Missing Shadows

Recommended Posts

This is officially my first post in forums, so please excuse any lapse in procedure.

I've been noticing some really great vehicles coming out lately without shadows like the BAS BTR-T Tonal, and LWP Trucks pack. These are terrific in every sense, but a missing shadow seems so obvious.

What's the concensus on this?

The lapse in procedure will probably get the thread moved to A&M: Discussion thread.

It's probably due to the addon makers not making a shadow proxy... or OFP glitched up and doesn't display the shadow proxy like it's supposed to.

No, my shadows are turned on because everything else has shadows including all other vehicles. You'll also notice on the screenshots of the LWP Trucks release.. there aren't any shadows on the ground but the trucks tarps are shaded. ?

The shading on the tarps is part of the texture and not part of OFP's lighting, they'll have the same shading regardless of time of day. I prefer vehicles to have working shadows but IMO it's not a must!, except in combat photography.

Cap.

I've noticed quite a few shadows missing lately too.If the addon is beta its understandable that the LOD's haven't yet been trimmed down to produce a shadow .The addon needs a LOD with less than 300-600 faces depending on the addon to generate a shadow.

Often can be alot of work to trim a high detail addon down to those specs

I often noticed when testing the addons i'm working on that:

on tonahl most of the times the shadows are missing, but when trying it out on another island, shadows just working

fine. rock.gif

When I had a missing shadow-issue on my AH-64D (I think you were among the helpful chaps trying to help) I noticed there is nothing wrong in having 1000 faces on the LOD used for shadow. Just make sure you type LODNOSHADOW without a space at the end. LOL biggrin_o.gif

As far as I can tell, there is no limit to the amount of polys for the shadow-LOD.

DONT SAY THAT AT ALL! EvER!!! want to know why? because if you do i'll....i'll...i'll hit you with my mouse!!!! mad_o.gif

Shadows are always supposed to be there, esspecially professional addon makers like the ones who made the stuff mentioned above. THose aren't no noobies, they just GOT LAZY!!!!! mad_o.gifmad_o.gifmad_o.gif

Anyhow, shadows, they need to be there so that it looks authentic! Basically thats it....oh ya either that or they just put too many faces on those addons you talked about in the shadow lod...

You can remove a shadow through the config? rock.gif

i dont know..?

It just seems strange how the Original BTR-T has Shadows and the BAS version doesnt.

i was guessing it was the Addon config that had the settings for the shadow in it. ;)

Basicly, shadows are visible IF:

1) The lod (For an ex. 5.000) that DOESN'T HAVE lodnoshadow 1 properety enabled is under 300 faces. Can be a bit over, but not recommended.

2) All the other lods that are above (Meaning 0.000, 1.000, 1.500, 2.000, 3.000) have lodnoshadow 1 properety enabled. If the object has few lods under the 5.000 (Or any other lod that doesn't have the lodnoshadow 1) they shouldn't have the properety too.

3) Make sure the lod without lodnoshadow 1 does have under 300 faces.

I don't think you can tweak the shadow anyhow from the config.

I say again, 300 is not the limit.

I've had LOD7 with around 1050 faces and it generated the shadow perfectly.

As far as I know, there is no tweaking on the shadow, just the LODNOSHADOW-param in O2 for the LODs.

Pardon me for being a addon making n00b, but is it possible to fix the "no shadow" fault on addons yourself, or does it require the orignal files used to compile the addon?

Sure, but 1050 sounds a bit too large count for last lod..

Every addon should have last lod under the 300 faces. But I tested it once - made an addon that had over 300 faces (500) in shadowlod. Didn't work for me, but my friend saw the shadow. So somehow it depends on settings or something. But again, I recommend under 300 faces for playability reasons. Few units with 1000 faces shadow will demand much more from computer than same units with 280 faces shadow. And better lods = better performance.

You can depbo the addon but it requires MLOD version of the model. And even if it does have MLOD version, I wouldn't recommend depboing and stuffing it back. May cause some strange erros in MP and all authors may not like it..

Yes Major Fubar a end user can add a shadow lod themselves, as long as they can edit the pbo. Somebody was nice to fix some in my addons cause like a fair number of adon makers, just can't figure it out must be too simple. Others its a work in progress so adding the shadow lod causes a major headache cause you alter the model you have to redo the change in each and every lod and players view. Shadow lod is supposed to be the neast diffcult thing to do, but I don't know kinda get stupid trying to figure it out.

You open the model in O2 and add another lod and make a setting for the game to know its the lod for the shadows. If you have a lod below 300 the game is supposed to do it automaticly but kinda stopped back in v 1,96 for me.

you know, funny thing about this topic...didn't BIS have this problem and then they like had to release an update that made shadows come back?

Oh ya and there is a limit to how many "faces" that you can have on your Shadow Model or it won't work. Believe my I just tryed putting more than 600 on this soldier and weapon and it wouldn't work crazy_o.gif
