Quote[/b] ]Three Killed in Rush for IKEA Vouchers

JEDDAH (Reuters) - Three men were trampled to death in a rush to claim vouchers at the first IKEA furniture showroom in Saudi Arabia Wednesday, hospital officials said.

Sixteen shoppers were injured at the Sweden-based furniture store's showroom in Jeddah. Medics revived some 20 customers who had fainted in the crush.

The stampede was triggered by an offer for the first 50 shoppers to received $150 vouchers. An official at IKEA's Saudi agent said more than 70,000 people showed up at Jeddah.

Hospital officials said two dead were a Pakistani and a Saudi national.

IKEA is known for simple, reasonably priced products.

The world is just nuts! crazy_o.gif

IKEA is quite popular.

When the Ikea here in Breda (Netherlands) opened they already had to close it at 10 because there were too many people who wanted to go inside crazy_o.gif

Don't forget the thousands that show up everytime a damn Krispy Kreme opens.

"Gee. Why is America so fat?"

Course as far as I know no one has died in a rush to get the jelly donuts...

Yes. We have one solitary Ikea here in Israel, near Netanya. When it opened, it was also ridiculously packed but nobody got killed or injured.

Then again, we didn't have vouchers here. mad_o.gif

I love Ikea but my husband hates it everytime we drive by on the highway and I make him take the exit for some shopping. biggrin_o.gif

Just wait and see. Someone will come out with an OFP Ikea mod, with thousands of new objects.

Quote[/b] ]Like so many others, I had become a slave to the IKEA nesting instinct.

JACK (into phone):  "Yes, I'd like to order the Erika Peccary dust ruffles..."

OPERATOR:  "Please hold."

If I saw something clever like coffee tables in the shape of a yin and yang, I had to have it.  The Klipske personal office unit, the Hovertrekke home exer-bike. Or the Johannshamnh sofa with the Strinne green stripe pattern...  Even the Rislampa wire lamps of environmentally-friendly unbleached paper.  I would flip through catalogs and wonder "what kind of dining set defines me as a person?"

I had it all. Even the glass dishes with tiny bubbles and imperfections, proof they were crafted by the honest, simple, hard working people of...wherever.

One of my favourite scenes from one of my favourite films: Fight Club.

In our neck of the woods, we have much worse. crazy_o.gif

The only "furniture" we bought in Ikea are video box shelves. Otherwise, some pillows, linens, towels, kitchen accessories and a whole lot of little niknaks. smile_o.gif

But for students and young couples on a budget, it's not a bad place for furnishings.

Hi all

At the IKEA in south London they say there is a one way system in the aisles if you dont get what you want as you first go past you are swept along by the crowd and must start at the entrance once again.

Kind Regards Walker

Do they have bouncers to shove recalcitrant husbands back in the loop? tounge_o.gif

Bernadotte, I completely agree. biggrin_o.gif

I liked the way you could see the stuff filling up his appartment.

Most of my furniture is second hand actually, and I love it, my computer desk is from a company that went bankrupt, and it's loads better than those cramped "multimedia" desks where you don't have space for your mouse.

The only comparable crushes I can remember is when I went to see Metallica and Rammstein in the front rows, a lot of girls fainted, it was hot and being in between all those smelly people who you ussually find in multi-day festivals must've gotten to them. biggrin_o.gif

Where on earth is our favorite Intelligence KFOR Expert Analyst at a critical time like this? The one and only Ikea here in Seattle is laid out with as much sanity as the OFP AI shows in CQB collision avoidance. They bought two adjoining warehouses, repainted them, and I guess just shoved all the stuff in there in a drunken frenzy.

The the ironies get started across the street where in identical colors is the local NAPA auto parts warehouse. It is laid out very methodical so you can immediately find whatever part or tool you need. Now the mayor of the town where Ikea set up shop is having to rebut rumors of corruption and such after renameing the street out front Ikea Ave. Seems the truck manufacturer (Paccar, makes Kenworths and such) down the street and several other old-timers are taking it as a personal insult.

If you come to Britain then IKEA means cheap crap for some reason (don't ask). I've only been there once.

They can't get stampeded anyway. They're all round.

People are willing to trample each other in order to see what a new furniture store has on offer.............Right! crazy_o.gif

What were the conditions of the vouchers? Must be used within five minutes of store opening? rock.gifwink_o.gif

Hehe, some years ago they build a new IKEA in my hometown (the old shop was too small) and when they reopened they had a lot of special offers (like a wardrobe for 25 Euros). People camped in front of the shop to be the first to get one of those...

IKEA's great - good quality at good prizes. At least if you like pine wood and don't have two left hands... wink_o.gif
