French National Day 14/07/2003

Recommended Posts

It is not bad militant tradition, it's diplomacy biggrin_o.gif

it's business (well, it was when we had guests such as third world countries or china, the day always ended with the signature of defense on indsutrial contracts):

"here you can see our new type of hats, very practical by cold weathers"

"oh, there you have the AMX10P, we've been able to hide the rust with a new kind of paint, interested in a few barrels of it ?"

LOL - swedish national day  tounge_o.gif  Don't make me laugh as it's hardly mentioned in their calendar. The poor swedish bastards have even sent various official committies to our lovely nation to see how it's done - It's true!

Theres no better way of celebrating your national day than calling it indepedence day from your former colonial oppressors and watch unknown soldier. tounge_o.gif

Hehe.........but you see - unlike the swedes we get a bad taste in our mouth whenever someone mention the word "union" . So we still like to think of ourselves as independent - and european but without the "union" wink_o.gif

Hi, slightly off topic but here goes:

During world war 2, Napoleonic war, Hundred days war and the Crimean war, Polish units fought for France, are there still exclusively Polish units/companies/brigades in the French army?

I've searched but, of course, all the information is in French and of little use to me.

Nah, we don't have any Polish Tradition units.

Denoir you crack me up. Where are these facsisct yank military parades? The only parades in the US are the thanksgiving, christmas and gay pride parades.

Seriously though, where are these parades... I'd like to see them. The only time I've ever seen the military in a parade was on the news when the first Gulf War ended.

Also during the summer Air Show season. It's always good to let the people see what their money is buying...

Yeah, but I usually only see grizzled Vietnam, Korea, and WWII veterans marching along. I have yet to see a single tank sad_o.gif . On the flip side, I live near Westover AFB so I can go to some mighty big airshows biggrin_o.gif .

Quote[/b] ]I think 3rd Reich parades or Soviet parades/airshows/whatever when I see French or American parades as well.

Have some fun! We spend an enormous load of dough on military equipment, so can't we occasionally parade around a few pieces of equipment without being called Commies or Fascists? And we never go so far as to parade along with tactical nuke launchers tounge_o.gif .

We have our military parades. We also have airshows for the airforce.

I don't see what is wrong with having a military parade. We just don't have any set date for one.

Honestly, people are not as nationalistic here as they should be. But we still have military parades. You just have to find them since they are not done on any national date. They just happen.

Ah, yes, the French national day. Celebrations all around the world for France not being a super-power. You Frogs are even worse than the Yanks when it comes to military parades, flag waving etc... La Gloire, eh?  wink_o.gif

We don't really have massive military parades in the U.S. Dating back to the revolution it is taboo to have large amounts of soldiers massed in a U.S. city. It's a domestic occupation thing.

Belgium has a parade too, of course with less shiny equipment, and less equipment overal. tounge_o.gif

Two or three years ago the Leopards crushed parts of the streets the parade used, so last year there was no heavy armor. sad_o.gif

And I always remember the 14th of july, it's my birthday, I'll raise my glass for the french as well I guess. smile_o.gif

I guess Military parades have another function than those mentioned here already.

It gives the military publicity , good publicity.

In germany military is not that present in public.

Most of the germans have no real idea about the job BW does abroad, their missions, their equipment, their uniforms, etc.

A parade a year wouldn´t hurt. It would bring the BW closer to public and would be an honor for all our troops serving for the UN , the NATO abroad.

It wouldn´t hurt to honor those troops from time to time as their work goes nearly unnoticed these days.

Vive la France! smile_o.gif

Now, back offtopic: parades. I think it is terrible and inappropriate to show off weapons to a crowd to impress them. Weapons are necessary but they are not something you should be proud of. They are a sad reflection of an imperfect world.

Weapons are made for one purpose only: killing people. And I find it quite morbid to be proud of the killing capabilities of your country.

Besides, from a soldier's point of view, parades suck. We had plenty of military parades for various military brass - and we always always collectively hated it.

we don't only show off weapons, all the military and paramilitary forces are represented :

Army

Legion

Air Force

Navy

Gendarmerie

Police

Firemen

It is some kind of achievement in the carrier of these men, and it's also the occasion for the french people to celebrate their armed forces as it's an awesome PR tool and some kind of morale booster.

The only thing which sucks is the training preceeding the "big day out" on a landing strip during long long hours (especially if the summer sun is here), but in the end it's allways great to walk down the avenue with comrades in arms.
