinks. It's low tech but very effective. Leave the system grounded while cleaning. Good luck! a design similar to the g5 clone case I use I've added more dust filtering and use 7 120mm fans : )
CameronMcDonald 147 Posted October 30, 2006 Terpentin - the 7950GX2 is designed and tested to run chilli hot, I'm fairly sure anything under 95 is a "coolish" temperature for that card under full load. What did you expect when 2 GPUs running on uber capacity are sitting a few centimetres away from each other? I do agree it's a pain when everything else heats up... but... SLI in one card!
