Airplanes and choppers can submerge

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this is common knowledge, but I just found out that airplanes and choppers can submerge without the crew drowning. It is done by hovering just over the suface of the sea and then turning of the engine. The chopper will the slowly sink down to the bottom of the sea and when the altimeter stops you will be able to read the debt at that point. You will actually be able to look down at the chopper at the bottom of the ocean by using this tecnique: go to command view and zoom in all the way. Then try to look up. The lower edge of the screen will now see through the surface and down on the chopper standing on the bottom of the sea. If you cant see the chopper try zoomin out a little bit while stille trying to look up. I have already used this to find out how deep the ocean is at some points.

The deepest point I have measured until now was off the coast south of the small airbase island in the north-western corner of the malden map where i measured a debth of 97-98 metres (i recall reading somewhere that the altimeter in the game lists the altitude in metres - anybody knows anything about this?) After taking a couple of ather measurements I think that a debth of 50 metres is fairly normal for the "open sea". This means that you could actually have big ships and submarines in the sea witout the debth being the problem.

P.S.

Submerging fixed wingaircraft is easy - just drive them oft te coast very slowly

Cool. Gotto try it, I thought the depth was only some 5m or so.

Big ships have never been a problem, neither submarines, but getting them to actually work without screwing everything up is the problem.

Lately I thought of an easy way to make a submarine working in OFP. Just make a periscope that can drive on the surface... smile.gif

LOL!!!

I cant believe that there are people out there that uses OFP for pure "scientific" purposes...

I can picture U as U are conducting your experiments...LOL...rock on dude!

Oh, and please tell when U have measured the complete ocean. smile.gif

Yeah its old news tounge.gif  I first saw it in the Euro version when I got it in early july. found it when I was tring to hide the chopper from a friend of mine near the shore. I though I was in low water and shut off my engine and it sank wow.gif   Also in old Euro version you can land planes like choppers if you know how tounge.gif  tounge.gif

I forget which island I was playing on, (I think Everon) But I was driving in a tank from a City on one side of teh island to the other (to deliver a flag) and I remember seeing on part of the map a litte bit of water that would rise up, and disapear. It was only about the size around of like a UAZ but I thought it was funny the little tiny pond going up and disapearing.
