i have a question about your anti aircraft stuff....

will they contain a Bloodhound II system?

Bristol Bloodhound

I think I can see a couple of them in RKSL´s signature :P

The Bloodhound is a bit too old for what i had in mind. I think what you've assumed to be a Bloodhound in the sig banner is actually the SA-6/Kub missiles.

but.......

i would still like to see the Bloodhound missiles in ofp...

even if they are a strategic "high altitude" missile system...

Your Nimrod, Harrier, everything I've seen while browsing through this thread look absolutely top notch! I saw the Harrier pictures on ofp.info, and was wondering what island was in the background? I especially like the airbase that's being overflown

Its very similar to the SA-2 Gainful and SA-5 Gamon Systems.  I really don’t think I’ll have the time to make a Bloodhound but if anyone want to make one I’ll happily give them some decent reference pics I took at the Imperial war Museum.

The island is RKSL Test Island 1 - i'm going to clean it up and remove some of the 3rd party addons used in it and release it at the end of the week.

The terrain is very sparse and good for aircraft ops. Its a 512x512 map including some part finished Hangers and a few bits of airport structures, HAS, revetments etc.

The base you can see is the Western Desert base.  In the East of the main island is a huge Airbase in the same layout as the RKSL Runway Texture pack 1.

There were some screenshots posted somewhere - i'll post some shots in a day or so.

how about your c-130 ? or was it DKM who were making them . .  confused_o.gif

I made it - DKM Jaguar is Texturing it and UNN is scripting it. Unfortunatly we are still a way off creating a viable cargo system. Depending on the release date for ArmA we may get chance to release it. If not it will be released fro ArmA at some point.

Cool, cheers for the reply. When you say you'll be clearing the island of 3rd party addons, I hope this doesn't include the nice runway textures, HAS and anything by YOU?

If the island is his and the addons are his, how would they be third party?

Hahahah, I had the same thing with the airbase. Looking very realistic. As do other addons. Im also still working on RAF Laarbruch.

We are going to see some nice addons in a few weeks/months! yay.gifyay.gif

We are proud to present another WIP video of the harrier cockpit systems.

It is intended as a brief insight into the flight and warning systems we are building into the Harrier family of addons intended for release into both OFP and eventually ArmA.

harvidsplash.jpg

PRIMARY DOWNLOAD - RKSLSTUDIOS.INFO

SECONDARY DOWNLOAD - GOTF.NET

It's 53.8mb so I apologise to all those 56kbers out there.

Again please note this is NOT a final product it’s only the DEV Testing platform. The final version is still in work so none of the textures or models should be considered final.

Hehe, nice idea about that low-level flight indicator smile_o.gif

Thanks, there was a few other things involved in the HUD but the CCIP bombsight proved too inflexible without a heavy scripting solution so we dropped it.

we have a few more tricks to reveal later on with the Threat Warning system etc. Hopefully we'll surprise a few more people.

That looks f**king awesome! Seriously, I think this could be the single most outstanding thing I've seen for OFP over the last five years. Keep it up, Rockape thumbs-up.gif

I hope FLK mod harriers will be controlled in this way...

They will likely use a version of our VTOL scripting.  Just how much they will take from the GR7 is not  known right now.

nener.gif  You cant have it…yet!

I just thought I’d add a few questions and answers that came out of a few conversations I’ve had with people today.  Below are the cleaned up and more understandable responses:

Q1)  You’ve made something so complicated that its just not going to be useable, what were you thinking?

A1) First of all it is very usable.  Its no different from any plane when flown by the AI.  But when its flown by a player, well it’s a different tool than most people are used to.  I asked a lot of people what they wanted/expected of a Harrier addon.  They all (1 person objected) said they wanted a realistic Harrier.  With limits and complications, once you get over the initial shock at the controls its a lot of fun to fly.

Q2) Why OFP?  Why not a flight sim?

A2) OFP is unique in that you can cooperate with ground based units.  And if you get shot down, you bail out and then you are trying to escape and evade until you can get rescued.  You can steal a vehicle and get “homeâ€.  Or take a tank and go on a rampage deep into enemy territory.  You cant do that with a Flight sim, its OFP’s flexibility that makes a realistic COOP so much fun.

Q3) So are all your aircraft going to be this complicated?

A3) No, not all.  The Harrier is unique among aircraft with the VTOL and engine temp issues.  I don’t see the need to add engine temp scripts to any other sort of plane.  But for the Harrier, it’s a major part of the operation.

Q4) It looks like a high poly script heavy monster.  Won’t it kill most older pc’s?

A4) Well all the scripts are written and optimised by UNN.  I think he’ll be the first to tell you he doesn’t have a bleeding edge machine (if I win the lottery im going to buy him one though).  So far from the tests we’ve done most PC’s seem to be able to handle it very well.  There are no huge looping scripts and there appears to be no huge performance drops in any of the test groups.

The model meshes aren’t that bad either, with the highest being not much more than a BAS UH-60.  Texture wise the final version bar the weapons should be on a single 2048x2048 tile so it shouldn’t be too bad.

Q5) How do you see this being used in game then?

A5) Well I’d like it to be used sparingly.  Harriers usually only operate in pairs.  I don’t see the point of making a mission with swarms of planes.  It’s not realistic unless you are the USAF.  I see the harrier as a “Hero unitâ€.  Something you see rarely but makes a bit difference to the outcome.  But that of course means you need a counter force to balance it out, which is where the Fire Control System for the SAMs come in.

When I started the Harrier i wanted to make something that could be used in MP on a smallish island  and be fun to use and attack.  This started off a whole load of other projects the SAM systems etc  (all of which are still on the slow burner and linked into the Harrier in various ways).  This project is one part of what we’re hoping will be a more interesting and realistic single and multiplayer capability [see the first page of this thread]

Q6) So will you make all the aircraft cockpits this realistic?

A6) we’re only adding stuff that adds to the gameplay.  Flight instruments and digital HUDs help the realism and add to the game without going overboard.  But you don’t need things like fuel management and authentic startup sequences.

We want to make something fun, practical and very useable.  But at the same time realistic.  That’s the goal for all of our projects.  I hope this helps people understand where we’re coming from and what we’re aiming for.

thankyou for those, very nice to read smile_o.gif

sounds like a groundbreaking project.. (one small step for the community, one giant leap for Operation Flashpoint)

That video is fucking brilliant!

The whole addon is brilliant actually!

This might be THE best addon for OFP!

For me it definatly will be, that stuff with the carrier is fantastic. The water and the hovering is VERY realistic which is great. And well with some textures and those MFD's it will look super im sure!

and a side note

SFP mod has got a UAV which has a camera which you can point at a certain area and it will follow that area with the camera. Would such a thing be implemented in the Harrier for simulating LGB targeting display? < Im sorry if this came up earlier in the topic... huh.gif

Great work on this for sure! thumbs-up.gifthumbs-up.gifthumbs-up.gif

The airbase looks nice, and if its alpha then Im certainly going to change a few things. Mainly trees though! Want some large pines. Amazing how elite the harrier will be. Especially with the airbase with it, and eventually the carrier... thumbs-up.gifthumbs-up.gif

My take on a couple of the points raised.

Quote[/b] ]Q4) It looks like a high poly script heavy monster.  Won’t it kill most older pc’s?

There are a lot of scripts running, some of them are not as efficient as they could be. This started out as an experiment, so getting a working version was the main priority. Now the concept is proven, a much more sophisticated\efficient system is being planned for Arma, utilising all the new features Arma will provide.

But saying that, Rock is correct. I do have a really crappy PC, but it runs better than some addons, already released and accepted by the community. The bulk of the scripts are player orientated, so you will only ever have one instance running on a single client. The AI will be handled differently, allowing us to concentrate on the dynamics rather than effects.

Quote[/b] ]Q2) Why OFP?  Why not a flight sim?

A2) OFP is unique in that you can cooperate with ground based units.  And if you get shot down, you bail out and then you are trying to escape and evade until you can get rescued.  You can steal a vehicle and get “homeâ€.  Or take a tank and go on a rampage deep into enemy territory.  You cant do that with a Flight sim, its OFP’s flexibility that makes a realistic COOP so much fun.

Yep, as far as I'm concerned nothing comes close for Combined Arms. The Harrier is only a small part of a much larger system, that will allow a single player to wage war across Air,Land and Sea. IMHO It's unique abilities will play an important role in OFP, bridging the gap between the practicalities of Helicopters verses Fixed wing aircraft. Having a small learning curve, is a small price to pay for that.
