Best helicopter flight models

the lynx reached around 400Km/h.... but it was an unarmed, empty, with a special engine and specially designed high-speed rotor blades version...

it climb too fast i would say but it's a problem for all chopper in ofp, ...wich is not a chopper simulator

At least the lynx was the only chopper to do a backflip (if it still isn't the only one).

It's not called a backflip, it's called a loop ;)

I've seen the Eurocopter Tiger perform a loop too so the Lynx aint the only one that can do it.

And as Oeil2Lynx said, it's a special variant of the Lynx called the G-Lynx that's the fastest chopper in the world, the operational AH.Mk.7 only has a top speed of 263km/h IIRC, which is slower than the Blackhawk.

Still the best chopper in the world (IMO) though! biggrin_o.gif

Where you saw Eurocopter Tiger doing loop in OFP?

If you are talking real life MI-28, V-80 should be able to do loop

Can FLK's Lynx do loops in OFP? I can't say I've tried. I've managed a few with BAS' Littlebirds though.

Nope, the Lynx can do a backflip, I've seen one do it.

It hovers then flips over backwards, a loop requires forward momentum smile_o.gif

Thats a loop though, not a backflip, loops have foward motion, Backflips are from a hover position.

Stumbled across this thread by accident - normally only lurk on the "A&M - C", "A&M - D" and OFP photo threads.

Helicopters in Op Flashpoint?  Well, I think Jinef said it best - if you want helicopter simulation then go for some kind of FS programme.  There are restrictions in the way Flashpoint (in its present form) handles energy management that mean it's not a true rotary-flight simulator.  As has been mentioned already, there are many different factors (Mass, rotor-head design, etc) that add-on makers can use or tweak to improve their model, but ultimately they come up against the built-in limitations of the game engine.

My biggest bugbear has to be the terrain-following auto-height part of the programme.  If I'm in a real heli - even one with massive amounts of inertia in the head like the Bell 214B - I can make it descend within 2-3 seconds and have a significant (3,000 fpm+) rate of descent on within 6-7 seconds.  However, in OpFP I find that - even when I've anticipated the need to reduce collective miles before the LP or firing point - I nearly always need to go for the oxygen mask as the heli zooms skywards like a homesick angel.

So, helicopters in OpFP?  For me - a necessary part of the battlefield simulation, but imperfectly realised.

HOWEVER!!! (There's always one of those when I opine; I have this sad habit of wanting to see the other side's point of view...) - I think there are some FANTASTIC helicopters knocking around the OpFP world!  To start with, the sounds in the basic BIS Chinook took me straight back to the 9 years/ 3000 hours I had on those; the handling wasn't too bad either (previous points notwithstanding; I just grew used to the game-engine limitations).  Then seeing the BAS improvements was mind-boggling - stunning programming and modelling.  Martin's Bell 47 is a lovely piece of work; haven't spent too much time getting shot at in PrepH's 212 so can't confirm the weakness, but I do enjoy just being around the model!  The French helis - I won't pick any individual types out above the others - are all beautifully done.  As for the NO Mi2 and Mi26 - fantastic! The Lynx model (apart from the droopy blades) is good, but as I never liked the real aircraft much I don't spend too much time in the Flashpoint version! Haven't therefore had time to form an opinion on the rate of climb...

I've been very lucky in that I'm paid to do my main hobby - for 29 years now I've been given money to go places and do things I'd never have experienced otherwise, in expensive toys that other people pay for and maintain!  I've flown and taught in articulated-head (Whirlwind, Wessex), Semi-rigid head (Lynx), teetering head (B205, 206, 214B, 212, 47), double head (Chinook) and NO head (EC135 - blades are attached directly to the mast)-types, plus sundry others.  I've operated tail-rotor, twin-rotor and NOTAR (MD902 - whatever happened to THAT OpFP model?).  Eight thousand eight hundred hours (nowhere near the real high-timers), and I still learn something new every time I strap myself into an aircraft.

In my frequent long rest-periods sat around on my big aged backside, I've found that I can keep my synapses snapping by turning to computer games - we older people need stuff like this to keep the eye-hand co-ordination up to speed.  I've played CS Condition Zero, Rainbow-something, Sim City and its offshoots, the Close Combat series and most recently Rome-TW, but the one prog I keep coming back to is Op FP.  OK, I'm really a frustrated PBI (poor bloody infantryman) at heart - but I have to say that its the basic game PLUS the tremendous support it gets from the modding/ addon-making/ FAQ-writing/ site-hosting people out there which makes me want to stay with it.  Not (primarily) the helicopter bits - I can get all that at work - but the programme as a whole.  Holistic gaming - blimey!

Right - back to the Mi26 to see if I can hover over that flaming truck and pick it up first time...  Oh, and if the link still works you should be able to see Lynx backflips (from outside and inside) on this Blue Eagles video.  Rather a large file.  I wish the young lady wouldn't sit there masticating throughout the entire routine...

ThudBlunderQ8 - thanks for your comments. That's exactly what I was hoping for, an evaluation from someone like yourself with plenty of RL experience.

I suppose I've come to expect so much from Ofp that I lost sight of the limitations of the game engine. It has been amazing over the years, and all the addon makers have been fantastic.

The responses from all of the guyys made me really think, to the extent that I'm now spending time flying helis in FS2004 (using VATSIM and www.hovercontrol.com) and X-Plane 8.0.

I'll still be enjoying Ofp (including the helis), but I'll accept the limitations and just get on with slotting the bad guys.  smile_o.gif
