i did some thinking and what i came up with ?

hmm... is it possible that ppl who have problem with sending PM and are registered on these forums, have some strange problem with asking for something they think, they should get for free even without asking for it ?

strange, becouse even when i go to store and want to pay for something i still need to ask for it.....

and asking for something is such a problem ?

helping me gathering stats is a problem ?

Lets think about this one.

You walk into a store, you ask for something because you need to pay for it.  If you were just to pick up whatever you wanted and walk out it would be considered a crime, hence why you ask.

Now, an Operation Flashpoint addon is free, yes, thats right, its FREE.  So people may download and go and play with it as they please.  Not to be restricted by some ignorant, immature addon maker.

It's too bad that this "addon discussion" has become nothing more than a pro/con password PM debate and not much else.

I dunno, maybe someone finds all this amusing but its a bit of a waste.

If an addon maker limits his addon to a few selected people, adds a password which has to be requested or makes it totally free for any to modify and release as their own addon, is his choise. Of course limits like these will reduce the amount of people who uses it but as long as addon maker is pleased with it, he has every right to do so.

It's not that different to our server. We have a password which can be obtained by sending us a PM.

I hope everyone who took the time to post in this thread whingeing about passwords realises that in the time it took them to post they could have pm'd offtime a fair few times

I for one dont see the problem with the passwords, Offtime has his reasons, what does it matter to you the user?

You have to spend 30 seconds more writing a PM before you can use the addon. Oh noes! what will you do before messing about on desert island for 5 mins?

It is my experience that for the vast majority of those people still playing missions that they will take the 5 or 10 mins needed to sort them out. Afterall, they went out and searched for the missions on the scary scary internet, i'm sure a few mins here and there for a PM wouldn't make any difference to the process.

It is my opinion that you people really need to get a grip and stop expecting stuff to be force-fed down your proverbial throats.

Nice addon Offtime, one of if not THE best soldier model in OFP at the moment, kudos to you my friend.

Offtime could make any request he wishes as a condition of using this addon but he's been quite reasonable, it's just because people think they have a right to his work without needing to do anything even typing one word, and that because most other addons don't ask this, he can't either that is making people complain. It is quite simple, ask him for the password and use his addons, or don't. Where is the 3rd option of "create post saying the same thing over and over because you can't have your toys"?

The sooner people realise that if an addon has a condition they should follow it, the better. Then again, when conditions like "Please don't modify my addons without permission" get disregarded, Offtime's request was always going to be met with criticism. It's almost frowned upon for an addon maker to protect their own work, want any kind of recognition for it (because "thank you" is ass kissing, apparently). It looks like addon makers are supposed to beg the players to download their addons.

As for missions, I think that someone will probably download the addons then want to play the missions, not download the addons to play the missions.

Anyways, I dont see the benefit in having a passworded addon as it can be passed around like a dirty needle or even bruteforced if it's weak enough.

Some of you people make me sad...

Offtime took hours and hours of his own time to create this addon. Probably because HE wanted to play as a GROM operator. But then, he let you download it. He LET you download it, when he could of kept it in his own personal addon folder. All you have to do is take 15 seconds to type "May I please have the password to your GROM soldiers". Whats the big deal? Oh, you have a busy life? So what, PM, go continue with your busy life, and when you have time to play OFP again, bam, new toy.

Personally I can't blame Offtime for his reactions. Some of you may call him immature for it, but look at the posts directed towards him. No one is critizing the little whiners that wont take the 15 seconds to use some excellent units. It's your choice guys, if you want to use the stuff, get the password. If your not willing to PM Offtime, then DON'T USE IT!

I've always thought the missions excuse was lame. People say "dont put too many addons in your mission or people wont download it!". If people are willing to download your mission, they're willing to download the addons. The majority of the people on the net have broadband internet (although I don't), and it takes them a few minutes to download these addons. I have dialup and downloaded every single addon for the addon intensive Dynamic Afghanistan. It took awhile, but I feel it was worth it. Not only do you get to play a wonderful mission after downloading the addons, now you have more addons! And with the more addons you have, the less you'll eventually have to download(as you will potentially have downloaded the addon for a previous mission). Then you'll also have more addons to use in the editor on those 5 minute missions in desert island.

Now I've read every post in this topic, all 9 pages, every single post. I saw why Offtime was doing this. He has answered the "why". It doesn't suprise me that you people are too lazy to send him a PM, when you wont even read the topic to try and answer your question before posting. And I'm sure you'd be the first people to shout "use the search" when a n00b asks a question.

I assume from Offtime's comments that he is checking on ACTUAL interest in these units. Sure a download counter would work, but how many of those downloads would be 5 minute editor missions? If you send Offtime a PM, you geniunely want to use these units in OFP. You either want to see the excellence in quality, or have been wanting Polish units forever! He has listed 4 forums for you to PM him in, that should be enough to cover most active OFP members. If not, it's free to register, it takes less than 5 minutes. Plus, any news site could easly mention that these new units are password protected and require a PM to the author from the following 4 forums... Right there is all the information needed to get them going.

Personally, I hope Offtime continues to release his work in this fashion. I like that it pisses off ungrateful bastards   I also hope that you people realize that Offtime isn't the one with the ego trip, you are.

This inspires thoughts of releasing an addon that requires a photocopy of your drivers license, and uneditted video footage of yourself at a family function... also, a recording of your voice saying a phrase of my choosing. It would have to be SOME addon, but I think I'm up to the task

But no matter how many times you say it, its no less true.  Until people start to respect the addon maker's right to release stuff how he wants it'll keep happening.

Offtime, excellant work mate but the only problem i have (the same as the John Doe kit) is the arms when prone.  They get squished into impossible sizes.  Any plans to fix that?

well, fixing that with remodeling or setting different selections will couse different problems

model is not perfect, but i did what i could and its optimalised for this pack of anims.

in my opinion the only step i could make to create better soldier is to create completly new set of animations with completly new set of selections....

at least thats what i think with my current ammount of knowledge.

Guys, guys.... look you don't understand. Its NOT about DEMANDING an addon and expecting the world for free.

Its a simple logistics matter for mission makers in which there is a simple unecessary step for downloading. Whats great about OFP is that there are tons of great addons to download without that extra password hassle. Its similar to missions that require a dozens of addons to download. If I think its way too many addons and would force me to totally reorganize my mod folders to play them, then I simply skip the mission and move on even though it may have been a fantastic mission. I know many players who do the same thing. In theory, yes, looking up an addon and PM'ing for a password on the "scary scary" internet is not a huge demanding task. However realistically, many many OFP players simply won't do it.

Offtime, look if you plan on releasing a non-password update later with a Polish pack or as a standalone addon, then thats ALL you had to say instead of letting this stupid arguement over passwords go on and on.

Then I would be MORE THEN HAPPY to PM you and ask for a password along with MUCH praise for your work.

But anyhoo...again, people, its not about wanting a free work of art on a silver platter. Its just simple mission making logistics for me at least. If I just wanted to give this addon a go in the mission editor for a bit and shoot up some stuff, then yeah I would have no problem with a password.

But if you're a serious mission maker...then yeah big problem if you want a large number of players to play your mission.

Everyone's always complaining about the lack of missions for all the great addons in OFP. Things like this are just one more reason why there are not many high quality missions.

Anyhoo... Offtime, I hope that you will at a later date release a version without the password because as someone else mentioned, the password itself skews you data if you are using it for statistical purposes (and yes I saw someone mention that early on but that still didn't make any sense to me). I agree with what someone posted earlier concerning the use of a download counter. That would be much more effective in gathering statistics.

At any rate... please take that as constructive criticism and not as whining.

Maybe read the post from Miles Teg once more, it's not about asking for the password, the problem is making missions with it and then everyone who wants to play the mission must run after Offtime or better said, when using that addon in a mission it's Offtime who decides who can play the mission and who don't, not the author of the mission.

I'm still waiting for the password and while Offtime can post comments here, he obviously is not able to handle all the requests on all forums.

I don't care if I get the password or not. It's not the end of the world if I can't check out the addon since there a dozens of other high-quality addons out there from addonmakers which don't force their users to run after them.

Fantastic units OFFTIME, they are a crapload of fun to play with along with the other Polish units out there right now! It's fun as hell playing with polish units and other Euro units rather then the usual US vs Russia scenario. OFFTIME, will future weapons pack updates include an AG36 for the G-36's included???

PS it is getting rather boring trying to read about this addon on the boards when 2/3's (might be too high of a #) of posts are about a damn password. To those that won't use the addon because of the password, well you are missing out on one HELL of an addon.

So, Teg, basically, what you are saying is that people are entitled to this addon because it sucks to wait... which is the same thing everyone else is saying. Your logistical argument is a nice face-plate, and it seems that you are arguing for more than just yourself, but I believe that mod makers rights outweigh end user privilages.

It's odd that if Offtime was selling this thing, his rights would almost assuredly be respected, because he could pursue legal action for a tangeble loss of income based on piracy. He's giving it away for free and it all of a sudden becomes too difficult to respect his rights.
