MGS3 Snake Eater 'mod'

after spending alot of time playing MGS3 and really enjoying it (it really is one of the best games ever made) and also identifying the major problems with the game: script and camera, i decided that a jungle combat sim, which takes in the high concept of MGS3 (sneaking through a jungle) would be superb and would work wonderfully in the OFP engine.

from a small bit of research, it seems nearly all the assets are already available, so the main work is assembling them to form a tight series of missions.

my idea is not to retell the mgs3 story, neither is it to include the camo index and survival elements, but its to concentrate on the jungle combat.

neither will there be boss fights or a final battle against a Metal Gear, but it will be heavily scripted and focused.

it will all be about the set pieces and co-operation.

of course, this will be my first 'mod', i have created several missions for friends, which have been warmly recieved and i have experience working as a games designer, so im not a total n00b smile_o.gif

although i would like to be able to turn to the community for some help and guidance in the more technical areas of the editing, unit scripting and so on.

and of course, some suggestions on what elements you guys would like to see contained.

i shall add a complete list of the available addons i will be using, i have yet to decide on a jungle island, Tonal is wonderful, but it will need to be 'stripped down'

and suggestions?

one question which i cant seem to find an answer on:

it is possible to increase the waepon loadout on your soldier?

i.e. having an RPG-7, assualt rifle, shotgun, several grenades and a pistol in their inventory?

or is there a hardcoded limit?

i don't think you can,, tho u can have a back pack that can carry alot

now thats pretty cool and it will fit in with the 'mgs' thing.

thank you for the tip.

i have noticed that alot of the 'mods' fail due to the majority of the mod needs to be created from scratch and that the creator of the mod cannot create the addons.

as i stated before, all the addons needed for this project appear to be available, even those 'flying platforms'!

if i really wanted to i could place a "metal gear" type robot in there, but i find them ridiculous Ü

I've noticed on Tonal, the AI seems to have a bit of an advantage in spoting you through the jungle plants, not sure how it is on some of the vietnam maps though/

Eh, OFP's engine isn't for MGS, since AI have way too good vision and are way too "primative" to do much with the "alert" levels. And of course another thing is the solo mission part. OFP is way better for squad based action, not that solo missions are bad (alot are good), but MGS is all about 1 guy taking on a whole freaken army, in OFP, thats pretty damn impossible, and thats a good thing cause it keeps the games realism high (or should I say at the top  wink_o.gif  ) I think its just cause MGS is too similar to splinter cell, and well you should go read my response to that thread wink_o.gif

the jam RPG ammo takes up less in magazine slots than the original rpg rounds smile_o.gif

so you can have as many rpg's as rifle mags, seen a script somewhere at ofpec forums that allowed for more than one rifle also tounge_o.gif

ok 2 main weapons max is fine

but u cant carry as much weapons as snake in rl!

Ummm....don't have anything to say about the ofp part, exept that sneaking in ofp is not my favorite thing to do.

well let me reply to the naysayers and to you first:

the subtitle to the 'mod' (notice the quotation marks?) is SCRIPTED MULTIPLAYER JUNGLE WARFARE

its not about the sneaking, its about the combat. have you played MGS3?

no, its not impossible, and once again did you read the subtitle?

i read that thread and the first reaction i had to it was slight shock at the amount of negativity from the replies. no help or even small pointers, just people saying its all impossible.

perhaps its the concept of mods in the community's mind?

in my mind, the mod is still going to operation flashpoint, nothing is going to change that. but it is possible to add some other elements, structure the missions tighter and have an end product which is enjoyable...

do you see my point?

so rather than just say: "impossible" perhaps you could provide some help and tips?

perhaps the majority of mods wont be completed, but that doesnt mean that people cannot have fun trying.

thats correct, but this isnt a real-life mod per se. its about enjoying the combat and the mission and doing some problem solving and fighting quite a lot of enemy soldiers.

think Action OFP.

well, i agree with you, the sneaking is crud and doesnt work well in ofp.

but once again, its scripted multiplayer jungle WAREFARE.

mgs3 is superb, perhaps the best game i have played in the last 4years. its wonderfully structured and the last 2hours of the game are the some of the best in videogame history.

a tall tale? try it out you wont be dissappointed.

although it does have one of the worst scripts in living memory and the camera will destroy your mind.

annnnnyways, i should have a screenshot or two for you guys soon, hopefully. im still trying to tie all this stuff together and to decide on the actual map/island.

First of all, don't call me an "a$$hole" I was only trying to better understand you.

Second, thats fine then, perfectly feasable, infact it sounds fun, maybe like vietnam even. But I don't see how it has anything to do with MGS3, thats the part that had me confused. Another thing is why its in addons and mods discussion, sounds more like a mission than an addon or a mod.

well you have been nothing but negative in this thread, but if you say you werent being an a$$hole for the sake of it, well thats ok by me.

to answer your 'comment' about the wrong category.

although most of the assets have already been created, some stuff will have to be created or tweaked.

ergo:

there you go, your answer is right there, YOU dont see it. but you have to think outside the box...

play the game and imagine what it would be like if it was all combat and minimal sneaking...

You can alter the AIs behaviour alot through some basic scripting. I´ve done that in some NAM-missions. Ex to force the AI to stand up in stealth mode / slow makes them "stalk" and they are alert when they slowly are moving through the jungle. Very beautiful. Then when they know about an enemy set them to normal combat.

I love intense jungle-sneak-combat, especially coop smile_o.gif so I´m looking forward to the result!

Real easy use the Tony Ranger or Flash FK replacement guys using the CQB code on Tonal, or a good jungle map and never get anywhere cause they will zap your ass over and over again..

OR wait till JAson is out and leave him alone on the map. against 100 enemy.

whoever said OFP isnt good for MGS is wrong, should really check out the Hawk in Shadows/Nets missions.

has anyone tried the top ten nec bis comp missions there a mgs type mission there where u have to sneak past ai and secutity cameras!

- Opf can support sneaking missions. When scripting is involved, almost anything is possible.

- If ppl don't like MetalGearSolid where's the point posting in this thread ? As long as i can see there's no "Only realistic combat ideas" forum anywhere around here.

- If this is a thread to post finished work, where are the files to DL ?

- If this is a thread to search for help from scripters interested in sneaky missions, then it lacks a complete discription of what your ideas are. Don't call ppl *bum*holes just because they want more info on your ideas. If you dunno what you want, it's nobody's fault anyway.

- If this is an open discussion thread about sneaky missions i'd suggest to listen to ppl.

Only my opinion though.

Eh, AI can't be snuck up on, they have eyes in the back of their heads, and you can't script them to not see you, only not fire upon you, and the instant you tell them its OK to fire, they will allready be facing you and drawing their weapon.

There is a setting in the ccp file that grantes a bit better stealth ability, one of the reasons most snipers are very hard to detect, I can crawl up to eneiys often as a sniper and shove the rifle in their ear and smoke em. Once your dected its pretty hard to not get shot.. The black Oops guys are more stealthy than the normal soldier, Lasers seals in the flightsuits are sneaky as well.

I think this would be a kool idea.

I'm a big fan of the MGS series, although I still need to buy the new one... money!! crazy_o.gif

I think you should go for it. Just don't start swearing at people in the thread otherwise the mods will get involved blues.gifwow_o.gif
