Ipod

Recommended Posts

Just curious who owns an Ipod over here?

I recently bought a 4GB Ipod Nano and I have got to admit I am very happy with it so far. Share your opinions.

Also has anyone attempted to hack his Ipod? Is it hard to do? And what I have been wondering if it's possible to put for example other games on it?

Hehe I never leave electronics in the car. Plenty of crackheads over here who are willing to bust in the car window to steal your stuff icon_rolleyes.gif

Yes I own an IPod and yes IPod sucks.

You can't use it unless you install iTunes and quicktime which will muck up all your file associations despite saying "No" when installing.

Even with that aside, the menu system I think is horrid. You can't make a playlist directly on it (again requires you to use iTunes). You also cannot play anything other than MP3 and Apple's format. You can't make a playlist on any other PC than what your music/initial iTunes install is on. Tried taking my iPod and iTunes to work and because there is music on it, it wouldn't let me manipulate those titles AT ALL. The iTrip JUST died on me today, which doesn;t disappoint me because it didn;t work to begin with... the transmitting power was so low that it had to be straight up against my little radio to work.

There is pros to it though... the powercord setup is nice. The wall plug is a small box with a firewire port on it and you use the firewire cord to charge it. Inovative I thought. Not like most powercords, I can actually carry it in my pocket without noticing.

As of lately, I found devices that hold more, do more, play more formats, and do NOT require iTunes.

I've been keeping my eye on the JetAudio iAudio x5 series. I REALLY want one of those. It's screen is slightly smaller than an iPod video, but it does WAY more. It also has a phenomenal battery life.

When looking at different devices, be completely aware of the formats it plays and the software needed!! You'd think it'd all be relatively equal between devices but believe me... there are some out there that really suck (and IMO I put iPod products in that category).

I can fit 1GB of stuff in my mobile phone (Nokia 9300) and that is enough.

I own a Jens Of Sweden MP-120. 1GB there. And my LG U880 has 80MB built in + a 512MB card, so I'm fine.

I already had iTunes before I had an Ipod so that doesn't really bother me. I actually found it quite handy to be able to synchronise the music on my PC with the music on my Ipod.

Ipod Nano has an On-the-go playlist which you can make on your Ipod now. Quite handy just press a key combination and a song is added to the playlist. I used it quite a lot.

Ipod Nano also supports a number of other formats right now. IIRC MP3, WMA, AAC etc. which are the only formats I use actually.

Just out of curiosity, what type of Ipod do you own?

Ah yes, the On-the-go option....

Ok I did use that once. I needed to launch each file to add it to the list. For 100+ songs it takes forever.

Mine doesn't play ogg files or wav files I beleive.

I have one of the original 20gb iPods.... came with a car biggrin_o.gif

I have a Nano.  Good to use in my car since i can connect it with my carstereo and it beats switching cd's the whole time.

I hate Itunes, that s why i use Anapod manager, that way i can just drag & drop music into my ipod.  It helps making it more userfriendly for me.

eh I got the secound gen iPod 20GB. YOu can use the on the go playlist without "launching" any file. You can even add whole categories too it. Like you just press the button in the middle of the wheel for some time while hovering on your favourite Artist's Album entry and the whole Album get added to the list.

You also don't have to use iTunes at all. I don't use it because, frankly, I hate it. I use the winamp iPod plugin. Also tried some other tools but since I use winamp anyway I use that most. You can just add songs and stuff directly from the media library then.

Well I love my iPod. I use to carry some data on it plus my entire music collection and I find this very handy. I also put things like the train and bus schedule on it. I couldn't imagine leaving my house without my iPod wink_o.gif

I have :

* Sony MZ-909 (Japanese model) MD recorder/player. It's not netMD, USB, or expanded storage capable, but it does record both in analog and optical at very good and clean quality. Biggest hassle is transfer off the MD to the PC, that however can be done via analog playback into an electrically isolated audio system such as my Soundblaster Audigy2.

Ideally I'd like to feed it though an external processing deck, then optical spdif that into the PC instead, but it's more than adequate for the occasional casual sound work I do. Incidently, it's MD's that are commonly used for portable media interviews and such.

* Sharp Zaurus SL-C860 PDA. It's an awesome PDA, because it has a full Linux OS, screen with 4x the pixel size of most other PDA's, and a backlight strong enough to display the screen in mid-day in the sun. Plus a full keyboard you can type on and more.

The model I've got does not support SDIO or USB host, though newer models do iirc. Also they support the multi-gig Hitachi microdrive CF drives, and the battery life is quite good on the large battery. I store audio on either the half-gig SD card I have in the back all the time, or on the 1GB cf card I swap with the wifi network card. I can transfer data to the PDA via USB, IrDA, or directly to the CF card in a memory card reader on the PC. MP3 and Wav (and wma iirc) supported out of the box along with a variant of mp4 video, additional software codecs also support OGG and others. Record capability requires a spliter-cable and is non-stereo.

* Sierra Wireless VOQ GSM Triband (US frequencies) cell phone. Got it brand new and unlocked for $75, a very sweet deal. Has a SD slot for swapping data and music around. Adding a 1GB SD UltraII card that can be swapped between my digital camera, cellphone, PDA, and PC to exchange video, audio, and data, is cheaper than an iPod Nano.

------------------------------

Now I do have an iTunes account, but I don't plan on getting an iPod any time soon. I don't get a lot of music often, because that's not my thing and I'm a cheapskate. So since at the most I only get a couple new tracks at a time, it's practical to use the 'analog hole' to pull content out of itunes. Besides, theoretically you should be able to burn iTunes to CD, then bring it back via CDex.

One of my brother's has an ipod. He likes it, he uses it a lot, and he buys a lot more on iTunes. Like others have said, iTunes and iPod's go hand in hand. So if iTunes is your prefered content provider, the iPod is a great complment. If however you don't care for itunes, then the iPod is much more complicated.

Since I'm not an iTunes biggie, and have a lot of non-'i' devices, I'd like to get both the portable Digital Audio Computer and the Media Recorder from neuros audio due to the recording and transfer capabilites.

That looks just sweet, too bad they dont support bluetooth or have 2.75/3G capabilities.

Clarification :

While the newer SL-C3000 / SL-C3100 models have improved cpu and storage, and USB host (allows you attach USB devices such as keyboards and storage devices) capability, they still don't have integrated SDIO or bluetooth yet. There's CF celluar cards in the Japanese market, but I haven't seen many in the US market. If you can find one, and if it's linux supported, and supported by your provider, then you can call with it. You can also get GPS, and camera and microdrive and wired network and wifi and all sorts of other fun stuff.

The biggest complaint I've had is that the Intel PXE CPU is rather gutless trying to render PDF's, especially ones with lots of vector lines. Also, as the CF card is located on the side of the PDA, it 'breaks' the ergonomic layout by protruding on the rightside.

Ah the iPod.As a music enthusiast I drooled over my own mp3 player for too long.My first ipod was a third generation one that got stolen.

One month ago I buyed the newest ipod with 30 GB capacity and it gets filled pretty fast with the piles of electronica and instrumental music that I own in my collection.

Overall it is the best device on the market. You don`t feel it in the pocket as it is very light and thin, decent battery life and it can even play some on the go movies,I also find it inexpensive judging by GB per $ price.

Just keep in mind:

-Buy a case as the iPod is so fragile it will scratch just by looking at it

-You don`t need to use the iTunes service crap.Google out for Anapod Explorer or other 3rd part software and you are set for drag and drop heaven

-If you are even remotely and audiophil who earns for quality buy some Shures,Etymotics or super.fi earphones and burn the standard ones as they are utter crap.

I got an iPod aggeeesss ago (Must be around 3 years ago now), and it was working fine up till a few months ago.. T'was a 40GB one, which was verging on being full (around 6000 songs, at varying bitrates).. After going back to my old 128mb MPIO FL100 player that I had before, I realise how much I miss having all the music with me, and how much I hate having to recode selected songs so I can fit more than 5 or 10 on (can fit around 20 songs if I recode them at 96kb, would be more but around half the songs are over 6-8 minutes)

I was considering getting an iPod video, but alll (over 400gb icon_rolleyes.gif ) my videos are incompatible format, and I don't think I'd want to transcode and store the stuff to put on it, and not fit that much on it.

And with that proper video iPod possibly comming out soon, it'll drive the price of the iPod with Video down..

But, the only place I'd really use it is in a car, where I could just use my laptop.. *Shrugs*

- Ben
