NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Fans of Hardee's new "Monster Thickburger" may end up making "Big Mac" lovers look like waif-like supermodels.

As many fast-food restaurants cut back the fat and calories in their offerings, Hardee's Food Systems Inc. is betting that Americans are ready to sink their teeth into its new and improved "Monster" burger.

St. Louis-based Hardee's said its new burger boasts two 1/3-pound slabs of Angus beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of American cheese and some mayonnaise -- all on a buttered, toasted, sesame seed bun.

The "Monster Thickburger" will cost about $5.49, Hardee's said. But chowing down on the 1,420-calorie burger, which contains 107 grams of fat, will cost around $7 with fries and a soda.

"The (original) 'Monster Burger' was one of our most popular menu items," Brad Haley, executive vice president of marketing for Hardee's, said in a statement. "(But) it's now a 'Thickburger.'"

Many fast-food chains, including McDonald's (Research) and Wendy's International (Research), have tried to offer healthier menu items to cater to Americans on low-fat, low-carb diets.

But Hardee's said the "Monster Thickburger" is not all it has to offer on its menu.

"In about 30 days, we will be introducing a BBQ chicken sandwich that would only have 4 grams of fat and 300 calories. We just have a wide range of selections for everybody," Haley said.

Hardee's is owned by CKE Restaurants (Research) of Carpinteria, Calif., whose stock rose about 1 percent Monday.

I've heard the media call it a suicide snack, and a heart attack in a bun, and god knows what else it will be called.

My personal opinion would be to only sell it to healthy individuals who meet a certain Body Mass Index, measured by height and weight testers similar to those seen in shopping complexes...but that would be deemed discriminatory, wouldn't it! tounge_o.gif

But, as a healthy individual, I have to admit that the continuous downsizing of portions in regards to most foods has really shitted me off over the last couple of years. It's like, I have to pay the same for less because the masses (pardon the pun) can't control their diet to healthy levels.

So, what's your opinion on the burger, diets, and leading a healthy lifestyle in general?

So... delicious

I think it's sad the way people in the US let their bodies and their health go. There was a woman in Florida who was so overweight she couldn't get up. She died after spending years on a couch without moving and had to be surgically removed from the couch because it had actually meshed with her body. Just sad.

On the other hand, 1400 calories isn't really that bad...

If you're a professional triathlete and weigh 200 pounds.

Looks yummy, but the photos are always doctored. Will have to go give it a try. I'm suprised that a national chain would try this. Normally it's reserved for the local mom & pop's to make the jumbo burgers. There's additional business economics of marketing what is generally a niche product, as well as inventory and infrastructure. Plus you have to cook it a little different since the pattie is thicker than your typical one to meet health code.

When I go to Fatburger, I normally grab a double-kingburger and the greasy fries. The specs are about the same, 2x 1/3lb patties iirc. They do offer a triple, but a double is about as wide as my jaws seperate.

I've never had a problem with absurd portions, then again I have an aggressive metabolism for being a scrawny geek.

How much protein?

I would think some bodybuilders on 'mass season' could like that 'snack' wink_o.gif

No problem if you don't eat those every day.

Wish we had such monster burgers here too sad_o.gif

Can anyone actually finnish that?! I can only just about finnish off a Bacon Double Cheese burger meal at Burger King, and i doubt thats probably no more then half this monster. crazy_o.gif Still, if people wanna eat it, eat it. They'd probably only just go and order 2 of another burger anyway.

EDIT: Then again, this reminds me of the King size choc bars which some companies are stopping cause people are more encouraged to eat more when they have 1, XL/King bar, but if they have to buy 2 bars, they dont bother, so maybe not what i said about buying 2 burgers.

My snack of choice is a bacon, egg, sausage and tomato in a cob ( basicly a small loaf of bread )

Probably twice the calories of this burger , but i lead a very active life , and cycling over 60 miles during a week is average .. its a sad fact that some people are more prone to weight gain than others , but excersise is the key to a healthier life...not just choosing the right foods .

Try hooking up your computer to a dynamo running from an exercise bike ... biggrin_o.gif that should do the trick .

lol! I apologise. tounge_o.gif

But I can't help but wonder what is so delicious about a burger, and such a plain looking one at that? I'd rather a 'real meal' over fast food anyday.

The size of the thing alone is truly enough to put me off. Sure, I'd give it a try, but after that, it'd be something I'd probably only eat on either a bet, or for the sake of a drunken eating race!

I'll admit, I could eat a horse, ask for seconds and still feel hungry (much due to high metabolism and active lifestyle), but I don't do that because for one, it's expensive and two excessive!

When I do go for an 'oversize fatburger', it's at a 24hr Hungry George's, where instead of a soft drink, you get a beer, and instead of trays, there's plates. Kind of a grown ups fast food restaurant.

About the only bone I've got to pick with the fast food burger industry, is the downsizing of portions, and their efforts to turn themselves into something they're clearly not, like Cafés, Bakerys and Salad Bars with 'Healthy Choices' ...A waste of resources if you ask me.

I fail to see the relevance.

I would eat one, just for the fun of it....then spend the next month in the gym trying to cleanse my body of it crazy_o.gif
