That probably wouldn't work too well either, you would still have to deal with pitch and roll, and I am not sure but I bet it would still get messed up going over bridges.

Most TANKS won't work too well with high pitch/roll y'know.

If You'd only make an MG with montage thingie and the sliding ring would be on the tank moddel then it would propably look OK. Sth. like that:

Tanks usually don't do downhill biking.

They won't tilt more then a chopper.

But oh well, You're free not to try if You don't want to.

Just to echo Rikki Tikki's suggestion, would an "enhanced" orbit script work?

I see this as an AI-only add-on. The player would click on the map designating the target area, and the gunship would orbit that area, following a lot of "...goto <x,y,>..." orders. Perhaps using one or more Game Logics setPos at specific points to describe a circle and at specific time intervals to enable and maintain the appropriate bank to the left.

Yep, that would be easy to script and even make flexible, height, radius, speed. So looks like my "Virtual Bomber" addon now has a brother, "Virtual Gunship" biggrin_o.gif

Already been done, Gecko, HateR_Kint and the MCAR crew already did a MG Commander on a M1A1 (you can even DL it to play) ..... And yes, it does suffer from the problems you describe Panda BUT this version suffers much less from potential "Bridge" problems, thanks to some script refinement by Gecko (not that we're really worried about Gunships crossing bridges wink_o.gif )

A ACH47 is still VERY do-able and probably will work in MP.

I believe this script should be exactly what you are looking for.

Keep up the good work. I'd love to see a non-scripted AC-130 in OFP. And seeing how these things are still in use today, it would be great for more than just Vietnam-era missions.

You have to realize that this technique is still very limited, and still, the biggest problem is pitch and roll. The pitch of the guns will allways remain at 0, you can't change them, same goes for roll, so this causes problems on aircraft which are constantly changing pitch and roll. This and many other issues that occur when you setpos static MGs onto vehicles prevent this from being anything more than a few "bubble" shaped turrets on large, straight flying vehicles. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure your WWII planes could be made like this, but you probably won't be happy with the results. confused_o.gif You best wait till ArmA...

I'm a little more optimistic.

For example, a rear-gunner on a Stuka, Il-2 or Dauntless

_should_ be possible. It would look a bit 'broken' at some angles,

obviously, but it's a small price to pay, IMHO. Note that the

Backfire (and B-52, I think) static MG's are only modelled as a

pair of barrels, so there's no 'carriage' that could look out of place.

Larger planes, like B-17's, aren't really going to pitch and roll

that much anyway, so maybe the problems wouldn't be as

obvious.

The other problem is the one Gnat's already mentioned -

stopping AI gunners from shooting down the carrying plane.

This _could_ be solved with some FireGeoLOD adjustments.

Alternatively, at the cost of some detail, couldn't the guns themselves have no visual appearance at all, serving only as a firing point for a defensive weapon? That would avoid the issue of having the guns appear out of place, albeit at the cost of being static on the aircraft itself.

Hi,

for the Lancaster, B17 and all the other ww2 airplanes I am using a bloody simple trick. The gun is fixed on the model and a static MG is connected via transport script. The static MG is invisible only the muzzle flash is visible. So the airplane can enter dogfight and shoot with its tailgunners.

This is easy and primitive, but good enough if you wont play the tailgunner. There are still some problems:

AI is lousy, tailgunner need a lot of time to get its fire solution and in this time the attack has been done. Rotation within the fire angle is always to the smaller angle, even when it is blocked by the max values for rotation. So you can "enable" the tailgunner by suddently changing from the right to the left side when flying an attack on a bomber. So often it is possible to shoot out two or three bombers in a 12 bomber formation before tailgunner will get "angry" and you have to brake away.

There is no decent C-130 models to attach it to, so until one is "loaned" to me I don't have the time to take the AC-130 further.

Sorry, I meant PUBLIC C-130 models.

If Hawk or DKM could use a Gunship version then I'll help out, but I'm not going to ask them now because 1) I'm working on other projects 2) about to go on 2 weeks holiday.

With some help from Korax and Q the AI speed limited problem is now fixed. notworthy.gif

So now in general there are no problems with an ACH-47 implementation .... just got to get creative to bypass the "shooting itself" AC-130 roll issue.

Many ways including removal of anything that can be hit on the left wing (ie no geo or fire geo for that wing) through to a script that detects the roll degrees (via another wingtip proxy) and shuts the guns down until it roll back.

erm ... for ofp, it's possible to turn a mg 360° degrees in any direction ... like that ... but to force a mg just to turn around 90° u need to write a proper config // script. (also the upper syntax is there [remember, they need to shoot out of a chopperwindow on the ground ...])

if u defined it in a config // script it should work without any issues!!! inlove.gif to see them high in the air rofl.gif

ps: i'm very proud of the 20mm's modelled from scratch ... they look nice, though ...

AUSHILFE did it!!!!

he only need to take little adjustments, e.g. the muzzles smoke.

but it worked quite well with the cargo gunners, thx to gnat.

he has also made a ac47 (spooky dc3), he used the mapfact dc3, so we need their permission to modify it, hopefully someone of 'em see this thread to let US know wink_o.gif

btw. who is able to send me a pack of good vietnam soldiers? want to modify 'em for a new pack, containing probably a lot of vietnam era addons... we only miss the permissions ... so guys, plz pm me for the soldiers!!!!!!

If it works ok, you can send it to me so we can add it to VTE, we already have permissions from MapFact to use their DC3 models. No need for you to get any soldiers and release this separately.

i waited 3 years for the f**king airpack. now we have vte, kool, but i downloaded the first version and it didn't fit me! and y u want the old aircav soldiers from the sec. nam pack? we just want to do a nam pack 3 till the first nam pack was out, so we talked about that with stt and he said: "good damn job what u want to do" ... but for now, i'll need their soldiers to remodel and retex them (that u can use it also in the photography thread nener.gif )

so, who is able to give me his model?
