ran 0 Posted July 13, 2004 (I was talking about the Paris' parade ) Now in the smaller towns, you only have what's stationed around
Akira 0 Posted July 13, 2004 Viva! La Revolution! Wish it would be shown here... Vive la France! Now, back offtopic: parades. I think it is terrible and inappropriate to show off weapons to a crowd to impress them. Weapons are necessary but they are not something you should be proud of. They are a sad reflection of an imperfect world. Weapons are made for one purpose only: killing people. And I find it quite morbid to be proud of the killing capabilities of your country. Besides, from a soldier's point of view, parades suck. We had plenty of military parades for various military brass - and we always always collectively hated it. We don't have parades with weapons (unless it is an honor guard of some kind...and even then those weapons don't actually work). We don't roll tanks down Main St. USA. Nor missile launchers, or give M16s to little kids to "try out". At airshows everything is guarded pretty much (one airshow I went to in teh early 80s, the SR71 was there. It had a fence around it about 100 feet from the plane, and MPs walking around it at all times. As close as they let us get. Same when I went to one with the F117). Planes like F14s, F18s, AV8s, C5s, C141s, etc etc are parked on the tarmac and people can wander about and look at them. Tanks and APCs sometimes are also represented. Rifles may or may not be on static display, and I've never seen one taken out to let someone hold. In almost all cases, the crews of the vehicles are there, answering a largely ignorant public's questions. Pilots will let little kids sit in the cockpits. The main attraction though is of course the demonstations. It's hardly nationalistic or fascist. To even say its fascist and/or communistic is misinformed and ignorant. In this country there is a strong desire to see what ya buy. Same principle here. Also these shows aren't for the military to toot their own horn or show their massive power. These shows are for the public to be a little more aware and intelligent about the military, which is why on these weekends, bases normally closed to civilians, are completely opened (except for the BX's ). People come to see planes do loops and death defying fly-bys. Not to go "Wow. We can kill some serious shit." Air shows always start (least the ones I went to) with a model airplane show, flying demonstration. B17s are impressive, but for some reason a 6-foot long B17 some guy put together himself that can actually fly, is a lot more impressive. Also luckily, being here in Texas, The Confederate Air Force is real close, so they usually come with some of their prestine WW2 and WW1 planes.
ran 0 Posted July 13, 2004 well, most of the weapons we display are fully functionnal (that's if the potential customers in the presidential tribune wants to order something and get it shipped immediatly ) We surely won't have the Leclercs this year on the Champs because of the goddamned members of the green party who moaned because the tanks damaged the pavement ... Our boys kindly proposed to repair it all, but no ... goddamned hippies .... (nothing is sure about the leclercs but .... well) (the members of the green party apart of the Conseil de Paris not only moaned about the Leclerc messing a little bit the pavement but also campaigned for the withdrawal of Paris from the association of the Godmother Towns sponsorizing military units, hopefully, the Socialist Part and the UMP voted for the subevention and made the pot smokers shut their pie-hole)
Messiah 2 Posted July 13, 2004 I think that the military parades are a good thing... and Bastile day is such a great idea... why we have to refer to military parades as a commie thing, i don't know. why shoudln't we be proud of our men and women of the armed forces. Will be nice to see our Marines, Horse Guards and red arrows taking part on this great day. Its a shame we don't parade our challengers, warriors etc through london everynow and then... all we get his horses and the welsh guards parading... funerals, state occasions, coronations... be fun to have a procession of weaponry and troops... igor drukov 0 Posted July 14, 2004 Anybody watched the parade ? (I didn't) I haven't seen it but I was woken up today by Pumas and other choppers (small ones... didn't look like Gazelles though, but I'm no expert) flying past my window at low speed (I live in Boulogne, for those who know Paris). Quite an impressive sight, really.
bn880 5 Posted July 14, 2004 Viva! La Revolution!Wish it would be shown here... Odd, it's shown here every year it seems. I noticed Chirac discussing with the Military representatives etc. again, 1st one:"Don't worry about the repairs to the road, bah" (the usual) 3rd one down: "The fighter flyby was perfection"
Messiah 2 Posted July 15, 2004 some pics from the parade, courtesy of the BBC one of the funny things i read was that the main procession was led by the british (hehehe) but best of all, the horse guards' lead horse was named 'Agincourt' - LMAO, thats 2 fingers up at the french for u (no offence of course ran)
hellfish6 7 Posted July 15, 2004 Well... the British were invited to lead the parade. I don't see how that could be interpreted as an insult to the French.

You (as in You : goddamned roastbeeves)were just here as guests, present only by our will, which means we could have gently taken back the Horse Guards and the Grenabiers to the french Chunnel enterance and could have also grounded all the of red arrows planes due to participate to the parade. Now, be sure that if ever some of our tanks were to parade in your towns or participate in cross training on your land, be sure "Dunkirk" will be appart of the gear and vehicles shipping. (yes, we have a few unammed Leclercs awaiting for a name ... their crews can be inventive at time ...)
