hardrock 1 Posted October 11, 2004 hello folks, I'm about having a new computer the next week, but I still need some help. I know which components I want to buy, but in some cases there are several opportunities so please help me out. The computer won't be a super duper high-end macho wow computer, since I don't have that much money, but it should be a good investment into future. So here is what I chose: Harddisk: * <s>Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 80GB OR</s> * Samsung SpinPoint P80 80GB Ram: * Infineon 512MB PC3200 DDR400 CL3 OR * Kingmax 512MB PC3200 DDR400 CL2.5 Soundcard: * <s>Creative Sound Blaster Live! Player 5.1</s> Graphics card: * MSI FX5900XT-VTD128 GeForce FX 5900 OR * Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9800 Pro Mainboard: * ASUS K8V Deluxe, K8T800 CPU: * AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU cooler: * Arctic Cooling Silencer Ultra 64 OR * Zalman CNPS-7000B-Cu OR OTHER Power supply unit dunno I didn't choose the Athlon 2500+ or 2800+ version since it's only a bit cheaper but an older technology though. I also know that it's recommended to skip the Athlon64 technology and wait until the newest Athlons with dual channel blah blah get cheaper, but I need the computer NOW. So please help me out where there are several possibilities, the cost of the computer will be about 600-700 euros. thanks hardrock

mr burns 132 Posted October 11, 2004 i can for sure say that the zalman cooler rocks, it keeps the temps better down than anything else i had before and i don´t even hear it for graphic card i would choose the radeon but this is a question of personal taste.. or money
mr_rOk 0 Posted October 11, 2004 Dump the !Live Player, go for Audigy 2 instead-oem ones are pretty cheap these days...and yes there is a sound difference.
theavonlady 2 Posted October 11, 2004 OMG! I didn't notice the mention of that cursed SB Live. HR, stay far away from SB Lives! Do as Mr. rOk says or you'll be sorry.k
hardrock 1 Posted October 11, 2004 I just noticed that I don't even need a sound card, since it goes well with that onboard sound. So that's cleared for now
Badgerboy 0 Posted October 11, 2004 hello folks,I'm about having a new computer the next week, but I still need some help. I know which components I want to buy, but in some cases there are several opportunities so please help me out. The computer won't be a super duper high-end macho wow computer, since I don't have that much money, but it should be a good investment into future. So here is what I chose: Harddisk: * Get a Seagate. these come with a 5 year warrantee Ram: * Kingmax 512MB PC3200 DDR400 CL2.5 Soundcard: * <s>Creative Sound Blaster Live! Player 5.1</s> Graphics card: * Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9800 Pro Mainboard: * ASUS K8V Deluxe, K8T800 CPU: * AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU cooler: * Zalman CNPS-7000B-Cu Power supply unit Buy decent one. Cheap ones blow up and kill things. Go for a Sparkle, an Antec or Enermax. Avoid Qtec like the plague. I didn't choose the Athlon 2500+ or 2800+ version since it's only a bit cheaper but an older technology though. I also know that it's recommended to skip the Athlon64 technology and wait until the newest Athlons with dual channel blah blah get cheaper, but I need the computer NOW. mr_rOk 0 Posted October 12, 2004 It's your money after all but onboard sound sucks. Just like graphics. (speaking generally)

hardrock 1 Posted October 13, 2004 Thanks for the tips so far guys, but has anyone yet any advice concerning harddisks? I threw the IBM out of my list, I think it's obvious why. But I'm not quite sure if the Samsung is the best option concerning lifetime. Also can anyone guess if a 350W power supply is enough to serve this computer? hellfish6 7 Posted October 13, 2004 I've got an Athlon 64 3200 and I'm quite fond of it. I got it pretty cheap too.
hardrock 1 Posted October 13, 2004 Between does anyone know what difference it makes if a harddisk has 2MB or 8MB cache?
Placebo 29 Posted October 14, 2004 http://www.superwarehouse.com/shopGuides/harddrives/7.htm Quote[/b] ]CacheCache is additional memory that acts as a buffer between the system and the drive. Frequently accessed data is stored in the cache for quick access. Cache sizes vary from 512 KB up to 16 MB on some SCSI drives. Again, the more cache you have on your drive the faster your drive will run.
hardrock 1 Posted October 14, 2004 thanks a lot, so better 8MB cache.
Ironsight 1 Posted October 14, 2004 Between does anyone know what difference it makes if a harddisk has 2MB or 8MB cache? Yep, I used to have a 2 MB buffer on my harddisk (IBM "Deathstar") and now I have an 8 MB (Western Digital). Windows (actually a lot of applications) are a lot faster now . Also DON'T buy an IBM deskstar it is more like a "Deathstar"
Placebo 29 Posted October 15, 2004 I just bought a Maxxtor 160gb 8mb cache ATA133 drive, it will replace my Seagate 120gb 8mb cache drive which is going in my PS2
hardrock 1 Posted October 15, 2004 What are you trying to say? I'll probably buy a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Plus 120GB (ST3120026A) 8MB cache as it looks at the moment.
Placebo 29 Posted October 15, 2004 I'll probably buy a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Plus 120GB (ST3120026A) 8MB cache as it looks at the moment. Great drive, exact same model I'm taking out of my PC and putting into my PS2 http://www.ebuyer.com/custome....d=76965
