5133p39 16 Posted March 15, 2005 Nice work with the Fenek, it looks good. But why the hell is the Aladin's range only 1500m EDIT: aha! i found that the Aladin's max. range is 5 Km - that's ridiculous, isn't it? Of what possible use can this be? ...i mean, you guys made pretty good addon, but can you tell me what is the practical use? (i mean in real world) ...i'm sorry for this little off topic, but i am really curious, and i didn't find any suitable information on the web (only something in german, and i am not very good with german language)
metalchris 0 Posted March 15, 2005 Well you have realtime battlefield surveillance
TeRp 1 Posted March 15, 2005 The ALADIN is an UAV. A vehicle meant for reconnaissance, most likely unknown to the enemy. Additionaly, these vehicles are unmanned. Do a google search for UAV. //edit: well, you can change the maximum control range of the ALADIN, it's mentioned in the readme.
5133p39 16 Posted March 15, 2005 yes i know what is Aladin, and i know what is UAV, and i even did a search on google - but i wanted to know what practical use can be UAV with so limited range? (i thought before, that it's range is something about 30Km) For reconnaissance 5 Km away? I can see there almost with my own eyes, i don't need a plane for that :-) ...and we are talking about 5Km maximum - with some harder terrain it could be much less, if i am not mistaken. It seems to me that this is rather expensive toy than anything else, and that's why i am so curious whether the German army really uses this and when and for what purpose. Again: sorry for OT, if this message bothers anyone, then just delete it, and i won't ask again.
TeRp 1 Posted March 15, 2005 Well, this is a rather small UAV. It's not meant for being used for long ranges, there are other UAVs for this kind of job. Well, you can see 5km, okay. But not when there are trees or houses in your field of view or at night.
low light 0 Posted March 15, 2005 Hey 5133p39, I think that small UAV's are mainly used in squad based missions and in real life they are used to provide a 'bird's-eye-view' on an area of operation. An example of the Aladin's use would be in scouting out a village prior to or during an operation by a squad (patrol/reconaissance). I would imagine that this type of UAV would be used by more specialist teams, though I may be wrong. It would be a hard target to hit (and spot); it's cheaper than a larger UAV (which need special arangements to launch and recover them); it's man portable (can be carried by a soldier); and would provide a squad with vital information, especially for [squad] command units, who can identify where their forces are and where possible enemy units are located (very useful in FIBUA/MOUT...etc). Â Hope this gives you an idea of how it could be used. @BW MOD: This a great addon and I love using it for mission intro's. Recently installed the game again, due to great addons and innovations. Looking forward to more from this amazing mod. Low Light
Guest Posted March 15, 2005 It can see about as far, if not further than a soldier with a pair of binoculars. I think it's just, as stated, for short range Recon taht can be used right then. Who wants to buy a B-52 with me and make the worlds largest UAV? ;)
