Wüstenfuchs, a member of mapfact.net, released his air combat mission "Iron Eagles" today:

maybe we can do that. do you want a coop with 2-3 players for west or east or a coop with 2-3 players for west and east?

looks great

too bad I can't handle those fast planes in OFP. IMHO they're too jerky and agile while going that fast. I keep smashing into the ground. but I'm not a good OFP-player at all, I'm sure crafted pilots will enjoy this mission.

Sounds great, I'll have to get it later though.

My joystick died an ugly death through rudder lock and I'm furious as hell.  It was a great joystick, but I guess through that last VERY intense furball I was playing at home finally put a quick end to my joystick.

No, I wasn't playing OFP or some great modern aircraft sim with my joystick, I was spankin the shit out of some Imperial scum in X-Wing Alliance on the hardest difficulty it has.

I had 60 TIE Fighters, 8 TIE Advanced (shielded), 18 TIE Bombers, a Star Destroyer, and a Super Star Destroyer against the 25 Alliance aircraft, including my 5 X-Wing squadron I commanded. Most fighters rushed all at once, others just came in waves.

First time I almost made it out of the mission, second time I did make it but my joystick bit the dust shortly after.  I haven't even got to the battle of Endor yet...

For any of you air combat noobs, that game on medium or hard difficulty is an excellent game to learn the VERY basics of air combat and the basics of managing furball fights with you alone against 3 or more enemies.

If you can learn how to avoid getting hit in X-Wing Alliance and how to square up a target and quickly dispatch him, you have learned some very basic fundamental skills.

if this mission is too easy for you (@havoc) or the plane is too fast for you (@redface) we can release a new one with footmunch's F-15E: this plane is not as fast as the F-18 by H&P and it is way harder to get through he mission alive (no jammer - good pilots play with jammer off anyway smile_o.gif ).

Hard, you're going to have to put 12 Su-27 Flankers in all directions pointing at me and firing from all sides before you'll be able to design a mission to shoot me down.

If I could do some OFP dogfights online, I'd show you all how its really done. A very select few (3 to 4) might be better than me, a small group probably might equal my talents (12 to 14), otherwise the rest of OFP players are just aircraft fodder.

As long as those countermeasure keep coming and I still have ammo, consider the poor suckers dead.

I prefer the F-16C Falcon, those Sidewinders come in handy more often since the AMRAAM's suck in close unless you catch a bandit correcting a turn to go the other way.

tounge_o.gif Hahaha.... does this mean you've never got the chance to fight against another human player ? If thats the case how do you know that your flying skills are so far superior in comparison to the other OFP players ?   biggrin_o.gif

(please don't get this wrong, just a Q)

Anyway with all those great Airplane-Addons out there it's a shame that there are so few missions that actually use them.

(Same problem as with any other addon sad_o.gif )

Also the missions from Wüstenfuchs were always some off the best OFP missions I've ever played, keep up the good work !

would you be willing to test a modification of Iron Eagles made by me?

make a screen of the stats in the end biggrin_o.gif

wow, i just played this mission and i reckon this is good clean family fun.

now...seriously, i died first time, second time i used jammer, shot down 3 su27 and 3 su25, i used my AI at danger\engage at will\fire settings...but i suspect while i engaged su27's it never did much (i could be wrong as i was extremely busy), but i saw it shoot down a load of su25's after all Flankers bit the dust.

What more can i say...this is a great map

smile_o.gif

Danke!

edit: that effect pack is amazing for air combat, great choice.

and heres a good clean kill tounge_o.gif

thank you smile_o.gif

to have an effective AI order him to kill the su-25s (via radio).

the AI gets sooner or later killed.

when i played it it was most times that i hunted the su-27s (they climb up fast and high) and my AI was hunting the su-25s around 800-900m until it died.

You wanna know how I'm this good, I've logged over 1200 hours in flight sims. First sim I played was Falcon 3, it was execellent for its time.  Most of my flight sim time was in Janes F-15 and Jane's F/A-18, some time in Fighter's Anthology, and some in other less worthy sims.

I've played and beaten both campaigns on Janes F-15 on maximum difficulty in all areas with only being shot down once, the only other time was when I lost an engine and was low on fuel, so I had to bail out over friendly airspace.  No I did not cheat and replay the missions, it punishes you for cheating by losing ordinance loaded on for that mission.

Janes F-15 is not easy, its just less technically intense than Janes F/A-18 but still a very detailed sim.

My mission success rate averages about 85% for Janes F-15, sometimes you just can't get it done right all the time and AI wingmen are far from reliable sometimes.

Janes F/A-18 is a different story, that campaign is one real b*tch to win effectively on maximum difficulty without certain visual aids.  You have to use multiple radar modes and also determine IFF which is not easy sometimes in the thick of it.

If you can beat the entine Janes F/A-18 campaign WITHOUT getting shot down more than twice on maximum difficulty on all areas and complete the campaign without cheating or losing the campaign, then you will deserve my full admiration and respect.  Of course I want proof of this by screenshots of your pilot record.

*Edit*

Also, regarding your question on why I think I'm better than the vast majority of other OFP players in OFP aircraft combat is: The targeting methods and function of the weapons is somewhat different but the core principle is the same. That is situational awareness.

Few people can effectively keep track of aircraft positions and behaviour in a 3D environment. They often forget or get confused when shit hits the fan, then they get distracted, disoriented, or lured into a dogfighting trap and get hosed off quick.

The OFP radar screen is an excellent tool for assisting situational awareness. It roughly tells me where and how far the enemy is without me having to target it or turn my head and look.

This is how one best proves his/her ability in air-to-air combat, that is how good is his/her situational awareness. Accuracy is an excellent skill to have, but it isn't worth sh*t if you can't survive for more than 1 minute in a dogfight.

man i have to try this mission ( posting from school )

my damn internet has been down for a couple of days now because of the freakin white crap snowing down everywhere i suspect tounge_o.gif

i have started up a bunch of fighter missions at home many months ago some of them made beta and got tested by a friend but he complained about lag sadly sad_o.gif well i have difficulty to make very small missions tounge_o.gif i love large scale fights.

I think the f-16c has a to big turning radius but its very nice graphics wise and has good weapons smile_o.gif yeah about number of players in coop i think 3-4 west and east players would work fine. having 10 people flying fast jets in mp makes things get real bad because of lag and some other factors like high poly adddons making the comp boggin down a little biggrin_o.gif I got a tip from a class mate how to fix the internet problem recently so it somehow reboot my connection unclesam.gif

can't wait to get home smile_o.gif just 5 hours left now before i finnish for the day.

ok, so we'll try to make a 3vs3 (or maybe 4vs3 cos the f/a-18 is not 100% balanced with the su-27 imho) out of it.
